Local ice cream shop closes

Marble Slab Creamery Huber5.JPG
The former Marble Slab Creamery in Huber Heights

Earlier this week, when we wrote about the abrupt closing of the Ruby Tuesday in Huber Heights, I received an email from a reader who wrote, “Our favorite ice cream place, the Marble Slab Creamery, closed without a notice here in Huber Heights as well. It was a favorite spot here with many of us.”

I drove up to the ice cream shop at 7805 Waynetowne Blvd., just off Ohio 202 and Interstate 70, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and coincidentally, got there just a couple of hours after the auction of all of the ice cream shop’s contents. An auctioneer was still there, and although he didn’t know exactly when the shop closed, he noted that the auction “went very well.”

I wrote about Marble Slab Creamery’s opening back in May 2007. The franchise owner at that time was Scott Stewart, and he was pleased to be affiliated with the Houston-based chain that operated 539 locations in 35 states. I wasn’t able to reach Stewart this week.

The closing leaves only two Marble Slab Creamery shops in Ohio: in Dublin and Newark.

Yes, Logan that is true Cold Stone makes there ice cream in the store, but they have a lot more preservatives. Marble Slab got weekly shipments straight from the dairy to supply there milk. This ice cream was the closest you will ever find to homemade. They are owned by the same company as Maggie Moo’s, so the product is real close to that. You will not find a better quality ice cream! Too bad this horrible economy sucked up the best ice cream place around. I guess now Cold Stone will get some of there customers back. The ice cream was better, and prices were cheaper than Cold Stone’s!!! Sad Loss for the true ice cream lovers of the world!!!

Marble Slab Creamery had the best ice cream in town and the freshest too. To bad more people did not know about it. Scott and Shannon put their heart and soul in that store and not enough people appreciated it.

Logan, for your information gelato is not the same as ice cream, and far better than Cold Stone (cannot even be compared to). Gelato is made with whole milk instead of cream, and it is dense meaning it has 22% overrun (less air wiped into it, premium ice cream can have 85%). Check Wikipedia… Ok, the only decent true ice cream place in Dayton would be Graters (Cold Stone and Maggie Moose do suck, unless you prefer to taste fat and the only way to make it better you absolutely need to mix something into it). But on any day I will take gelato over ice cream. Fortunately Dayton has Dolcessa, finally something from the coasts made it here…

I am not surprised at the closing. Dollar General was there and closed. A place that taught ballroom dancing and closed. and closed. and closed. This shopping center is off the main drag and the only business there that seems to barely make it is Subway. Barely. Location. Location. Location.

Mark, On the bright side I noticed a Larosas Pizza open up in Huber. It is on Troy just south of Taylorsville I would also be suprised if one of the two Bob Evans in Huber does not close

I noticed the ad for the auction in Sunday’s paper while I was using that section for catching the potato peels. Quite a few other auctions were listed there as well….

The Quizno’s up and closed without notice here too! I’m sad to see Marble Slab (and the others) go. I did not eat there often (too expensive) but it was good.

I used to work at Cold Stone, and we did make our ice cream fresh in the store every day as well lol. And “gelato” is really the Italian word for ice cream, so while they may provide more Italian-esque flavors, it is kind of awkward to say for certain that “gelato is way better than ice cream.” Gelato is good, but in Italy all I could ever think about was Graeter’s. YUMMMMMM!!!

We will miss Scott and Slabby!! Scott supported many area youth programs by donating coupons and allowing parents to work fundraisers in his store. What a shame we now have to travel out of Huber to get ice cream with our own mix-ins now.

This closing is unfortunate. Their ice cream was far superior to Cold Stone because it was made fresh in the store, not shipped in from who knows where. Sad to see it go.

I thought they had an unfortunate name. Might has well have read “Marble Slab Crematory.”

Never went there for ice cream. Something about the name “Marble Slab” just seemed kind of creepy.
