Kettering restaurant opens with scaled-back hours
The new Sonic restaurant that we told you about last month in an entry entitled Kettering latest to feel the Sonic boom has indeed opened, although with one significant change: It is not open 24 hours as restaurant officials suggested a month ago it would be.
“We did scale back the hours,” Chris Heitz, district manager for Houchens Industries, said in an email. Bowling Green, KY-based Houchens is the franchisee that is more than halfway toward its goal of putting up 29 Sonic Drive-In restaurants in the Dayton area. Next up is Sidney, followed by Huber Heights (7888 Brandt Pike).
The new Kettering Sonic, located at 2890 Wilmington Pike, just north of East Dorothy Lane at the site of a former White Castle restaurant, is open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and until midnight the rest of the week, Heitz said. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with city officials is scheduled for May 20, he said.
The email didn’t explain the late change of heart from the initial promise of a 24/7 restaurant, but I’d have to think a bit of sanity prevailed. How much sales would the restaurant have in the middle of the night? And would you want to wait on the kinds of customers who would come careening in at 3 a.m. on a Friday and Saturday?
The Kettering Sonic’s phone number is (937) 938-9900.

Sal Monella, MILLIONS of people want to start the day with a bag of “unhealthy garbage”. And nyc is right, they’ll lose anybody who has to be at work by 6 to the McDonalds across the street. And as long as they don’t turn around and sue because of all their health problems, I don’t care what they eat.By nolagirl

Hmmm Sonics is missing out on the competition, Mickey D’s that is located across the street is open 24 hours, and they do great business! And seriously to the poster who posted about having snipers and guns, for crying out loud this is Kettering not the West side of Dayton.By Mark Fisher

Have been to Sonic twice. Once out of town & once in West Carrollton. It’s overpriced for what you get and the food isn’t that great. They also don’t offer free refills! Is there a fast food place on earth that does not offer refills? The staff in the West Carrollton one was very rude about this at my last visit. Won’t go bact. I’d rather spend $25 at just about any other sit-down restaurant and get better food & service.By Meatball

Hey Mark, just because you and I are too old to be out carousing at 3a.m. doesn’t mean those that are should go hungry. Are you too old to remember the munchies?By ELW

I stopped in for a quick beverage break on my shopping rounds Saturday. I had to wait but it was entertaining to watch the guy on skates and the music was interesting. With the crowd that was there I assume they are doing well. I’ll be back when I am able. Love that it was “Happy Hour” where the drinks are reduced between 2 & 4. I don’t think the 24 hour deal will be missed that much.By Sal Monella

Yeah, but how many people want to start the day with a bag of unhealthy garbage? It didn’t work for White Castle and their Hershey squirt burgers. Why would Sonic be any different. Overall — YUCK — just more fast garbage “food” so more people can be obese!By nyc

scaled back hours are fine but they are missing morning business by opening @ 6am. They need to open by 5:30 @ least
