Dayton is ‘soup capital’ of the country, Campbell’s says

The Campbell’s soup company has declared the Dayton-Cincinnati region the “Chicken Noodle Soup Capital” of the U.S., and for good reason: We buy more Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup per capita than any other city in the country, according to a Campbell’s spokeswoman.

How many cans, you ask? Try more than 2.5 million over a one-year period, right here in southwest Ohio, the company spokeswoman said.

Here’s Campbell’s “Top 10” Chicken Noodle Soup markets — notice how well-represented Ohio is on this list:

  1. Cincinnati/Dayton

  2. Louisville, KY

  3. Roanoke, VA

  4. Knoxville

  5. Indianapolis, IN

  6. Columbus, OH

  7. Grand Rapids, MI

  8. Charlotte, NC

  9. Toledo

  10. Richmond/Norfolk

We asked Campbell’s why Ohioans seem to have such a voracious appetite for canned, condensed chicken noodle soup. Here’s what the company spokeswoman said:

“In terms of overall regional popularity, soup is most popular in the Great Lakes region of the Midwest, which includes Ohio. This is an area of the country where people enjoy soup as part of a meal (soup as soup) and use soup as an ingredient for cooking. Of course, the colder weather across this region helps to drive consumption.”
