Brits drink more American wine than French
I’m always amazed that the British drink so much Australian wine — it is their top wine of choice, ahead of France, Italy, America, Portugal, Germany — you name it.
But now, there’s a new number two.
More American wine than French was drunk in Britain for the first time ever — EVER — last year, according to this story in the London Evening Standard’s ThisIsLondon web site.
The story attributes the turnaround primarily to the British love for California rose.
They’ve got to be kidding, right? I mean, there are some very fine California roses, but if I’m in Great Britain, and I have my pick of French roses … well …
Am I crazy? I mean, about this topic, anyway?

Before you all get too excited this mainly covers “value” wine, i.e. the cheap stuff that is bought and drunk by people with little wine knowledge or the desire to trade up in the current financial climate. Just because the U.S. can produce some of the cheapest wines in the world (apparently just behind Australia) isn’t anything to be overly proud of, for the likes of someone like me, who knows a little about wine, the U.S. offerings in my local U.K. supermarkets are few and far between in the $10-$30 range, and typically overpriced compared to France, Spain & Italy.

Let’s face it. When I think England, I think beer. That being said, if you ever go to London there is an absolutely amazing place to visit called Vinopolis. Vinopolis is a great place that has exhibits on wine through history and wines from all over the world. You can taste a ton of different wines, including wine from places like Eastern Europe. They seem to have a unique perspective.

Mark, the Brits hate the French, they have hated them since Hastings-on-the-Green in 1066. They like us. We saved their cheese twice already. They forgot about us revolting against them and defeating them in 2 wars.We saved the French, too but they don’t care. Can I have some Freedom Fries with my Chateau Methylene Glycol, please?

Well, apparently the Brits prefer new world, fruit forward wines. Perhaps the exchange rate made California wines a good deal, in their collective opinion. As for me, I’d rather drink a good Tavel from France any day! So if you’re crazy, I’m right there with you…
