This flu shot comes with a wine chaser
My Dayton Daily News colleague Jill Kelley has written the following news brief, which I find simply, well … brilliant. See if you agree:
WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County — Brighton Gardens Senior Living, 6800 Paragon Road, is offering a flu shot special.
From 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, the assisted living community is offering wine and cheese with every flu shot. The cost is $24.
The event is open to the public, and is a collaborative effort between Brighton Gardens Senior Living and Gem City Home Care. No appointment is necessary.
For more information, call Brighton Gardens at (937) 438-0054.
Did I not say this is brilliant?

A mid-week wine tastings list to revel in
Once again, there’s just so much going on in the Dayton area’s wine world, that one tastings and events list won’t hold it all. I’m tardy in getting this list — which comes to Uncorked via the tireless efforts of a Dayton-based wine listserv — posted on Uncorked, which means a couple of the fine events occurred last night (Tuesday, Sept. 28). But there’s still plenty here to beckon us to enjoy a mid-week wine event …

Alsatian wine dinner, LobsterFest, Veleta tasting highlight wine-events list
This list just keeps getting better and better every week. I kid you not. Check out the Alsatian wine dinner at Rue Dumaine next Thursday, Sept. 30 (check out the menu), the Jay’s LobsterFest tomorrow Sept. 25 (ditto) and the Veleta wine tasting at the south Arrow store tomorrow (Sept. 25). And that’s just for starters. We are fortunate. We are blessed. We bask in the glow. And we thank the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the list and the wine shops and restaurants that provide the glow. Go forth and enjoy!

A wine importer who specializes in finding hidden gems
Don’t suggest to Robert Kacher of Robert Kacher Selections that the lousy economy has ushered in an equally lousy wine market.
“The market’s good,” Kacher said last week during a visit to Columbus. “We’ve found that we just have to work a little harder.
“If we sit and wait for people to come to us to buy our wine, we’re in trouble.”
Kacher isn’t sitting OR waiting. His visit to The Refectory restaurant in Columbus last week was an opportunity for Kacher — just about everybody calls him “Bobby” — to show off his portfolio of imported wines to the retail wine shop owners, restaurant owners, and grocery store wine buyers from throughout Ohio who are among his customers. Supported by his Ohio distributors Wine Trends and Cutting Edge Selections, Kacher spent three hours talking up and providing tastes of his portfolio, with obvious enthusiasm.
Kacher’s wines range from under-$10 Southern French whites, roses and reds, to wines from some of the most impressive zip codes in France’s Burgundy and Rhone regions. But for my money, his wines are most impressive in the less-expensive price points. The man can spot hidden gems, and he can deliver them to the wine market at very reasonable prices. His name on the back of a bottle of wine under $25 is a virtual guarantee of a very attractive quality-to-price ratio.
Highlights of the tasting included:
WHITES
— Domaine de Pouy 2009, $8.99: This may be Bobby’s greatest find. Year after year, this blend of Ugni blanc and Columbard is a crowd-pleaser, with its touch of sweetness balanced by fine acidity. The ‘09 doesn’t miss a beat.
— Mas Carlot Marsanne-Roussane 2008, $10.99: A fifty-fifty blend, plenty of fruit, decent acidity and a fine price.
— La Hitaire Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon 2009, $12.99: Grapefruit and rose petals, with just a touch of the New Zealand style.
— Domaine des Corbillieres Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, $15.99: Strikes just the right balance between the herbal, steely European style and the grapefruity NZ style, with plenty of zingy flavor.
REDS
— Grand Cassagne Grenache-Syrah 2008, $11.99: This 60-40 blend is soft, friendly and appealing, a good candidate for the Thanksgiving table.
— Mas de Guiot Grenach/Syrah Vin de Pays du Gard, $12.99: Good concentration of fruit and flavor at this price range, this would make for a fine “house red.”
— Mas Carlot Mourvedre-Syrah Les Enfants Terrible 2008, $12.99: Rich and earthy, with a hint of mushrooms in the nose from the mourvedre. This could pass as a Bandol wine at three times the price.
— Brunel Cotes du Rhone 2006/2007, $13.99/$14.99: Solid, well-made Rhone blends, with the ‘06 showing a bit more spice than the deep and fruity ‘07.
— Font du Vent Cotes du Rhone “Notre Passion” 2007, $17.99: This blend of equal parts grenache and syrah is even richer and full-bodied than the producer’s very good “Les Promesses” grenache-dominated bottling.
— Mas de Guiot Cabernet/Syrah “Prestige,” $18.99: You’ll know you’re drinking a French red, as this wine boasts just a touch of earthiness that adds complexity to the finest French wines, and it also has a solid core of fruit and a long finish.

Heidelberg Distributing announces a promotion
I received a news release from beer-and-wine wholesaler Heidelberg Distributing Company that I think is worth sharing, in part because those of us who have a few rings around our trunks know Mike Monnin from various wine events around town, or through his work many years back in wine retail at the Village Cellars (I believe) in Lebanon. Here’s the news as written by the Heidelberg folks:
Mike Monnin named General Manager at Heidelberg Kentucky
COVINGTON, KENTUCKY - Mike Monnin, a 30-year Associate of the Heidelberg Family of Companies, has been named General Manager at Heidelberg’s Covington, Kentucky location.Monnin has served in a variety of sales and management positions at the firm, including sales manager at Ohio Valley Wine & Beer Company, corporate on-premise chain account manager and corporate wine educator.
Monnin is a Certified Specialist of Wine, a title received after passing a stringent exam from the Society of Wine Educators. A graduate of the University of Dayton, Monnin lives in Lebanon with his wife Carol. They are the parents of three grown children.
Heidelberg’s Kentucky operation delivers beer, wine and other beverages to over 2,000 retailers in 33 counties. The office and warehouse facility is located on West 13th Street in Covington.Tweet

Kroger’s first ‘Reserve Room Tasting,’ Arrow ‘Super Saturday’ highlight fine tasting list
Yet another spectacular wine-tastings list beckons in this fine fall weekend, and you can read every delicious detail right here thanks to the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles the list and shares it with its members and with Uncorked.
You may want to clone yourself on Saturday, when the Kroger Fresh Fare store at Stroop and Shroyer in Kettering hosts its first-ever “Reserve Room Tasting” from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the nearby Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills store, also in Kettering, hosts its “Super Saturday” tasting from noon to 5 p.m. Kroger will pour reserve-room wines from producers such as Far Niente, Fess Parker and Conn Creek for $4 per 2-ounce sample, or all four wines for $15. Arrow is promising 20-plus wines from producers such as Caymus and M. Chapoutier to choose from, with sample prices varying based on the cost of the bottle.
Alas, I’ll miss both events, so let me know what your favorites were. And click on “continue reading” to peruse the full wine-tastings list if it doesn’t appear immediately below. Cheers!

Are local wine shops gouging their customers?
I received an email last week from someone who is connected with the local wine industry who suggested that maybe, just maybe, local wine shops are gouging those of us who stop in for their weekly or daily wine tastings.
The email’s author had recently made the rounds of the local wine tastings, and the prices that were charged for wine samples astonished him.
“I don’t what formula (they use) for arriving at their fees, but I just don’t get paying the equivalent of two or three times the price of a bottle for a sample,” the email said. “It’s not like they had to pay more from the distributor for it!”
The commenter acknowledged that customers pay for the atmosphere and the ambiance of their favorite wine-tasting spot, and said he found “some really cool little places around Dayton to explore the world of wine.” But he thinks some wine destinations are flat-out gouging their customers when pricing their wine samples.
I must admit, I don’t ever think about trying to calculate how much I’m paying for a sample and comparing it to the retail bottle cost. I’m usually just happy to be able to taste a wine that otherwise wouldn’t cross my lips. But I’m a wine geek.
What do you think? Do you feel gouged at local wine tastings?

A midweek wine-tastings list to celebrate all that is good about September
I’m late in getting this list posted, so some of the events listed here — the Wednesday tastings — are, sadly, a thing of the past. My apologies. But Thursday’s another matter. Check out the sparkling wine tasting at The Wine Loft from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight (Sept. 2), for example. Good to see The Greene’s wine bar’s events show up on this list, which comes to Uncorked via the humble-yet-heroic efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it and shares it with us. Enjoy!
