DLM Champagne and sparkling wine tasting, in review
* UPDATED * I didn’t think I’d ever see the day when I’d see a picture like the one on today’s front page of the Dayton Daily News, did you? If you don’t have home delivery of the DDN, check out the racks at the grocery store or gas station today and take a gander at the front-page, above-the-fold -photo from last night’s DLM wine tasting. And congrats to Stephany Madliger, George Punter (whose mug is prominently displayed in the photo) and the rest of the DLM event’s organizers.
Golly gee whiz, there were about two dozen sparklers strutting their stuff tonight (12-29-08) at the Dorothy Lane Market Champagne and sparkling wine tasting at the DLM Oakwood store. Lots of great stuff. A few of my favorites: H. Billiot Fils 1998 Grand Cru Brut ($65/bottle), Rene Geoffroy 1999 Brut (($105), Duval-Leroy Brut Champagne ($40), Mumm de Cramant ($65), Egly-Ouriet Les Vigne de Vrigny Brut ($53), and Gosset Brabant Brut Tradition ($46).
The opportunity to taste wines of this pedigree — at a fraction of the cost, obviously, of a full bottle — was quite a treat.
I’ve got a story running in tomorrow morning’s Dayton Daily News that recommends sparkling wines, but the story was due several days ago and will not reflect any of the the samples from the DLM event, unfortunately. And no, I didn’t try all 23 sparklers available.
Any favorites you’d like to share?

A great evening of good food, wine and sharing holiday greetings with fellow winos. Much better than watching on of the miriad of no-name bowl games. The 98 Billiot Fils Grand Cru Brut was a classic rich, yeasty well aged bubbly. Anyone that says white wines do not age well should sample this one. If you like just a hint of sweetness, check out the Mumm de Cramant, like a crisp juicy apple, great for sipping by the fire after dinner. But my favorite was the Egly-Ouriet Les Vigne de Vrigny Brut bright crisp fruit up front and a elegant full-bodied finish, a great match with the raw tuna appetizer marinated with black sesame seeds. It is tough decision to figure out which one toast the New Year.
