Celebrating Memorial Day weekend with wine events, winery visits
If you’ve been curious about Barolo and the nebbiolo grape that reaches its absolute peak of perfection in that region of Italy, it looks like Jay’s Kitchen Door is the place you’ll want to be tonight, May 28. Three Barolos are on the tasting list tonight at Jay’s, and one other one on Saturday. And this weekend is your chance to taste the new-release whites at Kinkead Ridge and your only chance to visit the winery this summer. Also, the 2009 Rose wines are beckoning. Those are just three highlights nestled in this Miami Valley wine tastings and events list that comes to Uncorked via the selfless, public-service efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the list and shared it with its subscribers.
In addition, Nancy Bentley from Kinkead Ridge reminds us that in addition to her winery in Ripley being open this Memorial Day weekend (May 29 and May 31 — it’s closed Sunday) for the release of the 2009 Kinkead Ridge Viognier/Roussanne and 2009 River Village Cellars White Wine, the Harmony Hill winery will also open for the season those days, with a full release of 2009 wines and entertainment. See www.KinkeadRidgeWinery.com and www.hhwines.com for details. And she reminds us that Meranda-Nixon winery is also open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and invites you to see their web site for details (www.meranda-nixonwinery.com).
And as the list itself mentions, the La Vigna Estate Winery in Georgetown, Ohio (www.lavignaestatewinery.com) also is open on Saturday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend.
So have a VERY enjoyable weekend. Click on “continue reading” if the full list doesn’t appear immediately below, and cheers!

DLM wants to find, prosecute thieves who stole high-end Champagne
Thieves with a rather refined taste in wine have struck multiple Dorothy Lane Market stores, stealing what may turn out to be thousands of dollars worth of Champagne.
The wines missing or known to have been stolen include some of the most expensive Champagnes produced, including Krug ($401 a bottle), Perrier-Jouet ($350), Cristal ($345) and Dom Perignon ($150), according to DLM store manager Cory Kuntz and wine director Todd Templin.
The most recent thefts occurred March 9 at two of DLM’s three stores: the Washington Square store in Washington Twp. and the Springboro store on Ohio 741. DLM security cameras caught one white male suspect walking out of the Springboro store on March 9 with his jacket tossed over a hand basket that contained several bottles of Champagne that he didn’t pay for, Kuntz said.

Security cameras also snapped frames of a white female believed to have been an accomplice in the March 9 thefts and in at least one similar attempted theft in February with a different male partner, the DLM store manager said. That attempt was thwarted by a DLM employee who confronted the woman as she was exiting the store with three bottles of high-end Champagne.
After the March 9 thefts, DLM wine department employees took inventory and discovered several more bottles of high-end sparklers missing from the Washington Square and Springboro stores. Kuntz said an exact number of missing Champagnes and a precise cost estimate of the stolen bottles are not available, but the dollar loss will be at least $1,700. “That’s a very conservative estimate,” Kuntz said
Such thefts, while unusual in the scope and cost, are an industry-wide problem, according to other sellers of wine and spirits. Mif Frank, co-owner of Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store in Kettering, keeps certain brands of trendy liquors, such as Grey Goose Vodka and select Cognacs, behind the counter or in locked cabinets to avoid theft, and the Kroger Fresh Fare store on East Stroop Road in Kettering keeps its expensive wines in a special wine room that is locked during the hours that the wine department is not staffed, said Dean Breeding, who oversees the store’s wine and beer department.
Kuntz said DLM has taken steps to prevent future thefts, including adding additional surveillance, securing the stores’ fine-wine rooms and moving some expensive bottles from open shelves to locked locations.
“These are just a few of the steps we’ve taken, but they are the ones we feel comfortable sharing,” he said.
Calvin Mayne, whose family owns Dorothy Lane Market, said DLM is “aggressively pursuing the prosecution of those who committed these thefts.” Mayne added that DLM’s commitment to selling fine Champagne “is as strong as ever … we are not going to permit a small criminal element to prevent us from doing that.”
If you have information about the suspects or the wine thefts, call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Washington Twp. substation at (937) 433-0152.

Fleurs et Vin hits another one out of the (Carillon) Park
(For a photo gallery of shots taken at the Fleurs et Vin by Dayton Daily News photographer Teesha McClam, click here. There’s some good stuff here!)
Basking in the glow of some lovely spring weather — or was it early summer? — the Fleurs et Vin served up another fine Sunday afternoon of wine tasting and food sampling on Sunday, May 23.
The weather helped attract a strong crowd of 1,270 people — that’s a preliminary estimate that may go up — who chose from among 300-plus wines to taste and from the food samples of more than 20 Dayton-area restaurants and caterers.
Please do let us know what you thought of the event by posting a comment. As usual, I’ll jump in first:
The wines were a notch above many previous Fleurs et Vin/Fleurs de Fete events. I was surprised to see wines such as Clarendon Hilols 2004 Grenache and Louis Martini’s flagship wine, the 2005 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon, being poured virtually side-by-side. Both bottles retail in the $75 range, according to the person pouring the wines. I’ve had previous vintages of the Clarendon Hills, and it’s one of Australia’s finest — the ‘04 was a monster, too.
Other highlights: a Domaine de Pellehaut Vin de Pays des Cotes du Gascogne white blend that was full of flavor, a fine summertime white for the bargain price of $9.99. Two 2008 German rieslings — Trullo and Dr. Loosen Riesling — struck just the right balance of fruit and acidity for the first steamy day of the year. And a Gramona Gessari white blend of Gewurtztraminer and two types of Muscat was a mouthful of exotic fruit that started sweet and finished dry. Wonderful stuff for $18.
In recent years, this event has become just as much a food event as it is about the wine, and this year was no exception. Carver’s delivered with its signature Fleurs dish of beef tenderloin tips with a creamy whiskey-peppercorn sauce, and will offer $10 off an entree for those presenting a Fleurs et Vin ticket stub. The Oakwood Club’s grilled salmon was spot-on, and Jay’s Restaurant’s oyster shooters were a crowd favorite. The Little Store offered rare beef on a slice of baguette with a creamy horseradish sauce and a dollop of orzo. L’Auberge offered a refreshing seafood dish of calamari, bay scallops and langostinos, I believe, and it was served cold — perfect for the weather. And Thai 9 offered a fine minced chicken with cilantro and a spring roll. I missed many others (a little help from other attendees, perhaps?)
It was tight at times, but the addition of the second tent is a godsend for this event, and the crowd seemed to disperse to the outdoor tables and silent auction areas more quickly, which made it easier to get around. Organizers split up some of the most popular food destinations that ring the outside of the huge tent, which helped with traffic flow.
The live auction was lively: a chef’s dinner for eight at Rue Dumaine with wine provided by Heidelberg Distributing sold after spirited bidding for $2,000. And bidding on a Hide-a-Bar cabinet from Bruning’s Clock & Home Accent Store & Bruning’s Wine Cellar reached $3,700.
Nitpicks: Many red wines were served several degrees too warm, although some pourers were wisely chilling some of their reds briefly in ice. As the event was winding down, well-chilled bottles of water were scarce, and later the bottled water disappeared from some stations entirely. That’s just when it’s needed and desired most.
But all in all, this was, once again, a well-run, well-attended, thoroughly enjoyable event. With an admission cost of $60, given the wine selection and the food served, the Fleurs et Vin is a relative bargain. And it benefits two local charities: Culture Works and the AIDS Resource Center of Ohio.
I’m already looking forward to next year.
But that’s just me. What did you think of the Fleurs et Vin?

Fleurs et Vin forecast, wine dinner menu make this tastings list sparkle
As of this writing — the alarmingly early-morning hours of Friday, May 21 — here’s what the National Weather Service forecasts about the Dayton-area weather for Sunday, May 23, better known as “Fleurs et Vin” day:
“Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. South wind between 3 and 7 mph.”
Just sayin’ …
This list of wine tastings, dinners, festivals and other events — which comes to Uncorked via the nothing-less-than-heroic efforts of a Dayton-based wine listserv — is chock-full of fun things to do, but what the heck, why not pile on a few more? The Melting Pot in Washington Twp. will host a Joel Gott California Wine Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday that pairs four courses with Joel Gott wines, including a dessert pairing of Dark Chocolate Turtle Fondue with 2007 Joel Gott Zinfandel (cost is $50, call 937-567-8888), while on the same night, at 6:30 p.m., Michael Anthony’s at The Inn in Versailles will host a Mercer Estates Winemaker’s Dinner featuring Mercer’s winemaker, David Forsyth. The dinner is $65, which includes tax and tip (reservations 937-526-3020), but hey, it’s the menu that will catch your eye. I’ll let the folks at Michael’s tell it to you:
1st course: Riesling, Yakima Valley 2008
Pan seared George’s Bank Jumbo scallops, Asian style, with sauteed Vegetable Spaghetti
2nd: Pinot Gris, Columbia Valley 2007

Everything you need to know about the Fleurs et Vin
DAYTON — This year’s Fleurs et Vin — a successor of sorts to the event formerly known as the Fleurs de Fete — will be held this Sunday, May 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Carillon Historic Park.
The event — which over two decades has grown into the region’s best-attended wine-and-food event — gives attendees the opportunity to sample from more than 300 wines and from food provided by 22 Dayton-area restaurants and caterers. Beer samples are available in a beer garden, and there will be live and silent wine auctions, as well as live music by JT Fedrick/Sax Groove. The wine and food samples are included in the ticket price.
The Fleurs et Vin will be held rain or shine, and attendees must be 21. Tickets are $60 in advance, $70 at the gate, and are available at local wine merchants and at www.fleursetvin.com. This year’s event benefits two charities: Culture Works and the AIDS Resource Center of Ohio.
Dipping into the archives a bit, here are some of savvy survival tips to help maximize enjoyment of the Fleurs et Vin:
— Arrive early. There’s a long line by 1 p.m., and they can’t start the tasting before that time.
— Go slow on the wine consumption — this is a marathon, not a sprint — and if you don’t like a wine, or just want a small sip, use the dump buckets to pour out the wine in your glass and move on. Dumping is not considered rude.
— When you’re poured a sample of wine — and there’s a line of folks with empty glasses behind you — for crying out loud, step out of the way!
— Even if you don’t intend to buy, stay the final hour for the live auction. It can feature some rather entertaining bidding wars. And you can use the rest.
— Leave the stilettos for another occasion when you’re not tromping around in wet grass. And while we’re giving fashion advice, don’t wear white. Doesn’t go well with red wines.
— And the most important survival tip: water is your friend. Bottled water will be available at no extra charge. Drink lots of it.
How to Go:

After maiden voyage, the ‘Dayton Wine Trail’ undergoes some changes
Changes are a’comin’ for the Dayton Wine Trail that we told you about back in March and which launched its “bus tour” of three wine shops’ Saturday tastings in April.
The wine bus rolls again this Saturday, May 15 — for those who have boarding passes.
“This time we’re selling tickets for $35, which will cover the cost of the flight of tastings at each shop (still Bruning’s, Bella Vino and Culinary Company), and we’re going to have a set schedule of bus departure times — two starting times per location and a set departure time for each group from each stop — this go-round,” Dan Craven of Bruning’s Wine Cellar said in an email. “Tickets are available now and can be purchased at any one of the three shops.”
Craven said the changes will “hopefully smooth out the experience for everybody.”
John C. Feltz of Bella Vino said the $35 tickets will allow riders to pay once and then not have to worry about separate checks at each location.
“We had bottlenecks with people paying for their bills that delayed the bus a couple of times,” Feltz said. “Almost everybody did a full taste at each location, so we’re just going to formalize that and run forward with it.”

Greg Brewer from Melville/Brewer-Clifton coming to DLM, among week’s tasting highlights
A few special treats are nestled snugly inside the following list of Dayton-area wine tastings, dinners and special events that comes to Uncorked courtesy of the tireless efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it. VERY special treats.
First up, Arrow Wine & Spirits “Super Saturday” tasting at the Far Hills Avenue store tomorrow (May 8). On Tuesday night, do not even THINK of missing the appearance of Greg Brewer of Melville and Brewer-Clifton fame at Dorothy Lane Market’s Springboro store. Brewer was one of the winemakers I visited back in 2003. He and his wines are worth a special trip, whether it’s to Santa Barbara or, in this case, to Springboro.
Then on Thursday, May 13, check out the menu and wines at the “Wine Country Dinner” at McCormick & Schmick’s seafood restaurant at The Greene in Beavercreek. And don’t forget about the Fleurs et Vin on Sunday, May 23.
Do we live in the midst of a vibrant, robust wine community or what? Details on all of the above events, and so much more, are yours below, or by clicking on the ‘continue reading’ link. Cheers!
Check the Fleurs et Vin Sunday, May 23, 2010 1:00pm - 4:00pm at the bottom of the list!

Wine glasses: size and shape really do matter, but how much?
GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio — It’s been 10 years since I last fell victim to the Riedel magic spell. Alas, it happened again.
Last time, the venue was the now-defunct Fairfield Wine shop in Beavercreek, where a representative of Riedel (rhymes with “needle) led a demonstration designed to show how the company’s wine glasses outperform lesser (and cheaper) wine glasses by accentuating aromas and flavors in wine.
This time, the venue was a wine-marketing conference east of Cleveland, put together by the statewide wine-promoting associations from Ohio and five other states. And the guy leading this demo just happened to be Georg Riedel himself, the 11th generation of his family to operate the European glass manufacturer that traces its roots to 1756.
The man can command a room.
He can also make logic stand on its head — at least if logic tells you, as it did me, that an identical liquid sitting in two different containers is going to taste and smell, well, identical.
But pouring different varieties of wine back and forth among six different-shaped “glasses” — one was a plastic cup — Riedel showed that size and shape really DO matter.
An Ohio riesling from Chalet Debonne sniffed from one glass reveals aromas of peaches and apricots. From another glass, those same aromas are muted to the point they nearly disappear.
His company’s glasses, Riedel said, are capable of “capturing the DNA of the grape varietal” that they’re designed for. “I know it’s a pretentious statement,” he adds.
The 140 attendees were impressed: Riedel’s observations were met with a steady stream of “oohs” and “ahhs” and murmured agreement.
Joe Schuchter, marketing and sales director for Valley Vineyards in Warren County, said he was expecting the glass demo to be a glorified sales meeting. But he came away a believer. (Riedel chose one of Schuchter’s wines, the 2008 Valley Vineyards Cabernet Franc, as one of four wines used for the glass demonstration, and he praised it highly, as he also did for the Debonne riesling.)
“The glasses really did make a difference,” Schuchter said. “And I didn’t expect that.”
I’m still skeptical about how much of the difference that I’m detecting in my wine glass is the result of the power of suggestion — Riedel very clearly leads the demonstration and is quick to guide us in what we are and are not smelling and tasting — and how much is real. Those differences that are so pronounced at the Riedel-led demo seem less profound when these tests are re-created at home. And there’s no doubt that having a slightly different glass for virtually every major grape varietal is a bit of overkill.
But it’s also clear that there IS something to all of this. There is no denying the quality of these glasses, or their ability to accentuate certain characteristics of wines based on their size and shape.
Maybe it is science, and not magic. But I’m still looking for Georg’s magic wand.

Winemaker Randall Grahm wins James Beard book award
Bonny Doon Vineyard’s Randall Grahm has won the 2010 James Beard Foundation Award in the Beverage/Book category for his very first book, entitled Been Doon So Long: A Randall Grahm Vinthology, according to an email news release sent out by the Beard award folks Sunday night, May 2.
Treat yourself to some samples of Grahm’s rather, um, distinctive writing style by clicking on that book link. He is, quiet simply, a wickedly entertaining writer. And he’s got a way with words.
I visited Bonny Doon a few years back and tagged along as Grahm held court with another writer at a local Thai restaurant. So when I noticed back in March that Grahm had been named one of three finalists in this Beard category , I sent him a message on Twitter congratulating him.
In his Twitter reply, Grahm promised that if he won, his acceptance speech would be “short and tweet.”
THAT’s Randall Grahm. Although I doubt the “short” part.
