Nearby city on ‘Top 10 US travel destinations for 2012’ list
It might be time to give Cincinnati another look.
The city out ranks Culebra, Puerto Rico, Chicago and five other areas on Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 US travel destinations for 2012” list.
Editors from the travel guide’s United States office describe “what’s new, interesting, and in some cases likely to be overlooked by travelers both domestic and international” for each of its picks on its website.
Here is what Lonely Planet said about the Queen City:
“Seen Cincy lately? The pretty city on the Ohio River - off the main cross-country interstates - gets bypassed by many road trippers, but it’s quietly transformed itself in the last decade into a worthy weekend getaway. Life centers around the river - much which can be seen by foot: river walkways are best on the Kentucky side, reached via a couple bridges including John Roebling’s Suspension Bridge (a prequel to his famous Brooklyn Bridge). Narrow, twisting (and steep) brick roads of the Mt Adams district lead past 19th-century Victorian townhouses and the free Cincinnati Art Museum, while the once-dangerous, emerging Over-the-Rhine, just north of downtown, is home to the Findlay Market and a sprawling collection of historic Italianate architecture. Best, though, is the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, open since 2004, on the banks of the river where many slaves escaped to freedom in the 19th century.”
US Virgin Islands tops the list followed by Hudson River Valley, New York. Cincinnati is third place.
The other destinations in order are: Four Corners Region, Southwest USA; Culebra, Puerto Rico;. Culebra, Puerto Rico; Boulder, Colorado; Hawai’i: The Big Island; Chicago and Yellowstone National Park.
What do you think? Where is your favorite travel destination?

I can’t believe Union Terminal didn’t get a mention. That place is fantastic beyond words. Can’t wait for the return of the streetcars too.

Tourism is great, but Cincinnati (and Ohio) needs jobs. And without manufacturing, Ohio will not increase its employment rate. The same can be seen in Europe which is a great tourist destination, but is in fiscal crisis. Why is the Freedom Center (I like “Underground Railroad Museum” better) is in financial straits?

@dodge09 The streetcar is fully funded and is being constructed by the city, which is DEFEINITELY not broke. Hamilton County, however, is broke because of the stadium deal taxpayers naiively approved in the 1990s. Cincinnati (the city) has a budget surplus this year thanks to all the positive momentum in downtown this past decade.
