Dominic’s restaurant rises from the ashes
WEST CARROLLTON — A big piece of Dominic’s restaurant is about to be reborn.
Christie Mantia, the granddaughter of Dominic’s founder Dominic Mantia, is partnering with Reece Powers, the nephew of the founder and owner of Duke’s Golden Ox, to open an as-yet-unnamed restaurant at 630 E. Dixie Drive in a building that housed Margarita Village Mexican restaurant.
The new restaurant’s menu will feature “the original recipes” from Dominic’s, Christie Mantia said. Harry Lee, the chef who cooked those dishes at Dominic’s for 25 years between 1980 and 2005, has been hired to help bring the recipes back to life.
Dominic’s, which was located at 1066 S. Main St. in Dayton, closed in July 2007 and was later demolished. The restaurant has been part of the Dayton dining scene for more than 50 years. It was founded by Dominic Mantia and his wife Sue in 1957, using homemade Italian recipes, including a signature garlic-laced house salad dressing. It became a pregame and postgame gathering spot for University of Dayton sports fans for decades.
Christie Mantia’s step-mother, Anne Mantia, who operated the restaurant after her husband’s death, last year brought back bottled Dominic’s house Italian salad dressing, and later launched Anna Mantia Marinara Sauce, both of which are available on several local grocer’s shelves.
Anne Mantia said today, March 18, that she has no connection to the new restaurant, but has not ruled out opening a successor to Dominic’s herself.
“I’d love to have a Dominic’s-style restaurant in Dayton,” Anne Mantia said. “I’ve been talking to people for a long time and waiting to see what happens with the economy. If the right opportunity comes along, I’d like to do it.”
Regarding the new restaurant venture, Anne Mantia said, “I’m happy that some Dominic’s-style recipes will be available to the public.”
Christie Mantia said she was taught the original recipes by her grandmother, Sue Mantia, and was searching for the right opportunity to open a restaurant when she was approached by Reece Powers, nephew of the founder and owner of Duke’s Golden Ox, a restaurant that operated near Dominic’s and which also has been closed and demolished.
“It’s the thing I know and love. It’s in my blood,” Christie Mantia said.
Mantia said she would serve as general manager, while Powers will be the owner. Powers, who owns a printing business, cooked at Duke’s Golden Ox briefly, she said. Duke’s Golden Ox, founded by Duke Morris, operated on South Main Street across from the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. It closed in 2004 after 34 years in business.
The new West Carrollton restaurant is accepting applications this week and will begin interviews next week, with an eye toward opening in about a month, Mantia said.

Anne was the worst thing that EVER happend to Dick and his fAMILY’S Restaurant!! All she wanted was the prestige of saying she was his wife, and spending his money. I am so happy for Christie and Harry and Reese. If they run this restaurant the way their Families ran the originals….success is their’s for the taking…..Just a short hello to Jesse S. from HSM

To get more of the original taste of the Dominic’s dressing… put on freshly washed lettuce so that there is still some moisture, toss, and let sit to room temperature (the label says). I have found the longer it sits to get to that familiar wilted stage, the better. (I add a little salt to help the wilting) You’ll see the same look of thin dressing in the bottom of your bowl when done this way. Still not perfect, but really close.

We are very hopeful for both Christie and Reese. Our family have celebrated Carroll HS and Wright State graduations, cristenings, birthdays and many other events at Dominics. Further I proposed to my wife at Dominics. Your sauce and salad dressing are unequaled anywhere (I am from NY City)since Nana Antinarelli passed. Good luck and God speed. We will see you when you open.

The salad dressing sold in the stores tastes terrible, not anything like the garlic dressing that was served in Dominics. Dominics was very good for years then slowly declined in food taste and service. The restaurant was very outdated and a few times they ran out of simple things like their home made bread and lettuce and never made an attempt to get more just told us they were out of food. I wish the new business much success.

Yea!!! I’m so excited. My husband loves Dominics lasagna and I loved the salad dressing. We’re both glad they are reopening. Not sure about the location, but we’ll make it work. We had heard (obviously just a rumor) that they might reopen in the Villa Da Giovannis closed restaurant in Fairborn close to 675. That’s a beautiful building and good location (close but not too close to the Fairfield Commons). Maybe if we keep our fingers crossed they will open a second one for all the “northeast Dayton” people like us!! :)

Ok, not the City, per se, but expansion. Of I-75 and also U-D and MVH. Ultimately the expansion of these are not bad things, but the fallout has a negative impact on smaall businesses. Michael’s Chili Bowl, for instance. If a place is good, people will get there. This new location is only as bad as your own location if you think it’s a bad location. I will go, that’s fr sure.

Why have the some of the last commentors started bad mouthing both Dayton and Dominics. Both are still alive (one still in our hearts). How many times have we made the statement: I wish Dominics was still there. It was very convenient to most people for most of the years it was open. The people who do the bitching are propably the ones who vacated downtown and have never come back. There are many things to do downtown today. I wish the new Dominics would be easilier to get to, but we will certainly be there. Just keep everything fresh, not bottled.

Dominic’s wasn’t forced out of the city- it was run into the ground by Dick Mantia’s former wife! As she so unwisely faux painted anything that didn’t move instead of making necessary repairs and cut food quality to help line her pockets, it was Annie- NOT Christie- that was the ultimate demise for the much loved Dominic’s. The team of Christie Mantia, Harry Lee, and Reece Powers will guarantee that the new Dominic’s will be around for a very long time and continue to be a Dayton tradition and legacy- even if it is in West Carrollton!

The City of Dayton and downtown forced all these places out, Scott. UD and MVH gobbled up all that land, while the explansion of Main St forced other places out. It was those businesses who were condemned by Dayton, not the businesses abandoning downtown.

POPPAWU this is for you: KITTY LITTER CAKE 1 spice or German chocolate cake mix 1 white cake mix 1 large pkg vanilla instant pudding mix 1 pkg vanilla sandwich cookies Green food coloring 12 small Tootsie Rolls New, cleaned litter box New, cleaned litter scooper [edit] StepsPrepare the cake mix according to the directions on the box. Use any size pan. Allow the cake to cool to room temperature. Prepare the pudding mix and put it in the refrigerator for now. Crumble the white sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor (scrape often to get every little piece) or by hand. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. Measure 1/4 cup of cookie crumbs and add a few drops of green food coloring to it. Mix with a fork or shake everything in a jar. Crumble the room temperature cake into a large bowl. Toss it gently with half of the remaining white cookie crumbs and enough chilled pudding to moisten (not soak) the crumbs. Put the cookie crumbs and pudding mixture into a brand new, clean litter box. Heat three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and until they’re soft and pliable. Pinch the ends so they are no longer blunt—you want them to look convincingly like what cats put in the litter box, right? Repeat this process with as many Tootsie rolls as you’d like to add, microwaving them in batches of three. Bury the shaped Tootsie rolls in mixture and sprinkle them with the other half of the cookie crumbs. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top. This will mimic real litter, where many of the grains are often blue or green. Shape 3 more Tootsie rolls and scrape them on top of the cake. One can hang over the side of the litter box. Sprinkle them lightly with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a brand new, cleaned litter scooper for that extra touch!

Oh and as for Jon’s comments about the police writing tickets. Its not the police department that loves to write tickets. Its the city manager and council who loves for the police department to write tickets. If the police dont write enough tickets then the chief gets criticism from the revenue hungry council, and it trickles down to the officers.

I work in West Carrollton and I have seen many restaurants open at this location only to fail a few months later. I wish Christie Mantia only the best on her venture. Maybe this is what we need here and the restaurant will be successful. Its about time West Carrollton gets a restaurant thats not fast food or Mexican. I remember eating at Dominics. They had great food so i’ll be eating here too.

Every year on our that special day we went back there and Duke always remembered us. duke was a very close friend and I have missed going to his place. My family knew Duke and the wifes knew Dom’s because they are Italian. Wifes family saw Dom’s was the best in town overall.

The return of Dominic’s to the area is exciting news, but for those looking for the authentic garlic dressing it’s not in the grocery stores. I’d have to agree with Julie earlier in the comments. What you find in the grocery stores is not even remotely related in taste to that awesome garlic dressing at the restaurant. One can be hopeful that we’ll be tasting the real thing again shortly!

This will be on my list of first stops when I am in town. Do they ship!!!

When I was growing up (a LONG time ago) my parents always took me to Dominics on my birthday. It was a fantastic treat that I always looked forward to. I decided to take my own daughters there for their birthdays several years ago and was very disappointed. The quality had gone waaaaaaay down and everything tasted like it was out of a box or a bag. Nothing tasted freshly made and was not reminiscent of the Dominics of old times. I wish the new owners well, and will try the restaurant when it opens in hopes that they will be putting forth the effort to produce a quality product.

Dukes had the best food because Mr. Morris cared about quality. He would watch all the food that came from the kitchen. My then boyfriend was a friend of the owner and we would sit at the bar to eat our dinner. The best steaks and fries in town. The dressing is easy to make from both Dukes and Dominics but the ingredients need to be fresh thats why bottled is not as good.

The location is actually good. The original restaurant there was Redrock and they did well there for years. It went bad in it’s last year or so, and there hasn’t been a quality place there since. That’s why they’ve failed not the location. The I-75 exit is suppose to be redone in the next couple years, which will make WC even more accessible. Dominics will do well there. It’s just outside of Dayton and right off the interstate. The biggest problem is to get the high falutting people from other places to bite the bullet and come in to WC and admitt that the city has some good things to offer.

The original Dominics was the best. In its last years the food quality fell to the point it was just bad, even the salad dressing was of poor quality. I hope she does her ancesters justice with the recipes. I for one will give it a try and hope for the best. As for the location, not the best. To far off the beaten path with so many others failing at that same location. I wish them well as we need another good Italian restaurant. Disalvos is very good but pricey. Palermos does a good job as well, just not Dominics.

Please let’s try to keep this one going. My wife and I have enjoyed every restaurant at that location but for some reason none of them seem to make it. I am hopeful that this one will. Please spread the word so we can keep this one going. It is a good location where one can avoid the mall traffic, but I guess that seems to be the downfall of this location - not enough traffic.

I’ll be back & try it. After Sonny’s death, the quality & cleanliness dropped. I hate sticky restroom floors & dirty silverware

Nice to hear it’s coming back, but that is a very poor location. Multiple restraunts have failed at that spot. I wish them well.

To answer the question about the dressing, YES it is sold at Dorothy Lane Markets in the salad dressing aisle! I am happy to hear this news, and look forward to being able to have a taste of Dominic’s again.

I hope they have good luck with this venture. That location has seen a lot of restaurants come and go in a short amount of time.

We’ll definitely have to venture over there for some of their food. I used to sweat garlic out of my pores for days after eating their salads. Mmmmmm…garlic. I had no idea that they sold their salad dressing at some grocery stores…anyone have a list of those grocery stores?
