Dayton-area wine shops pop their corks

Many fine wine events on tap for this weekend and beyond, and you can read about them here thanks to the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the region’s tastings and dinners into one glorious list. Check out the appearance tonight (Friday, June 26) by Charles and Molly Meeker at Taste of Wine in Miamisburg and David Winch’s unveiling of wines from Sun Wine Imports tomorrow afternoon (6-27) at Arrow Wine & Spirits Far Hills Avenue store.

Continuing evidence that it’s great to be a wine lover in Dayton, don’t you think?

Oakwood exec launches second career — in Italian wines

David Winch already has one career: he is part of the fifth generation of his family to operate The Minster Machine Co., which sells metal stamping presses from its Auglaize County headquarters.

Yet the 44-year-old Oakwood resident also has decided the wine business would be “a great business to be in.”

Now, it’s probably no coincidence that Winch reached that conclusion while he was sitting in a trattoria in Northern Italy having long, leisurely lunch and a glass of fine Barbaresco with an Italian friend with whom he had done business.

That friend suggested they form a partnership to import Italian wine into the United States. And from that lunch, Sun Wine Imports was born, with Winch and his wife Julie as co-owners. For Winch, the new venture is a win-win: It will give him a good excuse to get together and do business more often with two men he considers good friends — his business partners Mario Sangalli and Pietro Pellegrini — while also introducing Dayton-area wine enthusiasts to what Winch calls “small, high-quality, estate-grown wines and to the families that grow them.”

Winch said he first traveled to Italy when he was a student at the University of Dayton enrolled in a one-month study-abroad program in Rome. “That’s when I fell in love with the country,” he said. So much so that when he married Julie — whom he met at UD — the couple honeymooned in Italy. In recent years, he has sold some metal stamping presses to Italian companies, necessitating — of course — even more business trips there.

So far, the portfolio of the fledgling wine-importing company consists of a grand total of nine wines — mostly Prosecco and other sparklers, along with a Tuscan cabernet sauvignon and a Chianti — but the portfolio is expected to grow, starting with a Barbaresco (nebbiolo-based red wine grown in one of Italy’s most prestigious wine-producing regions) this fall.

Winch’s Italian partners are in town this week for a handful of events to officially launch Sun Wine Imports’ offerings. They’ll pour several of those wines from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, June 25) at the Cork & Vine Wine Market & Lounge on York Commons Blvd. near Miller Lane, and again from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store in Kettering, including the 2007 Alice Prosecco Extra Dry, 2007 Petrognano Bianco, 2003 Petrognano Vigna Santa Chianti Reserva, 2003 Petrognano Monte Vago and 2006 Petrognano Chianti.

Indy International Wine Competition announces medal-winners

The 2009 Indy International Wine Competition, which drew 3,000 entries and was held June 16-18 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, has announced the winners. Here’s an excerpt sent by the Indiana Wine Grape Council:

Rancho Zabaco Winery of Healdsburg, California was awarded the Wine of the Year award for its 2007 Reserve Zinfandel. White Wine of the Year honors went to Stone Hill Winery of Hermann, Missouri for their 2008 Vignoles. Barrel Oak Winery of Delaplane, Virginia won Red Wine of the Year for their 2008 Norton. Rosé Wine of the Year was awarded to Butler Winery of Bloomington, Indiana for their 2008 Chambourcin Rose.
The Sparkling Wine of the Year was awarded to Chateau Frank of New York for their 2002 Brut and Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery of Canada took the Dessert Wine of the Year honors for their 2007 Minus Nine Icewine.
Ertel Cellars of Batesville, Indiana won Fruit Wine of the Year for their Strawberry. The last two categories, Honey Wine of the Year and Honey Wine Blend of the Year were awarded to Winehaven Winery & Vineyard of Minnesota and to Oliver Winery of Bloomington, Indiana, respectively.
E&J Gallo Winery of Modesto, California was awarded the Winery of the Year Trophy, sponsored by the Leisure Family. The Pacesetter Trophy honors the Best International Brand of the entire competition. E&J Gallo Winery won two double gold, 17 gold, 38 silver and 32 bronze medals.
Huber Orchard & Winery of Starlight, Indiana won the Winemaker of the Year Trophy, honoring the winery that wins the most gold medals by brand at the competition.
The Indiana State Fair Wine Competition began in 1973 as an Indiana-only event. The competition began admitting entries from across the world in 1992 …

I am not as familiar with Indiana wines as I should be. Do any of my fellow Ohioans have any Indiana favorites?

And as for Gallo: They have always known how to make great zinfandel, haven’t they? I can recall enjoying their zins in the mid-1980s … great bargains.

Winery’s ‘dream job’ sends blogger over the rainbow

My Cincinnati-area friend and blogging colleague Michelle Lentz, who writes the My Wine Education blog, has entered the Murphy-Goode Winery “Really Goode Job” contest.

The winner of the contest will be paid a nifty $10,000 per month for six months to blog, Twitter, Facebook and use whatever other means that the technology and social-media gods can come up with to tell the world about Murphy-Goode and Sonoma Wine Country.

The contest was an utterly brilliant marketing move: the winery has reaped a ton of free publicity as reporters, columnists and wine bloggers weighed in about its significance. The application deadline is later this week. The top 50 candidates will be announced on June 26, and 10 finalists will begin interviews in mid-July.

Several wine bloggers have entered the contest (not me — I already have the perfect job, and why would anyone leave the paradise that is Dayton, Ohio for crummy ol’ California, anyway?), and they’re exhorting their readers for votes. MIchelle, however, was first and closest, so …

To view and to vote for Michelle’s Wizard of Oz-themed contest entry in which she goes “over the rainbow” for the really Goode job, click on this link.

I hope Michelle wins. Then, at the end of the stint, she can click together her ruby red slippers and repeat, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”

Wine (and beer) tastings as far as the eye can see

This wine tasting list that comes to Uncorked via the positively heroic efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv of sorts that compiles it just keeps getting more impressive. Really, who needs NCR?

Amelia’s Bistro in Bellbrook makes a debut this week with a wine dinner on Tuesday, June 16. And has anyone else noticed that this list also features some absolutely kick-ass beer tastings as well as wine events? We are indeed blessed.

Why would anyone want to leave Dayton?

Fleurs et Vin: your thoughts, our photos from Dayton’s wine-and-food festival

The first Fleurs et Vin food-and-wine festival — a successor event to the Fleurs de Fete — drew several hundred people yesterday (Sunday, June 7) in near-perfect weather at Dayton’s Carillon Park.

Click here to view a photo gallery of the festival. I recognize a few faces!

The attendance figures are not yet available, but the opening-bell line certainly seemed as long as usual, and the auction results seemed quite robust. Lisa Grigsby — special events manager for Culture Works, one of two non-profit organizations to benefit from this year’s Fleurs et Vin — said this morning that the silent auction generated more than $10,000, and the live auction $12,000 — believed to be record-breaking numbers.

The addition of the second tent and of more tables outside the tents seemed to spread out the crowd, which helped resolve some of the gridlock that can occur around the wine-tasting tables and the most popular restaurants. Savvy move.

My “research assistant” was called away at the last minute to visit my father-in-law in Columbus, so the customary rundown of the food served ain’t happenin’ this year. So I turn to you: What did you like? What tickled your palate, either on the food or the wine side?

My general impression is that the quality of the wine served this year was very strong — as good as if not better than any I can remember.

What did you think?

Wine festivals, tastings, dinners & more

One lingering look at this lovely list of wine tastings and dinners available below (or with a click on the “continue reading” link) will convince you: It’s not all about a single festival — even if the Fleurs et Vin is shaping up to be a good one..

This list comes to Uncorked courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it and emails it to subscribers every Thursday — although this week, I did add, wayyyy at the end, information regarding a wine dinner next week at El Meson featuring the Veleta wines of Dr. Juan Palomar. See you at Carillon on Sunday!

A change at the top — and in the glass — for sauvignon blanc

Decanter.com is reporting this morning that a New Zealand wine has dislodged venerable Kendall-Jackson as America’s top-selling brand of sauvignon blanc.

But I’ll tell you the wine that became MY favorite sauvignon blanc last weekend and again last night, and it too is from Down Under (Australia, not NZ): the Emeri Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc from Debortoli that costs $11.99 in Ohio.

Yes, a sparkling sauvignon blanc — the first such wine I’ve tried. It was the hit of last weekend’s Super Saturday wine tasting at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store, where it sold out halfway through the tasting. And its distributor’s rep, Mel Bonie, who poured samples of the wine last night at Bruning’s Wine Shop in Beavercreek, said the wine is available at several other local wine shops as well. It’s a perfect summer sparkler — fruity but with a dry, refreshing finish that begs the next sip. Great price, too.

Back to America’s favorite sauvignon blanc: Is anyone else surprised at both names at the top of that list? I wouldn’t have guessed K-J to be the dominant sauvignon blanc brand — perhaps it’s not here in the Dayton area — and I don’t recall seeing the Nobilo sauvignon blanc prominently displayed on local wine lists or shelves. Perhaps I haven’t been paying attention. I would have guessed perhaps Beringer or even Dry Creek.

Or maybe someday, Emeri.

Ohio winery relieved after near-miss with tornado

I received the following email from Bill Skvarla at Harmony Hill Winery in Bethel, Ohio — a winery about 30 miles east of Cincinnati that we told you all about a couple of years ago :

Hello all. Patti and I are beginning to believe that there is never a dull moment on ‘The Hill’. For those of you who witnessed it, the core of that rotating cloud that we all stared into of as it passed over the winery was indeed a tornado. It touched down minutes later about 3/4 mile northeast of the farm in the baseball fields on Fossyl Drive. That’s as close to a tornado as I ever want to be. Thank you to all of those who helped usher our guests into the wine cave, and helped secure the winery furniture and umbrellas…….. ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW ON THE HILL!

Who knew that wine cave that Bill built would also double as a tornado shelter? Scary stuff …

Troy wine bar closes

TROY — Cork-N-Vine, a wine bar and retail wine shop at 1737 W Main St. in Troy, has closed.

A deli affiliated with the wine shop, Dagwood’s Deli, 1741 W Main St., also closed.

The Troy Cork-N-Vine’s closing has no impact on the Cork & Vine Wine Market & Lounge at 3452 York Commons Blvd. near Miller Lane in northern Montgomery County, according to Shawn Grow, co-owner of the Butler Twp. business who was involved initially with the Troy wine bar.

Angela Crespo, who co-owned the two Troy businesses, said the closing had “a lot to do with the economy.” Of the wine bar, Crespo said, “I tried to hold onto it as long as I could … I love the area, love the people — our regulars were great.”

Crespo said she couldn’t comment in detail about the businesses because of legal issues, but she said there is a “possibility of Cork-N-Vine reopening sometime in the future.”

Ohio wineries soak up fame of governor’s proclamation

Allow me to pass along this news release from the Ohio Grape Industries Committee, chaired by the Ohio Department of Agriculture:

Governor Declares June Ohio Wine Month

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (June 1, 2009) - Governor Ted Strickland declared June “Ohio Wine Month” in honor of the state’s knowledgeable winemakers, fertile soils, and temperate growing climate that produces some of the best wines in the country. With an emphasis on excellence, Ohio grape growers work to harvest only the highest quality of wine grapes.
“Ohio’s wine industry is flourishing with an average of 1.5 new wineries opening their doors every month,” said Ohio Agriculture Director Robert Boggs. “Ohio Wine Month gives us an opportunity to celebrate our wine industry and highlight its contribution to the state’s agricultural success.”
The Ohio Grape Industries Committee, chaired by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, works to create viable, income-producing grape enterprises in the State of Ohio by providing marketing and promotion efforts to generate and expand new markets for grapes and grape products and research to improve the quality of grapes and profitability of grape growing as an agribusiness.
The Ohio Grape Industries Committee has planned several events throughout the month to offer Ohioans the opportunity to experience Ohio wines, including the following wine tastings:
Cotters Restaurant at the Arena June 4, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. 200 W. Nationwide Blvd., Columbus
Meza June 5, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. 48 N. State St., Westerville
Bexley Monk June 18, 6 - 8 p.m. 2232 E. Main St., Bexley
Cotters Restaurant at the Arena June 25, 6 - 8 p.m. 200 W. Nationwide Blvd., Columbus
