Kenton Ridge High School has chosen Sarah Ivory to guide the softball team.

Ivory replaces Ed Foulk, who retired after 23 years and five trips to the state softball tournament. Ivory is a Kenton Ridge graduate and was an assistant under Foulk. She was also the head coach at North for one season.

“She’s been involved in the program both as a coach and a player, and she’s familiar with the kids and the community. She does a nice job working with the kids,” Kenton Ridge athletic director Kris Spriggs said.

The sports world was shocked today by the murder of Ed Thomas, the longtime high school football coach at Aplington-Parkersburg in Iowa.

Thomas made headlines last season when the football field at the school was rebuilt to help restore pride in the community of Parkersburg after it was hit by a tornado in 2008 that killed six people and destroyed the high school. The team was featured on both NBC’s Sunday Night Football and Showtime’s Inside the NFL. The school is also the alma mater of four NFL players.

Here’s a great video from the Falcons return to the field last fall from the Des Moines Register:

From the Associated Press:

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa — An umpire has emptied the stands at a high school baseball game, ejecting the entire crowd of more than 100 fans for being unruly.

Umpire Don Briggs said he had no problem with any of the student athletes during Thursday’s game between Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington.

He said he had to take action because fans were being unruly, yelling and arguing. However, West Burlington Superintendent James Sleister said he didn’t see any unusual behavior and said he thought the umpire overreacted.

The game resumed after a 40-minute delay. West Burlington won 12-11.

In May, I wrote a story about the Krista Ronai, the wife of former Catholic Central basketball player Jason Ronai, and her battle with brain cancer. I was amazed by the number of responses to that story, but not surprised by the outpouring of support directed the Ronais’ way. After all, their Web site chronicling the fight against cancer had already demonstrated that.

I thought I should update readers on the news that Krista is scheduled to undergo brain surgery today, June 12. You can find out more by visiting their journal at CaringBridge.org. Click here.

Austin Steward will take over the as Cedarville High School’s head football coach.

Steward has been an assistant for five seasons at Cedarville as the Indians’ defensive coordinator.

Steward replaces Jim Villinger, who came out of retirement in 2008 to lead the Indians for one season until a permanent replacement could be found.

Cedarville’s football program has struggled in recent seasons and went 2-8 in 2008.

6:15: All the Springfield-area athletes are finished here at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus.

West Liberty-Salem’s Nate Bratka finished sixth in the D-III discus with a toss of 160 feet, 4 inches. He won the event last season with a toss of 172-10.

The top-4 individuals in each semifinal and the top-4 times in each relay semifinals advance to Saturday’s state finals.

Springfield’s Alex Gaskins finished fourth in 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 14.63. Teammate James Moore, a regional champ in the 100 meters, finished seventh in his heat in 11.10.

4:15: Urbana’s Josh Colbert ran a personal-best time of 10.94 in the D-II 100 meters, finishing second in his heat. He’s got the seventh-fastest time heading into tomorrow’s finals, but just two-tenths of a second seperate the eight competitors.

West Liberty-Salem’s Hannah Ropp got on top the podium, finishing seventh in the D-II Pole Vault after clearing 10-4.

Shawnee’s Brandon Cook was eighth in his heat in the D-II 110 hurdles in 15.19 with the 13th best time overall.

The Northwestern boys 400 relay team of George McGill, Jake Casto, Tony Carson and Justin Burnett barely missed out on the state finals, finishing 10th overall in D-II in 43.53. The eighth-best time of 43.39 belonged to Medina Buckeye.

The Northeastern boys 800 relay team of Chad Phillips, Ethan Deselem, Aaron Hartzell and Caleb Raines were 14th (1:32.13).

The Urbana girls 800 relay team of Katie Rice, Katie Finney, Lillia Steffenson and Katie Raterman were 15th (1:49.36).

Graham’s Alex Taylor was eighth in her heat in 48.91, but had the 13th best time overall.

1:30 p.m.:Mechanicsburg is off to an impressive showing at the Division III state track and field meet.

Mechanicsburg’s Keith Hurst qualified to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth in a time of 15.20. He’ll compete in the long jump this afternoon.

“I think I had a good start out of the blocks, but I hit the first hurdle hard,” Hurst said. “It slowed me way down, but I caught back up.”

He used a nice kick at the end of the race to catch fifth place Ben Fortkamp of Marion Local (15.35).

“I had to catch him to move on, and luckily I had something left,” Hurst said.

The Indians 400 relay team of Alex Peoples, Mason Poland, Nick Smith and Joe Webb finished second in their heat in a 43.75.

“It’s just a great feeling,” Smith said. “We worked so hard during the season and hard work pays off.”
The Indians ran in a Lane 8, but were still able to qualifiy.

“It’s a different feeling, but you have to remember: ‘Don’t let anybody pass you’,” Smith said.

Two years ago, Smith was the anchor on the Indians 400 relay squad that finished 11th overall. He’s more than ready to go after missing out on the finals as a freshman.

“We know what we’ve got to do and we’re going to do it,” Smith said.

Smith had some of the top times in both the 100 and 200 earlier this season, but missed some time with a right hamstring injury. But he’s still happy he’s got enough in the tank to run on the Indians’ relay squad.

“It’s extremely frustrating because I see the times and I know I could beat that,” Smith said. “It’s been a bunch of prayer. The Lord will take care of it for me.”

Webb was also excited to keep racing tomorrow with his teammates.

“It’s amazing,” Webb said. “There were four-tenths of a second that separated us from 4th to 9th so we knew we could get up there. We knew we had to run as hard as we could and we did.”

Webb then turned around and won his heat in the 400 in 49.96 - also from Lane 8.

“My main thing was to stay out ahead of everybody after the last turn and kick and see what I had left,” Webb said. “I guess I just brought my A-game and showed what I can do.”

He’ll have the second-fastest time heading into tomorrow’s final behind the other heat winner, Silas Jolliff of Cardington-Lincoln (49.55).

“It was awesome to win it,” Webb said, “but I’ve got to come back tomorrow and win it. We’ll rest up, elevate the legs and get ready for tomorrow.”

Ram tough: Greeneview’s Sam LeMaster finished eighth in the Division II shot put, but left the podium feeling as if he had a bigger throw left inside.

“I wish I was a little higher, but eighth-place isn’t bad at all,” LeMaster said.

He fouled several times in his flight before reaching 53 feet on his third throw. He nailed a toss of 53 feet, 7.5 inches to grab eighth place. Urbana’s Will Barr was ninth with a 52-2.25.

“I’m pretty happy with the day,” It’s really like the culmination of my high school career. I’m All-Ohio now so I’m really glad about that.”

LeMaster will throw at Cedarville University next fall.

“I feel like it sets me up pretty well for college,” LeMaster said. “I won’t be out of my depth (when I get there). It’s a pretty good day.”

Other finishers:The West Liberty-Salem1,600 meter relay team of Jake Anderson, Brice Baumgardner, Lance Kitchen and Eric Zirkle were seventh in their heat in D-III in 3:30.33.

Kitchen placed fifth in his heat in the D-III 300 hurdles in 40.05. He was barely edged out of a spot in the finals by Cory-Rawson’s Lucas Horstman (39.77). Of the 16 semifinal competitors, Kitchen finished with the ninth best time.

Graham’s Chelsie Stanley tied for 11th in the D-II high jump clearing 5-0. The Falcons’ Emily Cook was 14th in the D-II girls discus with a toss of 110-10.

After throwing 13 innings and 201 pitches, Warroad pitcher Lars Anderson had enough Saturday night.

With the Warriors’ Class 2A, Section 8 baseball playoff game against Thief River Falls tied 3-3 and a runner on second, Anderson slammed the book shut with one swing, improbably ending the most memorable game of his career with a walk-off home run.

“I thought I had to get a hit at least,” Anderson said. “I didn’t want the game to go on anymore. We had to do it right there.”
