2007 may be vintage to lift all boats in parts of Italy, France
Here’s a copy of a wine column scheduled to run in Friday’s (5-29-09) Dayton Daily News:
Early indications suggest there’s a fine vintage for red wines fermenting in some key growing areas of Italy and France — and it may be the kind of across-the-board excellence that elevates even the most humble (and comparatively inexpensive) bottlings to unexpected heights.
That was one overrriding impression from the 20th anniversary celebration hosted by the wine importer and distributor Vintner Select earlier this month at its temperature-controlled Mason warehouse. The anniversary turned out to be quite a gathering: more than 20 winemakers from around the world, including several who flew in from Italy, were on hand to pour and discuss their wines, some of which are not yet available in the U.S. (Vintner Select distributes wine in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana). Representatives of wine shops, restaurants and grocers from throughout Ohio and the tri-state attended, and Vintner brought in Cincinnati chef Jean-Robert de Cavel and local food producers to provide food for the event.
The producers and winemakers who traveled to Ohio from Italy were pouring samples of high-end reds from Piedmont, Tuscany and every other corner of the country. Barolo producers such as Cavallotto, Manzone and Mauro Molino sampled multiple Barolos, most of them in the $40 to $80 range, and most coming from the 2005 vintage, with a handful of 2001s, 2003s and 2004s mixed in. The wines were young, tannic and immensely promising.
But it was the humbler bottlings from those and other Italian producers from the 2007 vintage that hit my sweet spot, especially for value.
In Piedmont, Barolo producers often plant the prized Nebbiolo grapes in the south-facing slopes and other best vineyard sites, and plant either Dolcetto or Barbera grapes in the areas not considered to be the most advantageous. Yet, in the ‘07 vintage, those Dolcettos and Barberas positively shine with bright, concentrated fruit and fine balance. Same goes with the Nebbiolo-based wines from the Langhe region, which produces the equivalent of poor-man’s Barolo.
Wines such as the Cavallotto 2007 Dolcetto d’Alba Scot ($17.99) and the Mauro Molino 2007 Mauro Molino Barbera d’Alba ($17.99) were spot-on examples of their grape varietals, are drinking great now, but will improve with short-term aging.
There’s a similar phenomenon occurring in the Rhone region of France, where the 2007 vintage has gotten some rave reviews, and the early indications are those raves are well-deserved. I’m a fan of Cotes-du-Rhone wines — the least expensive from the region that produces legendary and pricey wines such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage and Cote-Rotie — and every one of the half-dozen or so ‘07s I’ve tried have been flavorful, concentrated and well-balanced — much like the aforementioned Italian reds from the same vintage.
The best of the bunch so far is the 2007 Delas Cotes-du-Rhone Saint-Esprit Syrah and Grenache, a fruity, peppery red-wine bargain at $12.99.
In Italy, the ‘07 Barolos still require some time in barrel before they can be released. But based on the quality of their less-expensive stablemates from the same vintage, one can only imagine the quality resting comfortably in the caves and wineries of Piedmont. Same goes for the ‘07 Chateauneufs from the Rhone. If the monetary exchange rate cooperates, this may be a vintage to remember — and to enjoy for years go come.
Wine Update of the Week: Back in March, we told you about Red Truck Wines’ three-liter Mini-Barrel. The barrels — which contains the equivalent of four standard-sized (750 ml) bottles —weren’t available in Ohio at the time the parent company announced them, but they’re now available at several Dayton-area wine shops for $29.99, not counting a $3 mail-in rebate coupon that should be available at the retail outlets, according to John Davis, who works for the wine’s distributor. The wine is a blend of a blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

Visitation for Jay Haverstick to be held in his restaurant
Here’s a copy of a story scheduled to be published in tomorrow’s (5-24-09) Dayton Daily News:
By Mark Fisher and Kim Margolis Staff Writers
The funeral visitation for Jay Haverstick will be held Wednesday at the restaurant that bears his name, his family said Saturday, May 23.
“I wanted my dad to be in his restaurant one more time,” said Amy Haverstick, Jay’s daughter. “People knew my father because of his restaurant. I think people will feel more relaxed here, and we want to make this a celebration of his life.”
Mr. Haverstick, 69, was found dead Wednesday, May 20, in Death Valley National Park, California, after he failed to return from an early-morning photo shoot the previous day, May 19. His body was found in the “Sand Dunes” region in the central part of the park, about 1 1/2 miles from his car and 1/2 mile from a park ranger station.
Jeff Mullenhour, deputy coroner investigator for the Inyo County Coroner’s office, said Saturday that an autopsy showed Mr. Haverstick “collapsed and passed away in the desert as a result of the temperature and his existing medical conditions.” Mr. Haverstick had a history of heart problems and had had bypass surgery.
Visitation for the public will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 27 at Jay’s Restaurant, 225 E. Sixth St. in Dayton’s Oregon Historic District. Visitation for employees and past employees of Jay’s Restaurant will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. earlier Wednesday. The funeral, for family members and close friends, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Woodland Cemetery, according to Amy Haverstick.
Amy Haverstick made clear Saturday that the restaurant will continue despite its founder’s passing. Amy, 34, spent several years working for the Columbus-based Cameron Mitchell restaurant chain before returning to Dayton in 2002 to work alongside her father. She is co-owner of Jay’s and has taken a more active role in managing the restaurant in recent years.
“This restaurant was my father’s baby, and now it’s my baby,” she said.

Memorial Day weekend wine tastings list carries added meaning
Memorial Day carries significant and very personal meaning to each of us. But I’ll confess this Memorial Day weekend will be dominated by thoughts of Jay Haverstick, who loved wine almost as much as he loved his restaurant, his family and his community.
To the half-dozen or so people who have approached me about Jay asking, “What was he DOING out there?” My answer is, “Exactly what he wanted to be doing.”
This wine-tastings list compiled by a Dayton-based listserv will make it easier for you to lift a glass this weekend, whether it’s to Jay or someone else for whom Memorial Day brings a special meaning.

Sharing memories of Jay Haverstick
Yesterday was a surreal day for those of us who knew Jay Haverstick — and I know that includes many of you who read these pages of Uncorked.
Today brings an opportunity to reflect on the man whom one of our readers described simply (and quite accurately) as “a class act.”
I have a couple of very distinct images of Jay in my mind.
I’m not sure why the first one remains embedded there, but I have a mental picture of Jay from 10 or 15 years ago standing in his restaurant, addressing those of us who had gathered for one of his famous Saturday wine luncheons. He was holding a huge, ugly, slimy fish that must have been five or six feet long. I don’t remember the variety of fish, but he was holding it high in the air with both hands, and he was waxing eloquent about that fish, delivering more information about that variety of fish than any of us at the luncheon thought possible for one man to know.
Jay, always a well-dressed man, had on his usual perfectly starched white shirt, and the more he talked, and the more he held up this fish, the more it started leaking its natural juices down his arm, discoloring virtually the entire length of his sleeve, and eventually dripping onto the floor. Jay was unfazed. He may not have even noticed. Such was his passion for seafood, for running a restaurant, for teaching others how to enjoy life to its fullest.
Tight budgets and other responsibilities greatly reduced my attendance to those wine luncheons over the years. Today, I find myself wishing I had gone to every single damn one of them.
The second memory illustrates how sometimes it’s the smallest of kind gestures that are long remembered. It goes back about 16 or 17 years, when my oldest son, who is now 21, was maybe 4 or 5 years old.
I stopped in to Jay’s Kitchen Door, the shop behind Jay’s Restaurant that sells fresh seafood and hosts wine tastings, to buy some fish for dinner. Jay was in the shop — probably talking wine (or fish) with a customer — but shifted his attention quickly to my son, greeting him in a gentle, grandfatherly way. Jay disappeared for a moment into the restaurant, and came back with a package of oyster crackers for my son, who, I can assure you, thought those crackers were just about the coolest thing to eat as any food ever invented. I mean he scarfed ‘em down. He scored a couple more packages of those oyster crackers during subsequent visits.
My son still remembers those oyster crackers — and so do I. And I’ll always remember the man who gave them to him.

Mourning the loss of Jay Haverstick
Here’s a copy of a story scheduled to be published in Thursday’s Dayton Daily News:
At a luncheon in February 2006 celebrating Jay’s Restaurant’s 30th anniversary, founder Jay Haverstick reminisced about his days managing the old Yankee Tavern near Centerville back in the mid-1970s, when he first began scouting out the property in downtown Dayton’s shadow that he would turn into his namesake restaurant.
“I would come down here to walk around, and I saw a lot of very interesting people,” Mr. Haverstick said. “They didn’t dress like I did. They sure didn’t drink what I drank. Some of them didn’t have homes to go home to.”
His customers at the suburban Yankee Tavern “told me I was crazy” for relocating to the city’s core, Mr. Haverstick said. And there were times when he wondered whether the doubters had been right. “They told me if you build it they will come, but there were a few days when I thought to myself, when the heck are they going to get here?”
The restaurant erupted in laughter, and Mr. Haverstick grinned broadly. In fact, the customers did come, and Jay’s evolved into one of Dayton’s premier restaurants and an anchor in the Oregon Historic District.
The news that Mr. Haverstick was found dead Wednesday, May 20, in Death Valley National Park, where he was taking photographs, left the Miami Valley’s restaurant and wine community, and his many other friends and acquaintances, stunned.
“Jay was an important part of the fabric of the restaurant community in Dayton,” said David Hulme, owner of the Pine Club restaurant who has known Mr. Haverstick for four decades and attended Jay’s Restaurant’s opening night in 1976.
“He was a passionate guy — Jay was not one to hold back his opinion — and he was always an outspoken proponent for the community and for the restaurant owners,” Hulme said. “I was always impressed by his commitment to the community.”
Every holiday season for the last several years, Mr. Haverstick has opened the doors of his restaurant to the homeless or economically disadvantaged and serve a free dinner of fried chicken, ham, mashed potatos and green beans. A local church helped collect donated clothes and toys to be handed out at the dinner. Last Christmas, nearly 500 people attended, according to Jay’s Restaurant sommelier and long-time employee Joe Daniel.
Oakwood Club restaurant owner Lance Stewart said Mr. Haverstick was “someone we could all look up to as restaurateurs.”
Stewart recalled when his father died suddenly 18 years ago, he was thrust into the unfamiliar role of sole ownership of the Oakwood Club.
“Jay Haverstick was the first person to come to me and offer his help,” Stewart said. “I will always remember that.”
Josef Reif, owner of l’Auberge, said Mr. Haverstick, wife Idy and daughter Amy Haverstick came in for dinner at his Kettering restaurant last week, shortly after Mr. Haverstick’s 69th birthday on May 8. The longtime friends have cultivated a tradition of having dinner in each other’s restaurant around their birthdays, Reif said.
“He was proud of Dayton, and he loved Dayton,” Reif said. “He was always there, always helping his employees and friends. And he was always dedicated to his restaurant, seven days a week.
“We always chatted about wine and food, and he was passionate about both. It was a great friendship.”
Mr. Haverstick apparently was making new friends a week before he died. David Vasconez of Oakwood said on Wednesday that he sat in front of Mr. Haverstick on a Dayton-to-Chicago flight May 12 and listened to him talk about his excitement around his upcoming trip with an old college buddy. He said he introduced himself to Mr. Haverstick, and the two discussed the best way to cook swordfish.
After he read the stories on daytondailynews.com Wednesday about Mr. Haverstick first reported missing and later being found deceased, “I was floored. Vasconez said. “I just got chills.”
The restaurant was closed Wednesday but is expected to reopen at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Mr. Haverstick is survived by his wife Idy; brothers Ned and Kim, both of Dayton; daughter Amy Haverstick; and son Joseph and daughter-in-law Rebecca Haverstick of suburban Cleveland, and two grandchildren.
Funeral arrangement are pending.

Pacchia joins nation’s finest wine-tastings list, and is there really a ‘Sweaty Betty’ beer?
Pacchia joins the tidal wave that is the Dayton-area wine-tasting scene this weekend with a Sunday gig, Arrow Wine & Spirits Far Hills welcomes Warren County’s Valley Vineyards for its Saturday tasting, and Tina Nixon from Meranda-Nixon winery near Ripley, Ohio will be pouring Thursday of next week at Arrow Centerville (and her husband tonight at Little Sonoma). Those are just a few of the tasty nuggets you’ll glean as you feast your wine-savvy eyes on the best darn wine-tasting list in the land, which comes to Uncorked courtesy of the heroic efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it. Are we blessed or what?
One worthy event that didn’t make the list but which you need to know about: Mamma DiSalvo’s, 1375 E. Stroop Rd. in Kettering, will host a wine dinner on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 pm … Bobby from Mamma DiSalvo’s will be serving Osso Bucco, and wine importer-distributor extraoardinaire Ardie Bonnano will be pouring four Italian wines. Call the restaurant for more details, 937-299-5831.
And one other question: Is there really an “Old Fart” wine and a “Sweaty Betty” beer? The things you learn from this wine-tasting list …

A wine called ‘Dayton’ hits the shelves — in California
Check THIS out: There’s a wine called “Dayton” for sale in … suburban Los Angeles!
This little discovery comes courtesy of Joel Moss, Dayton native and contest-winner extraordinaire (not to mention the son of my colleague, Meredith Moss).
Do these people know they could make a killing if they released this wine right here in the Gem City?

Red wine patches? No thanks, I’ll take mine orally
A page from one of the advertising supplements that arrived in my Sunday newspaper caught my eye with this headline:
The Powerful Goodness of Red Wine is NOW IN A PATCH!
Each “Resveratrol Anti-Aging Red Wine Patch” is “Power_Packed with 120 mg of Resveratrol! JUST 1 PATCH = 400 BOTTLES OF WINE”
Here’s a link to the online version of the offer, which comes from a company called Dream Products Inc.
You’ve got to love the wording of the ad:
… laboratory and clinical studies have confirmed that all-natural RESVERATROL may actually slow down the aging process, protect your heart, prevent and fight diseases - even help you lose weight!
Now I guess I’m as guilty as the next wine writer who spotlights some of the medical studies that do indeed show promise for this substance found in the skins of certain grape varietals. But … a patch?
What’s next? A suppository?
If it’s all the same to you, I’ll continue to “get my resveratrol” by mouth, thank you … in increments a tad bit smaller than 400 bottles at a time. And I’ll find other ways to boost my health.

Even Champagne producers are going screwcap
Check out this story from The Independent about screwcap-like closures being test-marketed on bottles of Champagne.
Yes, Champagne.
Traditionalists and cork producers will find this a revoltin’ development, I suspect …

Spring brings hope, renewal, optimism — and wine tastings
A local restaurateur told me yesterday that his establishment had a much -needed boffo week last week, and he talked to a handful of fellow Dayton-area restaurant owners who reported the same experience. Was last week an anomaly, or have we turned the corner on the economic crisis? Do people feel safe again to spend money? Is it becoming okay again to splurge and feel good about it rather than guilty about it?
Hope so.
And speaking of not feeling guilty, there’s absolutely no reason to do so about enjoying the wine tastings (check out the all-pinot tasting at DLM Oakwood Saturday) and dinners that Uncorked brings you today and every Friday, courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles this list and sends it out to its members (sometimes even in the wee hours of the morning!). So feast your eyes, then slake your thirst — guilt-free.
And Happy Mother’s Day to all!

New wine bar and wine shop coming to Far Hills Avenue
A new wine bar and retail wine shop is coming to Washington Twp.
The shop is called Rumble Seat Wine, and it will open soon at 5853 Far Hills Ave. between Caribou Coffee and a Midas Muffler Shop in Washington Twp.
The wine bar and shop will be owned and operated by Thomas E. Smith of Washington Twp., who said the shop will have a wine-warehouse feel, with cases of wine stacked in the retail shop and and wines, beers and spirits available by the glass at the bar.
Matt Mullins, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control, said Smith has applied for an available full liquor license which is “in process” and pending approval and issuance. Smith said he is hoping to open Rumble Seat Wine as early as the end of May.
Smith said he has no previous restaurant or wine-shop experience, but described himself as a wine hobbyist who wants to turn his hobby into a business. He said he’ll offer more detailed plans for the shop in the coming weeks.

A group of British wine specialists who participated in a “Judgment in Paris”-like tasting of some of the world’s finest and well-known red wines — this time, up against a handful of premium reds from Chile, and only one from California — have restored a bit of Bordeaux luster, according to this Decanter.com story entitled ” ‘Surprise’ result for Margaux and Lafite against New World”.
The event was sponsored by a Chilean wine producer, so obviously the focus was on that country’s wines. But … Opus One as the only California entry? A wine that is more French in style than many French wines? That seems downright odd. Probably best to leave out California altogether than to include only one wine — and an atypical one at that — to represent the entire California wine industry.
Still, these tastings are fun little conversation-starters, are they not?

Wine shops delving into spirits tastings
Today is Cinco de Mayo, and Bella Vino Wine Merchants at 495 North Main Street in Springboro is hosting a tequila tasting to mark the occasion.
The tasting will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include samples of Jose Cuervo Traditional, Don Julio Blanco, Don Julio Anejo and finish with a refreshing Margarita. The cost is $15, and no reservations are necessary. For more information, call 937-748-3807.
Meanwhile, the Cork & Vine Wine Market and Lounge at 3452 York Commons Blvd. in the Miller Lane area will host a Grey Goose Martini Tasting this Friday May 8th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and its web site also mentions a special tasting tomorrow night, May 6, with guest Andy Dawson with Brokers Gin.
Soon, we’ll have to have three different weekly tastings lists: beer, wine, and spirits!

Moderate wine consumption adds five years to men’s life expectancy
The report first showed up in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health (abstract only — full report available by subscription only) last week and was reported today in Modern Medicine, and let’s just say, at least half of us will find the news rather encouraging: moderate consumption of wine is linked to a five-year bump in men’s life expectancy.
Researchers for the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in The Netherlands analyzed data from a cohort of 1,373 men born in the early 1900s who were examined periodically between 1960 and 2000. It appears as if moderate wine drinkers had lower death rates from heart and brain vascular diseases and a lower death rate overall.
Here’s a quote to ponder:
“Long-term wine consumers had about five years longer life expectancy at age 50 compared with no alcohol users. Of these five years, about two years can be attributed to an effect of alcohol intake and is in accordance with the inverse association between long-term alcohol intake and all-cause mortality found in the present study. The remaining three years can be attributed to an effect of wine consumption. However, given the wide confidence interval, the effect of wine as such may be overestimated,” the authors write.
The authors caution that more studies are needed. And it’s very clear that excessive wine consumption, like excessive consumption of other forms of alcohol, can greatly shorten life spans of men and women from a variety of causes, and can ruin lives of heavy drinkers and their families well before death.
But the drumbeat of studies suggesting potential health benefits of moderate wine consumption continues, at least as they pertain to the major killers such as heart disease. For wine enthusiasts, that’s good news.

New wine bar coming to The Greene
BEAVERCREEK — The Wine Loft wine bar is scheduled to open at The Greene in August, a spokesman for The Greene’s developer announced today, May 1.
The Wine Loft is a “full-service wine bar” that will offer 70 wines by the glass and 250 wines by the bottle along with a menu of light cuisine, according to Michael Duffey, spokesman for Steiner + Associates, the developer of The Greene.
The Wine Loft at The Greene is a franchise location of a Baton Rouge, La.-based chain of 20 wine bars around the country, including one that opened about six weeks ago in Dublin in suburban Columbus. It will be owned by Jeff and Jill Van Horne, who live in the Columbus area but are not affiliated with the Dublin franchise, Duffey said.
Jeff Van Horne, a 1986 graduate of Centerville High School, said in a phone interview that he recently returned to Ohio after a 16-year stint with Texas Instruments in the Dallas area. Van Horne said he is an avid wine collector and was looking to launch his own business when the Wine Loft opportunity arose. He said the Wine Loft’s concept is a good fit for The Greene, and he’d eventually like to expand to other locations in Ohio.
Click here for menu and employment information for The Wine Loft at The Greene.
The wine bar will feature “popular selections from the Napa Valley … along with a selection of eclectic wines intended to expand tasters’ horizons” in a “sexy and inviting” atmosphere that is “designed to encourage memorable social experiences,” according to a Steiner + Associates press release.
The 3,469-square-foot wine bar will hold 140 and will include a private mezzanine designed for parties, corporate events, and educational seminars for up to 35 people, Duffey said. It will be located at 21 Greene Blvd between The Pub and Noodles & Co., he said.
The wine bar will not be a retail wine shop, but will serve wine on-premise only.
Menu offerings include items such as a charcuterie board, cheese plates, corn and crab bisque, filet mignon salad, lamb Wellington and escargot.
