Four local pizza restaurants close abruptly
This story was updated with comments from a CiCi’s Pizza Restaurants spokesman at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 28.
Sign greeting customers of the CiCi’s Pizza in Kettering Wednesday night
The four Dayton-area CiCi’s Pizza restaurants closed abruptly on Wednesday, May 27.
A sign on the door of the CiCi’s at 3050 S. Dixie Drive in Kettering told disappointed customers, “We are no longer open for business. Please try one of our Cincinnati or Springfield locations.” Calls to the other three local Cici’s — in Huber Heights, Beavercreek and the Sugarcreek Twp.-Centerville area — went unanswered Wednesday. Customers of the Kettering store who encountered the “closed” sign Wednesday night said the restaurant had been open the previous day.
Kyle Smith, vice president of operations for the Coppell, Texas-based CiCi’s restaurant chain, sent the following email Thursday afternoon, May 28:
“We understand the impact store closings have on employees in the Dayton community. Unfortunately, this is a result of the current economic crisis affecting consumers and restaurants in Dayton & across the country. The closed restaurants were franchised stores and the decision to close was not anticipated by CiCi’s Corporate. The employees will be personally contacted and will be hand-delivered their payroll check for all hours worked. CiCi’s will also be presenting other job opportunities at CiCi’s restaurants in nearby Columbus and Cincinnati. We are committed to the Dayton Market and are already actively looking for a way to resume operations as quickly as possible. We appreciate the many loyal guests who have supported CiCi’s and look forward to once again serving guests very soon.
Less then three months ago, the three CiCi’s Pizza restaurants in Butler County — in Hamilton, Fairfield and West Chester — closed. The restaurants were operated by a franchise owner.

CiCi’s was starting to tick me off anyways, this just tops things off for me. They had the best cinnamon rolls and garlic cheese bread, then they started changing menu items the garlic cheese bread vanished. They changed their pricing around. They began to really suck! I hope they come back though, but when they do I hope they would improve the crust on their pizza and bring back the garlic cheese bread!By job

$5 for all the food!!! Who cares if it was $1 if it is crap. Great place to take kids? No wonder everybody here is fat with health problems and childhood obesity is growing like crazy. Come on Midwest, choose quality over quantity and your kids deserve better food than all you can eat crap for $5. You can spend $5 on something good and healthy than unlimited card board with crap on it.By lovin' da thug life

NYC: I know Frankie G. from the Main St. store and I work with the brother of the family who owns the store by Wright State. Maybe not 100% like what I used to get back on L.I., but it’s still great. All we need is a good Italian bakery. Cannolis…yum!!!By barney filth

To the Dayton Daily News, please just print the stories and don’t give space to most (of course not all) of these ingrates. Of course I mean that in a nice way but I would prefer to read the news and not give everyone a forum for their pitiful life. I meant lives since i am sure someone will be correcting me.By Kathleen

This is a sad situation and not one that people should be joking about. The closing of these pizza parlors added their former employees to the state’s unemployment roll. I no longer live in Ohio, but Dayton is my home town and I hate to see that it is slowly dwindling away to nothing while the citizens just watch or make jokes. Take control of your city, be proud to be a Daytonian. Keep your jobs there. My employer left 4 years ago and I was either forced to transfer or become another statistic, I still had small children and a decent job so I made out o.k. I see your fair city as just a town now, the people who need to be unemployed you keep “electing”. Stop, and take control of your city before it’s too late. What happened to G.M., Harrison Radiator, Frigidare, St. Elizabeth and even Value City could easily happen to McDonald’s, Wendy’s, White Castle, etc. People need their jobs. Laughing one minute, crying the next…. that could be you!By bummer

The upper management of CiCi’s Pizza is not awful. It is the midwest market that makes new concepts difficult to run at a profit. Even though the name on the front of the store is a well-known name, the restaurant may be locally owned. Don’t be so quick to assume that every big restaurant chain is run by its corporate management.By Larry

I think the upper management in this chain is just really awful. When I was in college and I lived in Athens, OH, we had a CiCi’s for a short period. Then, this EXACT thing happened. Just popped a sign on their door and were never heard from again. Employees found out they were out of a job from that same sign on the door. Terrible way to run a business!By william

We ate at Ci-Ci’s, ONCE. A family member from another state just bragged on it. It is definitely quantity over quality. They got us ONE time. Pizza wasn’t fit to toss in the dog’s bowl. Had to leave there and stop a Marion’s on the way home to get a pizza. Sorry for the folks out of work, but the food was NASTY.By BigJack

I was in NYC last week and had some good pizza, but not anything better than Dewey’s. I can see why you’d think Dayton pizza is terrible if you based it on places like Marions (worst pizza EVER!!) or Donato’s or something. As far as CiCi’s goes, it stinks for my kids because they liked that place a lot. The food was not bad for the money and they had some unique pizza’s. I did like the way I could have slices of Mexican, Buffalo, Spinach and Apple pizza’s all on one plate. It’s too bad they had to go, but it sounds like they had poor franchisors.By Joan

For $5 my boys ages 7 and 9 got to pick whatever style pizza they wanted. This place wasn’t for trendy Pizza shoppers nor were you going to find a table cloth or candle at the table. It was a cheap and easy way to cover dinner when families didn’t have enough time to make it and you didn’t want to do the Land of a Thousand Burgers. What’s lost is diversity NOT quality.By nyc

My heart goes out to all those who lost their jobs because of this. P GRIFFIN: Thats because its not a restaurant with table service moron. Its a buffet (translation: SELF-SERVE) At any rate, CiCi’s itself has been one of the best franchises for a few years running, even more so in the recent economy so I can only imagine this is ownership-related. My husband was a manager for Cici’s and went to work yesterday to be told he no longer had a job, no warning, just hey we closed sorry about your luck. It bothers me to get on here to see that in a time like this, knowing people with families like us, that people just want to complain about the fact they did not like the pizza. My husband worked his butt off for that company and this is how he gets repaid. Now we have no income and two children to care for. So maybe instead of bashing the food they served or how they greeted you when you came or left, think of the ones who lost their jobs with no notice and no big buy out to fall back on. Craig has the best comment so far. This is capitalism. Perhaps you guys should take an Economics class at Sinclair. If people don’t like the food, the company goes under. Plain and simple. The employees will find a job somewhere else and the marketplace will reach equilibrium again (as long as the government stays out of it).By theshawn

I think Carol’s point was that autistic children have routines…and if you break the routine, it can be very upsetting to them. So the autistic description is relevant to her point.By Kevin Lasley

Hi. My name is Kevin and I like pizza. I like pizza with pepperoni on it. But whenever I go to get some pepperoni pizza at Cici’s, they would be out. This makes me sad. Now I will be sad more because Cici’s has closed and I can no longer get pepperoni pizza from Cici’s.By Blown Away

carol, why can’t you jusat say your “child”? I don’t get why you have to refer to your child as your autistic child. I am sure if your child knew that, he would not take that lightly.By Carol Showers

I took my autistic child there every Friday, he loves it! I don’t know how we will explain this to him. It was the only place he ever asks for. Sorry to see the team in Huber go. We loved the staff.By Ange

Sure the pizza is pretty crummy, but how dare you make light of their misfortunes - 4 restauants’ employees lost their jobs. PT or FT, these people have lost income that might be hard to replace. Revel on in these people’s misery, clown!By CiCi's Lover

My kids loved CiCi’s. I’m not sure how I’m going to tell them their gone. We all know the pizza wasn’t very good, but you couldn’t beat the price or seeing those little smiles when we pulled up.By earl
