blog: No college hoops town any better than Dayton

Folks here just love to watch college basketball.

In the 40 years the Arena has been open, basketball crowds have averaged 11,761 fans per game and UD has never been ranked worst than 35th in the nation in attendance. Usually it’s in the Top 25.

Then there are the NCAA Tournament games that UD Arena has hosted in 23 of the 40 years it’s been open. When the first and second rounds end here Sunday night, UD will have had 84 NCAA Tournament games played here. That’s more than any arena in the nation. And next year the women’s NCAA Tournament returns when UD hosts a regional.

Since when does how many fans you get in the stands dictate how good you are on the court? There are alot of A10 teams that don’t average 3000 fans; does that mean the A10 is a community college league? This article is congratulating Flyer fans for their support (and to a lesser degree basketball fans in the Dayton area). So why all the hate about Wright State? Wright State educates the majority of college educated citizens of Dayton, employs thousands. Just because their program is up-and-coming doesn’t mean UD fans have to be fearful. There is plenty of room in Dayton for both of them.

Funny how everyone trashes Wright State. “It’s a commuter school” - no one disputes that. “They can’t fill Nutter” - yeah, you’re right. Wright State is not drenched in tradition like UD… 50% of the grads leave town for jobs. But, why oh why are the mighty Flyers afraid of WSU!?! If it’s truly the strength of schedule argument, then that’s ridiculous. Since Chaney left Temple & Calipari left UMass, the Atlantic 10 has been considered a MID-MAJOR, just like the Horizon League. Why do you think they let UD join?? Give the fans the Gem City Jam. Stop hiding behind your weak excuses. And if you Flyers think WSU is the lesser of the 2 teams, you’re probablt right. But, that’s what you are to Xavier… and always will be.

“Give credit to where credit is due”??? Are you retarded? Credit for going to a basketball game? You get CREDIT for doing a good deed, not for sitting at a basketball game. Dayton is full of RETARDS.

Love OSU and Cinti., but have lived in Columbus, Cinti., and Dayton and pound for pound none compares to UD fans. OSU goes to the tourn. this year and was selling upper level tickets for like 5 bucks to draw folks-and the Columbus area has twice the population of Daytons. Whether you like them or not, give UD credit where it is due.

After reading such a great article by Tom….idiot morons still b***h about UD. This article was about UD fans supporting BB no matter who is playing in Dayton. Then the blowhards from Columbus chime in and show how damn stupid they can be. I just don’t get it. Whether Dayton wins 5 or 25 games in a season we will always be there for them. Jim…you too are an idiot. UC fans are not loyal at all. They only like winners. Those “Cincy” schools are not dedicated to there sports at all. Yea…put a winner on the field they show up…other than that you all suck. Can’t even compare to the Dayton support you see year in and out.

These comments shows just how big of jerks UD fans are after a great article showing how the city of Dayton love there basketball a bunch of Flyer fans have to badmouth Wright State. I wish i could root for UD Go WVU!!!!! There’s a reason Xavier wants to leave the A10

I feel sorry for Chris Wright. Where ever he goes fans ask his who he plays for. He says: “Dayton”. They ask: “Is that Division II or Division III”. If he transfers to OSU, the conversations will change for Chris. Fans will ask him “What team do you play for”. Chris will respond: “Ohio State”. Then the fans will ask: “Can I have your autograph”. It must be tough playing for a mid-major.

I am a long time UD fan, but I went to the Nutter Center two times this season. I’m not sure how many fans were at the game, but it was packed for Butler. I’m guessing there were 11,000 for the game.

hey, are they selling beer at UD during the tournament? Anyone go to the play-in game who knows this? Just curious …

It is amazing the some UD fans take every opportunity to rip Wright State. Taking shots at Wright State does not make UD look better. Aside from the comments of a few bitter UD fans that was a nice article.

The Dayton press could not write enough about “the Chief”. Seems as though the Chief did not like the taste of EAGLE tail feathers. The Dayton press and media would have done much better if they had focused on the Morehead State team. Morehead State is only a 3 hour drive from Dayton. There are many MSU alums and students from the Dayton area because you can go to a real University out of state for less money than our Wright State Community college !!! Go MSU EAGLES, get you some Cardinal feathers to build your nest !!! The EAGLES know how to play some real good “string music”……. “going up cripple-creek, going up a run. Alabama State once had a basketball team, now they have none.” Get with it Dayton press and media, Morehead State is where your nest is at !!!

Based on the population, Dayton is a great basketball town. And howabout the way they support the Dragons.

Dayton is a great basketball town, but the only reason that arena hit a new record last night was because of Morehead State alums and students! Levels 3 and 4 were made up almost entirely of MSU fans!

I grew up in Dayton in the 60’s and appreciate its basketball heritage. But after living in Indianapois for last 15 years, it can’t hold a candle to what happens in Indiana. Remember, we get the final 4 every 5 years for the next 20. Also a regional final every 5 years, along with the ladies. Nothing in Ohio can match.

Great stuff for the city and area. ESPN radio guys were praising Dayton all afternoon on Tuesday. An upset win in Minn. on Friday would enhance the image even more. Go Flyers!

if you believe WSU averaged 5500 I have a bridge to sell you. They are known to inflate the number to save face. Speaking of which…they had the most lame excuse to post season play…sure they would have been invited to a tournament…NOT, “we are beat up and have exams” sorry they begged out to save face…UC is way better than them they got no invite

OHIO STATE HAS PLAYED AT UD ARENA, AND THRASHED THE FLYERS BACK IN THE 1988-1989 SEASON. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. OSU WOULD TOTALLY RIP UD A NEW HARTSOCK IF THEY PLAYED. THERE WOULD BE NO HOME COURT ADVANTAGE BECAUSE OF ALL THE OSU FANS AROUND HERE. THERE’S MORE OSU FANS THAN WRIGHT STATE WRONG SCHOOL FANS.

Hey JJ, high schools do draw well. The funny thing is that there were 11,000 fans at UD Arena to see two teams nobody around here cares about. That crowd is bigger than WSU has ever drawn for one of their games, even Michigan State. Oh wait, the Nutter Center doesn’t even have that many seats. Anyone want to rip Dayton for refusing to play Wright State? The Raiders are not on the Flyers level. It’s like the Road Warriors wrestling the Mulkey Brothers.

hey joe - has osu and Louisville scheduled a game in dayton for next season??? you can’t be talking about the ncaa this weekend because osu is going to loss to a mid-major and we’ll get to see not only quality basketball with Siena and Louisville but also class programs and fans

Osu Joe is clueless. If there is a huge difference, tell Matta to play at UD Arena…they would find out what Pitt, Louisville, and Marquette have found out….difference is “perception”…reality hurts. They wont’s play UD to protect their perceived status.

The reason that UC only averaged 7500 fans per game was because Bob Huggins is no longer at the school. It does not matter that UC is a commuter school. If Huggs came back, UC would average 10k

My brother goes to UC and he told me that UC averaged 7500 fans per game. Miami averaged 3500. Being a commuter school is not that big of a deal, just ask DePaul.

The biggest commuter school in Ohio is UC. It affects their attendance pretty badly.

Thank you for putting WSU attendance in perspective. Dayton fans are loyal, and so are WSU fans. Being a commuter campus makes things difficult, but getting 5500-6000 a game is something about 240 other D-1 schools would love to have.

Wright State averaged 5500 a game which would rank 4th in the Atlantic 10. Considering that WSU is such a young school, that is not too shabby.

If you want to see major college basketball in the Dayton area, you should come out to see OSU play Louisville. There is a huge difference between A10 and Horizon League mid-major basketball and BCS basketball.

Dayton stands out because UD fans are so faithfull-they are awesome. I don’t think that makes the whole town get credit though when Wright State draws as poorly as it does-if the whole town was basketball nuts, WSU and the high schools would draw better.
