Wine doggie-bag law takes effect today

Well, Uncorked readers had plenty to say back in March about this topic when it was first proposed — the idea that diners should be able to take home their leftover wines from restaurants.

Then in June, we celebrated when the proposal was (gasp!) approved by state legislators.

Then in August we fermented the idea of heading out to eat on the day the law took effect, to first and foremost have fun, and secondly to test-drive, if you will, the new law and see how restaurants are responding to it. We even passed along information to restaurant owners about how they might comply with the new law.

Tonight (9-21-06) it all comes together. This is the first day the law takes effect, and it’s time to dress to the nines and pop the cork. I’m headed out tonight. Whether it’s tonight or Friday or Saturday, if you dine out and order a bottle of wine, let us know how the experience went — heck, you don’t have to limit your comments to the wine-to-go part of your evening, tell us how the whole experience was.

Have fun, enjoy and cheers!

Bob: The law specifies that the bottle be recorked or enclosed in such a way that it would show if it were tampered with. We’ll explore this in more depth in a subsequent posting …

We now have two experiences. 9/22 at L’Auberge dining room. Captain most enthusiatic about new law. I had half a bottle of far better than any two glasses off the “by the glass” list. Corked it, took it home, and enjoyed it later. 9/28 at Sturkey’s [Cincinnati]. Wine geek [their term]Told me they are all into this, but it is REALY NEW, and they don’t have their “approved bags yet” - maybe in a couple of weeks. Since they also have a decent half bottle list, I decided to let the fact of the three months since signing go. Question for Mark: Does the law say anything about containers for carry out, beyond just “corked?”

Our website www.togobrand.com offers wine-to-go-law compliant bags as well, and have seen a spike in sales to the Ohio Market. We’re offering free freight on shipments to Ohio through October 31, 2006 - just mention the offer in the comment section of your on-line order.

We’ve seen a significant increase in the sales of wine doggy bags in Ohio so it must be working. Interesting that we also are getting lots of sales from consumers who want to give it as gifts to their wine loving friends. Thanks, Ohio for all of your support. Did you guys get a chance to see the full page article in the Wall Street Journal on wine doggy bags?

I went out with the intention of taking a bottle home (and I had a fistful of bags in the car in case the restaurant was out), but I ended up finishing the bottle and heading home empty handed. I will try again tonight.

Mark you have delighted and educated me in the world of wines for years. I thank you. So there are people out there who never finish a bottle while dining out eh?
