Phillips’ secret: Run the 400

Northeastern High School track and field coach Dan Phillips has made big strides with the Jets program since he took over two years ago.

His philosophy on the track is a simple one.

“You make all your sprinters 400 runners,” Phillips said. “Once you do that, they can do anything. It make the whole track team stronger when you’ve got 8-9 kids who can run the 400.”

The Jets have been strong over the last few seasons, gaining steam both with numbers and meet victories. The boys are the two-time defending OHC champions, and the girls have won two invitationals this season.

“We’re trying to get that mentality there that it takes hard work,” Phillips said. “You can’t just go from meet to meet and through the week and hope you’re going to be the best.”

The goal is to have his athletes expect to run at both the regional and state meets each and every year.

“Our goal is when you say Northeastern, what comes to mind?” Phillips said. “We want it to be track. It takes a lot from the coaching to the athletes and the parents and the school.”
