Here’s my NYEve wine — what was yours?

Here’s the bottle of wine I chose to ring in the new year with: the 1998 Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines.

The wine came within about four hours of making it into its second decade of life before I pulled the plug on it. But it was fully mature and ready to drink, with nicely evolved aromas of cedar and spices. It had lightened up a bit with age, showing the color and weight that suggested Burgundy or old Nebbiolo. But the spicy, complex flavors were all Chateauneuf.

What did YOU enjoy on New Year’s Eve — or in the early hours of 2009?

Started with a bottle of Vilmart Grand Cellier 1er Cru Champagne. Holy crap is about all I can say. Oddly, the restaurant where we dined had it priced within a few bucks of Agent Orange, even though the Vilmart is considerably more retail. No accounting for taste or something like that.

Domaine Rebourseau Clos de Vougeot 1998 - It was so good that Chuck and I drank it too fast and ended up very tipsy very early. Luckily, we spent the evening at home.

We had a nice Napa Chandon sparkler with dinner and an Iron Horse Brut for ringing in the New Year. I think the Iron Horse was too cold since it seemed to open more later in the evening. We all preferred the Chandon.

We attended a party at a friends house complete with a variety of bubblies and still wines, fireworks and a cannon. We started the new year at breakfast with the Handley Brut Rose from California paired with Eggs Benedict. For our New Year’s Day open house we featured a 3 liter Cambria Pinot Noir plus a lot of contributions from our friends.

Ended the year with fish and white wines. Definitely the best of the evening was the 2000 Domaine Laroche Chablis Granad Cru Les Blanchots. Lots of restrained fruit and acid and that wonderful flinty taste I like at the end of a Chablis. Good wine.

We ate at Doc’s Place in Lebanon where they had a fabulous prime rib / lobster tail dinner with soup, salad, rosemary potatoes and fresh snow peas. This little, out of the way restaurant/bar has consistently good food and is quite a find. Wine Geek Alert— a limited wine list but the mark-up is minimal.
