Wedding bells signal wine mega-merger

As wine-related mergers go, this one’s a doozie: Gina Gallo, granddaughter of Julio Gallo and head winemaker for the giant family-owned wine producer, married Jean-Charles Boisset, who oversees the American operations of the third-largest wine producer in France, Boisset Family Estates, according to this story from Wine Enthusiast magazine’s web site and this Decanter.com story.

Who gets to choose the wine for dinner?

Giorgio Rivetti’s La Spinetta wines are riveting, but don’t call him a winemaker

Rivetti1.JPG
GIORGIO RIVETTI

Giorgio Rivetti just isn’t very comfortable with one of his job titles — winemaker for the La Spinetta winery that he co-owns in Italy — and he’s not a bit shy about telling the world why.

“Don’t call me a winemaker,” Rivetti said during his promotional swing through the Dayton area last week. “I’m very happy if you don’t feel my hand in the wine.”

Well, somebody’s hands are doing something right, either in the vineyards or in the cellar.

Rivetti votes vineyard: “90 percent of a great wine is made in the vineyard.”

Rivetti has turned La Spinetta into a force in Italy. Not only does he make an excellent Moscato d’Asti that has been widely available in southwest Ohio for several years — the Bricco Quaglia is said to be the first single-vineyard Moscato in Italy — his stable of Piedmont reds, including single-vineyard Barbarescos, Barolo, Barberas, Dolcettos and Langhe Nebbiolo, is impressive across the board. And now, Rivetti has purchased 75 acres in Tuscany, where he is producing single-vineyard Sangiovese-based wines.

In total, La Spinetta owns about 165 acres, and purchases no grapes from outside sources.

Here’s a sampling of Rivetti’s strong opinions on everything from irrigation to the planting of Bordeaux varietals to some of Italy’s best vineyards:

— “Our job is to make great wine from Italian grapes … It is important to make a great Brunello and a great Chianti in Tuscany, not a great Cabernet,” Rivetti said. The experimentation that is going on in many Tuscan vineyards with cabernet suvignon, merlot, syrah and other varietals more strongly associated with France would never fly in Piedmont, where dolcetto, barbera and the majestic nebbiolo are grown. “I advised a fellow winemaker not to buy a vineyard in Barolo and plant cabernet in it, because they can kill you.” Yes, he was laughing when he said it, but not too hard.

— “Irrigation brings uniformity,” Rivetti said, noting that irrigating vineyards is prohibited in Piedmont but allowed in Tuscany. “There is no difference in vintages.”

— “I decide when to harvest based on what the grapes taste like,” not based on the sugar readings from measuring devices, Rivetti said.

— Nebbiolo is the world’s most versatile varietal and makes some of the world’s best wines, but Rivetti is wary when he sees inky versions of the wine that is traditionally light in color. “If you have a real dark-colored Barolo, it’s not 100 percent Nebbiolo,” he said.

— Although he uses new oak barrels to age many of his finest wines, Rivetti nevertheless considers himself a traditionalist because of his belief that great wines are made first and foremost in the vineyard, and said, “We don’t make wine for tasting, we make wine for food.”

Look for La Spinetta’s 2008 Moscato d’Asti ($17.99) and serve it as either an aperitif or as a dessert wine. With its slight sweetness, low 5.5 percent alcohol and moderate effervescence, this is a perfect wine to serve to someone who swears he or she doesn’t like wine because it’s “too sour.” For red-wine lovers, look for the 2005 Barbera d’Alba Gallina ($39.99).

Rivetti’s new Tuscan entries, the Sassontino 2004 and Sezzana 2004 (both $39.99), state a strong case for Sangiovese. Among La Spinetta’s flagship nebbiolo-based wines, splurge on the 2004 Barbaresco Vigneto Valierano ($89.99, on sale from $114.99), the 2004 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi (also on sale for $89.99) and the 2003 Barolo Vigneto Campe ($99.99, originally $129.99).

These are wines that Rivetti might even admit he “made.”

Wine Loft opening may trigger protest

The recent closing of the Wine Loft wine bar and restaurant in Dublin in suburban Columbus will not affect the opening of the Wine Loft at The Greene, according to a spokesman for The Wine Loft and the franchise owner of the Beavercreek wine bar. But former employees of a Wine Loft that closed last month in suburban Columbus are organizing a protest to coincide with the opening.

Jeff Van Horne, who with his wife Jill owns the franchise of The Greene’s Wine Loft, said the wine bar-restaurant is scheduled to open on Wednesday, Oct. 7, with grand opening events three to four weeks later. Van Horne was not the franchise owner of the Dublin Wine Loft, and he said the closing of that wine bar “will not have any impact on our business at The Greene whatsoever.”

Tim Sabo — marketing director for the Louisiana-based chain that has 20 wine bars nationwide — said the Dublin location closed about three weeks ago. The parent corporation took over ownership of the wine bar from a franchise owner two months ago “to try to save it” but wasn’t able to, Sabo said.

“The business traffic was not up to the expectations for such a large location,” Sabo said.

The retail area surrounding the Dublin location has struggled, according to this Columbus Business First story from May.

Vincent Ruffo, the former acting general manager for the Dublin Wine Loft, said he and other employees are still owed wages for the final two weeks of their employment, and they are organizing a demonstration at or near the new Wine Loft at The Greene to coincide with its opening to call attention to their situation.

Sabo said there are hard feelings every time a business closes, and his company is working to resolve any outstanding issues.

Wine: Here’s what we’re tasting in Dayton, Ohio

Where can you find the bestest list of wine tastings, dinners and special events in all of cyberspace, revealing for the world to see what we are enjoying here in America’s heartland of Dayton, Ohio?

Right here on Uncorked, naturally.

How much does the Uncorked author have to do with the compilation of said list?

Nada.

A Dayton-based wine listserv does all the dirty, grimy work of assembling this thing of beauty, and all we do is bask in its glow. Well, that, and use the list to plan our week.

I love America. And Dayton, Ohio. (Click on “continue reading” if the wine tastings list does not appear directly below …)

Famous beermaker celebrates 250th birthday today

Guess who turns 250 today? Yes, two-hundred-and-fifty?

It’s Guinness, the Dublin-based brewery known for its dark, robust brews. More details available at this piece from discoverireland.com.

Plans call for a “global toast.” Will you raise a glass?

Corks & Forks, Arrow Octoberfest & ‘Super Saturday’ highlight weekend wine tastings

That tiny nip in the air just seems to make wine taste a little better, doesn’t it? You can test that hypothesis at any one of the following wine tastings and dinners, the list for which is compiled by a Dayton-based listserv and shared with Uncorked and thus, the world. Lots of fun stuff in store, including a first-ever Corks & Forks event Sunday up near Cork & Vine adjacent to MIller Lane, a big Octoberfest event at the Arrow in Centerville tonight (Sept. 18), a first wine-and-food event at Kroger in Kettering also tonight, and a “Super Saturday” tasting at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store tomorrow (Sept. 19).

Here’s the info on the “Corks & Forks”:

Corks & Forks — a food, wine and beer festival benefitting four Dayton-area non-profit organizations — will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the corner of North Dixie Highway and York Commons Boulevard just off Miller Lane. Attendees can sample from 100 wines and from beers from a Belgian Beer Cafe, and food from 15 Miami Valley restaurants. The event also will feature a silent auction and live auction. Proceeds benefit Miami Valley Grown, the Blake LaForce Fund, the Wahid Abdullah Memorial Fund and Reach Out Montgomery County. Tickets are $45 in advance, $55 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.corksandforks.org or at the Cork & Vine Wine Market & Lounge, 3452 York Commons Blvd. For more information, call Lisa Grigsby at (937) 572-1376 or Shawn Grow at (937) 603-3263.

New wine bar at The Greene to open this month

The new wine bar coming to The Greene that we told you about back in May has revised its opening date and is scheduled to open within a month.

The Wine Loft is now scheduled for a “soft opening” the last week of September, with grand opening festivities about three weeks later, according to Jeff Van Horne, who will own and operate the wine bar along with his wife Jill.

Van Horne, you may recall, is a 1986 graduate of Centerville High School who recently returned to Ohio after a 16-year stint with Texas Instruments in the Dallas area. He said back in May that he is an avid wine collector and was looking to launch his own business when the Wine Loft opportunity arose.

In an interview late last week, Van Horne said he hopes to open relatively quietly, with no advertising, and use the first few weeks to fine-tune service. The Wine Loft will be a full-service wine bar that will offer as many as 70 wines by the glass and up to 250 wines by the bottle along with a menu of light cuisine. Click here to view a sample Wine Loft menu from its web site.

The wine bar will be located at 21 Greene Boulevard, will be managed by Eric Ball, and its phone number is (937) 429-4424, according to the Wine Loft at The Greene’s web site.

The only heavy lifting this Labor Day weekend should be a glass of wine

Why exert yourself? It’s Labor Day weekend. The only exercise you should get is lifting a glass with just a smidge of fermented grape juice in it to your lips. The number of repetitions is up to you, although I advise moderation, or else you might pull a muscle. If you need to warm up with a few calisthenics first, try swirling the glass before lifting it. And don’t forget the cool-down period.

Thanks go out to the Dayton-based listserv that compiles this wine tastings and events list, which is, truly, Labor.

Enjoy!

Wines to pair with … potato chips?

I love this idea: tasting through an array of wines to see which ones pair best with different flavors of potato chips. Yes, potato chips, from salt & pepper to “Buffalo Bleu.” That’s what the Dallas Morning News did in this piece entitled “9 terrific wines under $15 that go great with chips”

I’m partial to BBQ chips. What do you think? I’m thinking a rich, smoky pinot noir, or perhaps a northern Rhone-style syrah …

Thanks to Cathy for passing along this little gem …
