Ohio winery relieved after near-miss with tornado
I received the following email from Bill Skvarla at Harmony Hill Winery in Bethel, Ohio — a winery about 30 miles east of Cincinnati that we told you all about a couple of years ago :
Hello all. Patti and I are beginning to believe that there is never a dull moment on ‘The Hill’. For those of you who witnessed it, the core of that rotating cloud that we all stared into of as it passed over the winery was indeed a tornado. It touched down minutes later about 3/4 mile northeast of the farm in the baseball fields on Fossyl Drive. That’s as close to a tornado as I ever want to be. Thank you to all of those who helped usher our guests into the wine cave, and helped secure the winery furniture and umbrellas…….. ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW ON THE HILL!
Who knew that wine cave that Bill built would also double as a tornado shelter? Scary stuff …

For all of you who think owning a vineyard and winery is romantic… a few weeks prior to this rotating cloud, temperatures were dropping precipitously, and Bill was again in the vineyard burning hay bales at 3 a.m. to protect the wines from an incoming frost. It’s farming! It’s local! Support your local wineries; it’s a struggle and a joy.By lisa

While in the wine cave, I would have broke out the glasses or just passed the bottle around!
