Arrow’s 75th anniversary tasting taking shape nicely
Arrow Wine & Spirits, as part of its 75th anniversary celebration that will extend through the year, is hosting a Special Winemakers Tasting from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 at Arrow’s Centerville store at 615 Lyons Road. This is a drop-in event, with the prices of wine samples based on the cost of the wine, so no reservations are required.
According to the Arrow folks, seven winemakers scheduled to be part of the tasting are from Boeger, Kings Ridge, Rathbone Wine Group (Australian wines - Mt. Langi-Ghiran, Yering Station), Via Pacifica (New Zealand wines - Bird, Huia, Trinity Hill, Spinyback), Gerard Bertrand and Terre Rouge.
Ann Boucher, marketing director for Cutting Edge Selections wine distributor that is collaborating with Arrow for the tasting, provided a list of some of the wines that will be available at the tasting, and, well, let’s just say the event shows great promise. In addition to the producers mentioned above, wines will be tasted from Broadbent Seletions and Robert Kacher Selections, among others.
Seventy-five years in business is a significant milestone, and it looks like Arrow is starting off a year of celebrations on the right foot. For more information about the event, call (937) 433-6778.

Camp Emanuel fundraiser hits the right note
The 33rd Annual “For the Love of Wine” tasting benefitting Camp Emanuel held Sunday, April 26, at Jay’s Restaurant had a great vibe, attracted a robust crowd of 90-plus people, and raised a significant amount of money for a worthy cause.
Four out of the final five live-auction items — a multi-course wine dinner for eight at Rue Dumaine restaurant, a multi-course dinner in Jay’s Restaurant’s wine cellar, a prepared-in-your-home wine dinner by Eric Jerardi of The Little Store, and a single bottle of 1986 Chateau Latour — all sold for more than $1,000 each. The fifth, a single bottle of 1986 Chateau Margaux, sold for “only” $950.
Proceeds benefitted a day and resident camp in southwest Ohio that serves hearing-impaired and developmentally-impaired youths and hearing youths.
A buffet-style lunch was served by the folks at Jay’s, and an interesting array of wines was provided by Charles Landis Jr.
All in all, a very fine event.

Wine rebate offer expires this week
Mail-in rebate offers involving wine purchases haven’t been around all that long in Ohio, but this one seems fairly generous: Buy six bottles of Banrock Station wines, mix or match — they’re currently on sale for $4.99 a bottle, so that half-case will cost you about $30 — and you can take advantage of a $15 mail-in rebate, bringing the ultimate cost of each bottle to $2.49 ($14.94 for six bottles, before taxes).
Ready for the fine print?
First, you have to buy the wine before April 30 — this Thursday. You also have to get your hands on one of the tiny, bottle-neck-hanger rebate forms (more on that in a moment), and you must mail in the rebate materials before May 15. A $15 check will come in six to eight weeks.
There’s no internet link to this rebate form, to my knowledge (I suspect some states don’t allow such rebates for wine; Ohio did not allow it until a couple of years ago). Brian Linnean of the Wine Gallery & Cafe was passing the rebate forms out and alerted me to the deal while he was working at his satellite wine shop/booth at the Second Street Market Saturday morning, although the deal is not exclusive to his shops.
I haven’t tried Banrock Station’s wines — which hail from Australia — lately, and rebate offers can be a pain in the patootie, but at $2.50 a bottle, in these tough times … it’s an offer worth passing along.

Former WSU engineering dean poised to open region’s only winery
Color me skeptical four years ago when I sat in in the basement of Jim Brandeberry’s country home north of Yellow Springs and listened to the soon-to-be-retired dean of Wright State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science describe his dream of someday opening a commercial winery complete with tasting room right here in the Miami Valley.
Today, color me wrong.
Since his retirement, Brandeberry has utilized every bit of his engineering skills by methodically planning and executing a plan that fulfills his vision of turning an already ambitious home winemaking passion into an even more ambitious commercial winemaking venture.
The brand new, 2,400-square-foot Brandeberry Winery and Tasting Room is scheduled to open June 4 at 5118 W. Jackson Road in southern Clark County.Ohio’s newest winery becomes the only licensed winery in the Dayton-Springfield area.
Brandeberry could barely contain his enthusiasm as he showed off his tasting room and winery, where the wines he’ll be pouring in June are resting comfortably in bottle or vat. His tasting room will feature a variety of wines and styles — and from all parts of the country, including Clark County.
Chardonnay, merlot and blackberry wines are made from grapes grown in New York State, and a syrah originated in Lodi, California. There is an all-estate-grown wine: “Windy Ike,” a white wine made from Seyval Blanc grapes grown in the vineyards just up the hill from the winery and tasting room. The wine had an eventful and complicated birth courtesy of the winds from Hurricane Ike, which spawned the wine’s name.
Brandeberry also makes a Mad River Red and Mad River White that contain a portion of his grapes, plus there’s his “Pink Passion” — a blend of estate-grown Cayuga grape wine augmented by a splash of or two of cherry juice (his wife Sharon provided a bit of winemaking advice on that one). It is the sweetest offering on the wine-tasting menu, but is not cloying, and like Brandeberry’s other wines, it is well-balanced and appealing.
The tasting room has picnic tables outside and wine-themed murals painted on the walls. Visitors can snack on cheese and crackers, and Sharon Brandeberry will occasionally serve up some home-cooked fare from the farmhouse’s kitchen. Brandeberry said the winery will host some grill-your-own steak cookouts “on an irregular basis.”
Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, said she’s pleased her group’s newest member will be showcasing Ohio-grown fruit in some of his wines, and predicted a bright future.
“We’re elated to have someone like Jim launching a commercial wine operation. His years of home winemaking experience coupled with his engineering background — topped by several years of careful planning — portend well for a successful winery venture with excellent wines,” Winchell said.
The winery’s location between the Dayton and Columbus wine markets will make it easily accessible “to both serious consumers and newbies interested in exploring wines from both cities,” she said.
A grand opening is planned for the July 4 weekend, so the period between June 4 and July 4 will be a “soft opening” of sorts. Brandeberry said he’s not quite sure what to expect. The winery is definitely off the beaten path — some roads leading to it don’t have signs, because hand-made signs have fallen off trees. But the winemaker and retired engineering dean has plans to fix those shortcomings.
And when Jim Brandeberry has plans to do something, take my advice — don’t be skeptical. Chances are, it’s going to get done.

Dr. Vino dustup morphs into wine ethics debate
It’s here, it’s addictive, it’s a follow-up installment entitled “Changes at The Wine Advocate? Correspondence with Parker and Miller” to the Dr. Vino original piece we mentioned last week, and it has morphed into a robust international debate about ethics and wine reviewers. Warning: If you start reading the 89 comments, you might … not … stop…

British con men bilk French wine producers
Take a look at this Decanter.com story about French wine producers getting scammed by con men posing as British wine merchants.
And this scam is nearly identical to one that occurred just last year? And there’s a good chance the problem is far more widespread than reported because some wine producers who were victimized are too embarrassed to come forward?
Incredible.
Anyone want to buy a 1797 Lafite? It’s got Thomas Jefferson’s initials on it …

Dr. Vino delivers the robust give-and-take you won’t find on erobertparker.com
As a blogger who occasionally struggles with decisions on how to moderate the comments posted on my blog’s entries, I find this entry from the Dr. Vino blog entitled “The X’d files: an exchange not seen on eRobertParker.com” fascinating.
By the way, I have a journalism degree too — and I I most assuredly did NOT graduate summa cum laude.
Pour yourself a glass of wine for this one.

The ‘Hills Were Alive’ at this Austrian wine luncheon
The Winds Cafe has an Austrian weekend dinner menu scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, and while the menu isn’t posted yet as of this writing, I can tell you one thing: an Austrian wine luncheon the restaurant hosted on March 14 was fabulous, and it was also a bargain for $40.
The Winds invited David Schildknecht, of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate fame, to lead a tasting of Austrian wines, which The Winds paired with Austrian dishes. The event was held at the Winds Wine Cellar next door to the restaurant.
Strap on your drool cup and take a look at the menu for the March 14 event:
— Austrian egg, served with Nigl 2005 Sekt and Brundlmayer 2002 Sekt sparkling wines;
— Monkfish with Apple, Rose Essence and Parsley Oil, served with Alzinger 2007 Gruner Beltliner Steinertal Smaragd and Nikolaihof 2007 Gruner Veltliner Im Weingebirge Federspiel;
— Oyster Pot Pie, served with Prieler 2006 Pinot Blanc Seeberg and Heidi Schrock 2007 Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc);
— Smoked Trout Cake with Beet Vinaigrette, served with Alzinger 2007 Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd and Hirsch 2003 Gaisberg Riesling;
— Rabbit with Mushrooms and Tarragon, served with Prieler 2006 Blaufrankisch Johannishohe and Schiefer 2006 Blaufrankisch Eisenberg;
— Lemon Polenta Cake with Elderflower Syrup (made at the Nikolaihof winery) and fresh berries.
Some of these wines were among the very best examples of their varietals that exist in Austria, and the quality showed (and it also showed in their retail price tags — the wines ranged in price from $22.99 to $69.99). I’ve always been a bit lukewarm on Austrian wines, which struck me as overly lean and sometimes overly acidic — think a poorly made trocken German wine.
But the wines Schildknecht chose — in particular the gruner veltliners and rieslings — were a revelation. The GruVe’s and rieslings were ripe, but not fruit-driven in any sense of the term. They had ample minerality, bracing acidity and a beautiful balance. Schildknecht predicts they’ll age beautifully, and since he knows the wines in this part of the world like the back of his hand, and has tasted through multiple vintages, I think I’ll take his word for it.
Schildknecht was clearly excited by the two Blaufrankischs, the only red wines in the tasting, which offered some similarities to pinot noir in a lean, taut frame. My revelation with this grape will have to wait for another day, but the wines were interesting to try, and paired well with the rabbit dish.
Toward the end of the luncheon, I could almost hear the faint echo from the Von Trapp Family singers. For a few hours, the hills were alive — and so was The Winds. Maybe a touch of that Austrian magic will return this weekend.

Share your best wine and kissing story
If you would like to be able to say, someday, that you “wrote the book” on wine and kissing, well … this web site entitled simply wineandkissing.com is for you.
The web site’s premise:
Call it remarkable, call it alchemy, call it magic wine before and after a precious kiss is not the same wine. Perhaps you have a story to share of a romantic experience that involved wine? I want you to tell me about
WINE AND A MEMORABLE KISS OR KISSES … YOUR MOST SENSUOUS DESCRIPTION OF WINE … WINE THAT BROUGHT TWO PEOPLE TOGETHER … THE MOST ROMANTIC PLACE THAT INVOLVED WINE … THE MOST ROMANTIC PERSON WITH WHOM YOU SHARED WINE … A STORY INVOLVING LOVE AND WINE
No, it’s not an invitation to soft-core … well, you know. But it might not be rated PG either. But it is legitimate, in that the link to the web site arrived in my email inbox accompanied by an email from Paul Wagner, owner and president of Balzac Communications and Marketing. Here’s an excerpt from his email:
I am writing to you with a rather unusual request, and I hope you will take the time to help. As you may know, I teach a class at Napa Valley College called “A Cultural Appreciation of Wine.” It’s an exploration of wine and culture throughout history, and we touch on everything from wine and medicine to art, religion, politics, and love. One of my students, Elisabet Alhambra (her pen name), became very interested in the connection between wine and romance—-the connection between the touch of a glass to the lips, and the touching of two pairs of lips together. She’s had a lot of fun with the project, and she is spending her free time researching historic literature for more fun. She has found some wonderful quotes and passages—and we think there just might be the kernel of book in all of this. But we also think that this book might be even more fun if we could get a few of the more entertaining and visible people in the wine industry to offer a few thoughts on the topic of wine and love, kissing and romance.
So there. If you’re a reader of Uncorked, I consider you one of the “more entertaining and visible people in the wine industry,” so … share and share away, both on Elisabet’s web site and, of course, right here on Uncorked.
If you dare.

Good Friday, and an even better Saturday — for tasting wine in Dayton
There are good Fridays, and then there’s Good Friday. And let’s not forget an entire Easter weekend filled with enticing tastings at virtually every wine shop on every corner in every nook and cranny of the Miami Valley. It just goes to show you that when it comes right down to it, we are … well … blessed.
Yet another sign of spring has popped up in the following list of wine tastings and dinners in the Dayton area: The first 2008 European rose’s have made it to our shores and onto store shelves. A joyous occasion indeed.
Note also that Milla Handley of Handley Cellars is in town next week for some special events that include a tasting on April 14 at Bella Vino in Springboro, and I believe she’ll also be at The Winds in Yellow Springs for a 7 p.m. wine dinner on April 17.
How much joy can one wine community take?
Let’s find out.

Americans, Canadians buck worldwide trend, boost wine consumption
Check out the hot-off-the-presses Associated Press story headlined “World wine consumption falls for 1st time in years”.
The numbers paint a picture of declining consumption in the traditional wine countries such as France and Italy while New World countries such as the U.S., Australia and Canada are discovering the magic of the grape in ever-increasing numbers.
Here’s an excerpt from the AP story:
After years of non-stop growth, global wine consumption started to retreat last year, along with the rest of the world economy, The International Organization of Vine and Wine said Tuesday.
The overall drop isn’t too dramatic: The group says its initial estimates for 2008 show consumption down 0.8 percent, at 243 million hectoliters (6.4 billion gallons) compared to 2007’s 245 million hectoliters.
But the latest figures on wine making and drinking around the world reveal a few key shifts. For the first time, the United States surpassed Italy in terms of total wine consumption, with 27.3 million hectoliters compared to 26 million for Italy, the group said.
… Consumption fell in all of Europe’s major wine-producing and consuming countries, including France, Italy and Germany, Europe’s biggest wine-drinking nations. The United States, Canada and Australia saved the day by raising more and more glasses, partially offsetting the European drop.
Nice to be on the positive side of this trend. But these numbers beg the question: What will 2009 bring?
We’ll ponder that over a nice glass of Riesling …
Thanks to Denise for spotting this story and forwarding it to Uncorked …

If you had to choose one red-wine varietal to drink for the rest of your life …
If you had to choose one red-wine varietal to drink for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I vote syrah as my desert-island red. French syrah, if I must choose a country of origin.
The grape attracted the attention of Forbes.com last week, and the grape has earned it.
Syrah has two stylistic extremes, it seems. In France’s northern Rhone, winemakers produce syrahs labeled not by the grape, but by their regions of origin: Cornas, Croze-Hermitage, Cote-Rotie, Hermitage. The wines share a common, defining syrah characteristic: a smoky-peppery quality that makes it seem as if a few Tellicherry black peppercorns were tossed into the barrels during fermentation, and a dash of powdered white pepper sprinkled into each bottle just before corking.
In warmer-climate Australia, where the grape is known at shiraz, winemakers focus on the jammy dark-fruits characteristics of the grape. While Aussie winemakers have made some blockbuster shiraz, the wines don’t seem to achieve the same level of complexity — the alluring layers of aromas and tastes that can’t be traced to fruit and oak — that the French seem to be able to coax from their vineyards. California syrahs — which are a relative bargain compared to that state’s cabernet sauvignon, merlot and (especially) pinot noir — seem to fall stylistically between the French and Australian extremes, depending on where the grapes are grown and the winemaker’s goal.
While French syrahs from Cote-Rotie and Hermitage can fetch astonishing prices, the wines from Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage are more reasonably priced, and they’re available on local wine shelves. Dorothy Lane Market’s Oakwood store just Friday night offered for tasting the 2003 Guigal Crozes-Hermitage ($26), and the wine was drinking beautifully. The same wine from the 2005 vintage also excelled, but will benefit from a couple of years of aging.
When I told my wine-tasting friend Tony — a Burgundy aficionado who found the Forbes link and forwarded it to me — about my choice of syrah as my desert island wine, I expected a spirited rebuttal. To my surprise, he didn’t disagree. Rhone Valley syrahs, he acknowledged, “are food friendly and consistently good, even the lower priced ones; not as fickle as Burgundies.”
I’m not looking to spend the remainder of my days on any desert island, but a lifetime supply of French syrah certainly would make the stay more tolerable.

Wine tastings capture spring in a glass
Spring hasn’t exactly sprung, but it sure is trying. Perhaps we can nudge it along a bit if we awaken from our hibernation and drop in on one of the many, many, many wine tastings and events across the Miami Valley and southwest Ohio.
We’ve got the list, which has grown by one venue this week with the addition of Village Cellars in Lebanon (there is always room for more wine tastings, don’t you think?).
This amazing list comes to Uncorked courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv, and it’s as inviting as a warm spring day:
