Wine festival returns after 4-year hiatus
MORROW — Valley Vineyards in Warren County is bringing back a retooled wine festival this spring.
The Valley Vineyards Wine Festival: A Taste of Warren County will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. The event will celebrate 41 years of winemaking at Valley Vineyards, and will feature offerings from food producers and restaurants such as Wildflower Cafe of Mason and The Jam and Jelly Lady of Lebanon. The festival also will include the winery’s annual “Walk-Run Through the Vineyards,” which this year will benefit a Hamilton Twp. “Shop With A Cop” program, according to the winery’s web site. Live music, a wine-education tent, cellar tours and hot-air balloon rides also will be offered.
Joe Schuchter, whose family owns and operates Valley Vineyards, said family members decided to revive the wine festival after talking with representatives of the Warren County Convention and Visitors bureau. The wine-and-food event will spotlight what Warren County has to offer and how the winery’s wines are grown and produced, Schuchter said.
Valley Vineyards canceled its annual festival in 2007 after the full-weekend event drew about 80,000 people, many of whom camped overnight on the winery’s grounds. At the time, Schuchter said his family was taking the action in part to “clean it up and rework it.” A decade earlier, in 1998, two women were hospitalized after a festival attendee drove over their tents as they slept.
Schuchter said the redesigned festival will have a “stepped-up, though low-key, security presence,” and the winery’s employees and event volunteers will enforce “a strict policy of not serving to those who are intoxicated, or very close to it.”
This year’s event will be a single-day affair, with no camping or overnight parking. Spring Hill Suites Cincinnati Northeast will be offering a free shuttle to and from the festival.
Valley Vineyards traces its roots to 1969, when founder Ken Schuchter planted 20 acres of grapevines on the site. Today, three generations of the Schuchter family are involved in operating the winery and vineyards. For more information about the festival, check out the Valley Vineyards web site event listings or call the winery at (513) 899-2485.

Weekend wine tastings include Children’s Medical Center fundraiser
Yet another sterling list of wine tastings and events brought to you by the accommodating folks in Dayton and Southwest Ohio’s wine shops, grocery store wine departments, restaurants and wine distributors, and you’re reading about them here courtesy of the irrepressible Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles these listings.
Among the highlights: Saturday’s tasting at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Lyons Road store in Washington Twp. benefits Children’s Medical Center, and the Thursday night “Manager’s Favorite” tasting at the same venue looks like fun. Can’t go wrong with roses — as in the pink-wine kind — at Rue Dumaine on Tuesday night. And Wednesday brings the 3rd Annual “Big-Ass Beer and Cab Tasting” at Bruning’s Wine Shop in Beavercreek. The beers alone bring a whole new meaning to OMG. It’s all here, and it’s all good …

Support Fleurs et Vin charities by donating wine for auction
Got too much wine? Here’s one thing you can do with it …
The folks at Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store are accepting wine donations for the Fleurs et Vin wine auction. The Dayton area’s premier wine-and-food festival will be held on May 22 at Carillon Park. The festival benefits two local charity organizations: AIDS Resource Center Ohio and Culture Works.
Arrow — one of the founding sponsors of the festival and its predecessor event, Fleurs de Fete — is accepting donations from private wine cellars that will be sold via silent and live auctions during the festival, with proceeds doing to the two non-profits. For more information, contact Mif Frank or Dennis Batty at Arrow Wine Far Hills by calling (937) 298-1456.

‘Spring Soiree in the Vineyard’ to fight kidney disease to be held at Vinoklet Winery
I thought I’d share this news release about an event at a Cincinnati winery this Saturday:
DAYTON-CINCINNATI CHAPTER TO HOST INAUGURAL SPRING SOIREE IN THE VINEYARD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR GENETIC KIDNEY DISEASE
The Dayton-Cincinnati Chapter of the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation will host the Inaugural Spring Soiree in the Vineyard, a fundraiser to benefit the PKD Foundation’s research program. This wine tasting event will be held at Vinoklet Winery in Cincinnati Ohio on Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 4-6 p.m. in the tasting room overlooking the vineyard. Guests will be able to taste a variety of award-winning wines produced by this vineyard and purchase bottles to take home. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased at: http://www.pkdcure.org/DaytonCincinnatiChapter.
PKD causes cysts to grow on the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure. It is the most common life-threatening genetic disease in the world, affecting 600,000 American children and adults. Patients with the disease have a 50 percent chance of passing it on to each of their children. There is no cure for PKD. Despite several decades of intense basic and clinical research, an effective treatment that alters the course of ADPKD has not been established. Dialysis and transplantation are the only current treatments.
The PKD Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting programs of research, education, support, advocacy and awareness in order to discover treatments and a cure for polycystic kidney disease and to improve the lives of all it affects. For more information about PKD and the PKD Foundation, visit www.pkdcure.org or call 800-PKD-CURE (800-753-2873).Tweet

Dayton-based vodka trumps the best-selling brands in taste test
Before we get to the story that is scheduled to run in the Dayton Daily News on Sunday, April 3, let’s talk about how this newly released Buckeye Vodka tastes. I’ll be the first to acknowledge that I’m a wine guy, not a spirits guy. But a side-by-side taste test of Dayton’s own Buckeye Vodka next to three well-known international brands is illuminating, even to a wine palate.
If you’re looking for an assertive vodka that announces its presence brashly and leaves a burn in whatever it’s mixed with, Buckeye Vodka is NOT for you. Stick with Absolut ($19.25 for a 750 ml bottle), which matches that flavor profile and which came across as the harshest of four vodkas in this taste test.
Buckeye Vodka ($19.25) is a clean, smooth, very neutral vodka, similar in style to Ketel One ($23). Even Grey Goose ($32-$34) enthusiasts might do themselves a favor — and save themselves some money — by trying their favorite side-by-side with Buckeye Vodka. The results may surprise you. The folks at Dayton-based Crystal Spirits have crafted themselves a winner in Buckeye Vodka, and Miami Valley spirits enthusiasts should not hesitate to try a bottle.
By Mark Fisher Dayton Daily News
DAYTON — The Dayton-based Buckeye Vodka that will start hitting liquor-store shelves in the Miami Valley and across Ohio this week is surfing the wave of a national trend of micro-distilleries producing relatively small batches of premium spirits for thirsty enthusiasts.
The new 80-proof vodka is the brainchild of a family-based team that includes Jim Finke, president of The Finke Company in Moraine and co-owner and CEO of Crystal Spirits LLC, the maker of Buckeye Vodka and his brother-in-law Tom Rambasek of Kettering, who owns and operates Crystal Water Company on South Patterson Boulevard in Dayton and who also serves as president of Crystal Spirits. Finke’s brother Chris is chairman of the company.
Finke said he and his brother were looking to launch a business as a family. Throughout the recession and economic crisis of 2008-09, as NCR left Dayton and General Motors closed a truck-assembly plant in Moraine, “We saw our friends and families and their businesses take hits,” Finke said.
But they also noticed Ohioans consuming liquor in record amounts, even as many spent less on each bottle they purchased. Finke — a vodka drinker himself — and his family members came up with an idea.
“We figured that if we could make an ultra-premium vodka at a reasonable price, people would not have to sacrifice quality,” Finke said. Drawing on the expertise of a friend who made vodka in Austin, Texas, and taking full advantage of the supply of high-quality water and equipment of Crystal Water, they started producing test batches of what would become Buckeye Vodka, which will make its debut in 175 outlets across the state sometime this week. The retail price for a standard-sized (750 ml) bottle will be under $20 — $19.25 in Montgomery County, Finke said.
Finke predicted that micro-distillers such as Crystal Spirits will change the spirits landscape just as craft-beer “micro-brewers” did for the beer industry — and there’s already evidence his prediction is accurate. Buckeye Vodka is part of a rapidly growing trend of entrepreneurs across the country starting their own micro-distilleries to produce relatively small batches of whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, specialty liqueurs and other spirits.
The number of craft distillers has risen from 69 in 2003 to 264 today, according to American Distilling Institute President Bill Owens. The institute, founded in 2003 to promote the craft-distillery movement, has grown quickly to more than 200 members.
In Ohio, there are now 11 licensed distilleries, only two of which existed prior to 2006, according to Matt Mullins, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control.
One of those relatively new distilleries is located in Tipp City. Buckeye Distillery — no connection to Dayton-based Crystal Spirits or Buckeye Vodka — began production in July 2010 on West Plum Street. Owner Aaron Lee of Casstown is producing a 50-proof (25 percent alcohol) Buckeye Distillery Cherry Liqueur that is available at multiple spirits outlets in the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus areas. A raspberry liqueur is on the way in the coming months, Lee said. The cherry liqueur sells for $19.95.
The Dayton-based Buckeye Vodka is available only in Ohio now, “but we’d certainly like to take the brand elsewhere,” Finke said. “We’ve had inquiries from all over. We’ve got room to grow.”
Dayton-area vodka drinkers appear poised to embrace their new homegrown product: Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store has received pre-orders from three customers who each want one case of Buckeye Vodka upon release, and the Kettering retailer will be receiving an initial shipment of 15 to 20 cases this week, according to Arrow co-owner Mif Frank.
“There has been considerable interest in it, because of the local connection,” Frank said. “We anticipate we’ll be selling a lot of it.”

Celebrate baseball’s return with glass in hand
Celebrate the Reds’ dramatic Opening Day victory AND the Queen City’s strong German heritage at Bruning’s Wine Shop in Beavercreek tomorrow, April 2, where it appears as if the shop is reprising the excellent tasting of German and Austrian wines that it hosted on Wednesday night. The wines are delicious. If you want to taste the closest thing to a quintessential German wine — with a touch of sweetness backed by by bracing, refreshing acidity — try the ‘09 Leitz Dragonstone. It’s electric. Or find other favorites in this list of wine tastings and events, which comes to Uncorked via the quietly heroic efforts of a Dayton-based wine listserv. Play ball!
And apologies for the garbles in the list this week — we are seeking to resolve some “technical issues” (why can’t all computers, computer systems and software get along?)
