News Flash: historic Stag’s Leap sold to Ste. Michelle, Antinori

79-year-old Warren Winiarski has reached agreement to sell his historic Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa to a partnership that includes Washington State-based Ste. Michelle and Italian wine producer Antinori, according to this Decanter.com story as well as this press release reprinted on WineBusiness.com this morning.

Restaurant Week experiences

I’m heading out tonight (Sunday) for the opening bell (5 p.m.) of Restaurant Week, and I hope you Daytonians have reservations somewhere yourself, either tonight or later this week. Hallelujah! The full tastings list is back!

The full, complete, expertly assembled (because it wasn’t assembled by me) wine-tastings list is back, back, back, thanks to the return of our greatly appreciated wine listserv overseers from their wine-soaked trip to Europe. And Uncorked readers can give thanks. Now they can view the comprehensive list in one piece rather than depending on the wine shop and restaurant folks to submit their own events via blog comments. The short, painful leap from wine to tequila

My colleague Alexis Larsen and her partner in writing the Lounge Lizard column in the Go! section of the Dayton Daily News, Craig Schrolucke, have launched a Lounge Lizards blog on all things spiritous. Today’s entry is entitled “The Perfect Frozen Margarita” and comes from an email I received in response to a short blurb about July 25 being “National Tequila Day.” Take a look at the recipe and see if you agree to its claim to perfection.

I remember the time my father — who liked his martinis and Manhattans — tasted tequila for the first time. I think it was Jose Cuervo Gold — there were about 5 tequilas on earth 30 years ago, compared to what, 3,000 or so today?

“Tastes like turpentine” was my dad’s response.

But there is something about a well-made margarita …

After all, man does not live by wine alone …

Everything you need to know about Restaurant Week

After a record-shattering winter 2007 Restaurant Week in which more than 6,700 diners ate three-course meals for $20.07 at 41 Dayton-area restaurants, the Miami Valley Restaurant Association announced last week that 48 restaurants have agreed to participate in the summer version, which begins Sunday and runs through next Friday.

“Restaurant Week has caught on,” said Lisa Grigsby, president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association. “People are looking forward to it, and they¹re talking about it. They want to be part of the excitement.”

During Restaurant Week, patrons can dine on a three-course meal for $20.07 while also helping out a pair of local charities. For each special meal served, the restaurant will donate $1, with the proceeds benefitting Clothes That Work, which provides appropriate clothing for those going on job interviews, and Oak Tree Corner, which helps children and families deal with grief.

Restaurant owners strongly recommend calling to check on availability and hours. At many restaurants, reservations are required. The list of participating restaurants and what they intend to serve to Restaurant week diners can be viewed at this DineOutDayton.org site.

Remember that tax, tip and beverages are not included in the $20.07 price. Also keep in mind that you should be able to take leftover wine home in a sealed bottle, assuming the restaurant is taking advantage of the relatively new state law that allows the practice. Wouldn¹t hurt to ask in advance if that’s your intention.

Italian wines, Italian food

Some of you may have missed this story entitled “New Italian Restaurant planned for Centerville” about Keith Taylor’s plans to open a new place in the spot that formerly housed Eclipse (later renamed Blue Moon) restaurant in Centerville.

The reader comments portion of the story is highly entertaining. Quite a diversity of viewpoints, to say the least. How did our web site end up attracting so very many nattering nabobs of negativism? Yowzah.

Taylor told me he intends to offer 200 to 300 wines by the bottle (and 18 by the glass), and he wants to buck convention a bit with his wine list, making one-half of the list consist of Italian wines.

What do you think of this idea?

I hope diners respond favorably to the wine-list makeup. I’ve always had the impression that Italian wines don’t always show well by themselves or in comparative tastings with wines from other countries, because they tend to be a bit more structured, a bit more restrained, and less obviously fruit-driven than their counterparts. But pair them with good Italian food, and something magical happens. The wines blossom, and end up perfectly complementing the cuisine.

Italian food and Italian wine belong together — and it sounds like Taylor agrees.

One brash young New Jersey wine retailer who turned his family’s sleepy little wine shop into a thriving $45 million enterprise told wine industry executives they must embrace technologicial change or die, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

The future will be all about e-commerce — using the internet to promote and sell wine, the retailer suggests.

Mega-wholesalers prepare for Ohio showdown

Hmmm. You folks who are in the wine business out there, in either the wholesale or retail or winery end, can help the rest of us understand the significance of this press release entitled “Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. Announces Expansion Into Ohio, Acquiring Paramount Distillers Brokerage Operation”.

Southern is a huge distributor/wholesaler of wines, spirits, beer and other beverages, operating in 27 states or so including New York, California, Florida and Illinois. But this is the company’s first entry into Ohio.

What will this mean for other wholesalers? Retail wine shops? And most of all … consumers? MIght Southern partner with another very large national wholesaler that is already established in Ohio — Glazer — to attempt to do away with the state-mandated minimum markups on wine?

Hmmmm.

Did we mention new wine-tasting venues downtown?

Did we mention the new place to taste wines downtown? Well, 5th Street Wine & Deli isn’t the only new place to taste wine downtown. Therapy Cafe, 452 E. Third St., has launched a Sunday Wine Series from 4 to 8 p.m. every Sunday. July 22 features wines of Oregon, July 29 the wines of Washington state, and Aug. 5 the wines of South Africa.

These two regular wine tastings join the Friday night and Saturday afternoon tastings at Jay’s Kitchen Door, behind Jay’s Restaurant; the Wednesday night tastings at the Wine Gallery & Cafe; and the Thursday night tastings at Pacchia as casual, drop-in wine tastings in and around downtown. Am I missing any others?

Who says there’s nothing to do in downtown Dayton?

A new place to taste wines

The 5th Street Wine & Deli, 416 E. Fifth St. in Dayton’s Oregon Historic District, will hold its inaugural drop-in wine tasting Saturday, July 28, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring five Italian wines. The wine shop’s owner, Rob Strong, said he will hold wine tastings and beer tastings on alternating Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

I might have suggested to Rob that local wine tasters will never be able to remember whether any given Saturday is a wine day or a beer day at the deli. He said he may switch to every-week wine tastings if things go well. For now, the second wine tasting is scheduled Aug. 11.

The wines for the inaugural July 28 tasting will be:

Local wine community loses one of its own

Clifford Hyland “Hy” Schooley, a long-time member of the Dayton-area wine-tasting scene, passed away Friday. He was 73. His obituary can be accessed by clicking here and navigating to the entries for last names starting with “S.”

Family members have told Hy’s friends that he died unexpectedly while on vacation in Michigan.

Hy was a quiet, dignified, affable man who appreciated fine wine and pleasant conversation. If memory serves, he was one of the founding members (or darn close) of the Breakfast Club wine-tasting group, an ever-changing and welcoming collection of wine tasters that began meeting at Arrow Wine three decades ago and which still gathers with its new generations of members every Saturday to this day.

I didn’t know Hy well — some of the information in his obituary about his engineering career surprised me — but I do know this: he knew his wines, and I never saw him speak an ill word to anyone, ever.

He’ll be missed.

One of Miami Valley’s own leaps into wine blogging pool

We’ve mentioned the many distinguished alumni of the Miami Valley working in prominent positions in the wine industry, including Jim Gordon, the West Milton native and former editor at Wine Spectator who now serves as editor of Wines & Vines magazine. Gordon’s making waves again, this time by jumping into the blogging pool with Wine Enthusiast magazine. You can read Gordon’s blog, entitled “Unreserved,”, and his entry about conducting his own Two-Buck Chuck blind taste test. Suffice to say Jim didn’t choose Charles Shaw as his best chardonnay in all of California.

Always plenty of room in the wine-blogging pool for great reads such as this … Cheers to “Miami County Jim” and to the birth of Unreserved!

Wine tasters gone wild

Dayton-area wine tasters are positively angelic next to some of the idiots and fools who hit the wine-tasting trail in various points in New York, according to this New York Times story entitled “New York Wineries Face Tastings Gone Wild”.

An excerpt:

There also are reports of tastings gone wild involving intoxicated visitors who have tossed back full glasses of wine without regard to nose or body until they grabbed the brass spittoon for baser purposes. The latest additions to local lore include a story about members of an inebriated group at the Palmer Vineyards here who hopped off a hayride and began gallivanting naked through the vines. Then there were the drunken customers at the Pugliese Vineyards in Cutchogue who jumped into the shimmering lake next to the elegant outdoor tasting area. And the bachelorette parties that often culminate in tabletop dances, to the horror of nearby oenophiles sniffing or sipping the local chardonnays.

Now, I’m a veteran of the local wine-tasting scene — not the most grizzled veteran, but a veteran nonetheless — and I’ve seen a few things, knowwhatImean? But dude … nothing that compares to this. Must be our midwestern sensibilities. Or maybe our moms raised us better.

Of course, all social trends start in New York, then come to Ohio in due time … So, how soon will we see this kind of behavior here in southwest Ohio?

For that matter, what have I missed out there on the Miami Valley’s wine-tasting venues? What’s the most — um — interesting or outrageous thing you’ve seen or experienced on the tasting circuit?

A tastings list to savor and (especially) appreciate

Week in and week out, Uncorked brings you a comprehensive list of wine tastings, special wine dinners, winery happenings and other events every Friday (or thereabouts), all of it courtesy of the crack team of highly trained employees of a Dayton-based wine listserv who compile the information.

Well, wouldn’t you know, by sheer coincidence, every highly trained employee of that listserv team is going on vacation at the same time, starting next week. So please appreciate this week’s list for the pristine beauty that it is, and recognize it will take a different form the next two weeks, when savvy wine retailers, restaurant owners and winery folks will seize the opportunity to list their tastings as comments to Uncorked entries, since that’s realistically the only way we’re going to know what’s going on without that team of highly trained wine listserv employees to do all of the heavy lifting involved in bringing you this wonderfully comprehensive list.

French winemaker ‘activists’ turn on their own

We’ve marveled before at the tactics of some radical French winemakers and the ways in which they choose to voice their displeasure toward their government’s policies.

Well, they’re at it again, according to Decanter.com, which reports that a group of radical winemakers in the south of France (Languedoc) set off bombs that targeted their fellow winemakers. Apparently, this radical group doesn’t believe their colleagues are quite radical enough, and they’ve decided to blow up their colleagues’ offices to try to convince them to come around to their way of thinking.

What happened to the good old days of using merde to make your point?

We on this side of the pond should not for one New York minute assume that this splinter group of kooks somehow represents the sensibilities of French winemakers as a whole. Bombing the offices of their fellow winemakers? In fact, bombing anything at all? They’re not protestors. They’re terrorists. And fools.

California’s ‘best chardonnay’: How consistent is Two-Buck Chuck?

Early word out of California is that a 2005 Charles Shaw Chardonnay has been named California’s best in the California State Fair wine competition.

The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat story notes that the fair’s judges found the ‘05 Charles Shaw — more commonly known as Two-Buck Chuck and available at Trader Joe’s — was “the highest-scoring chardonnay in a blind tasting by judges who reviewed wines without regard to price.”

The story also noted that, “The wine used for judging was selected by the Bronco Wine Co. and submitted to the competition.” Although, couldn’t the same be said about every other wine in the competition?

My question: Does the Charles Shaw 2005 Chardonnay on the shelf of TJ’s in Kettering, Ohio taste exactly the same as the wine proclaimed California’s finest in all price ranges?

After all, I did have A Trader Joe’s Wine-Buying Experience, and, shortly thereafter, wrote a follow-up entry entitled Trader Joe’s Pulls Italian White Off Store Shelves Nationwide.

If anyone attempts to re-create (on a smaller scale) the California State Fair’s chardonnay smackdown by pitting Charles Shaw against some other California wines in a truly blind tasting, let us know your results …
