First lady Michelle Obama is leading a campaign called &amp;#8220;Let&amp;#8217;s Move&amp;#8221; aimed at fighting childhood obesity, a problem she says concerns her both as first lady and as a mom.

One in three American children are overweight or obese, and public health experts say today&amp;#8217;s kids are on track to have shorter lifespans than their parents.

In an interview about the issue, the first lady said she became interested in the topic when a pediatrician addressed her daughters&amp;#8217; weight, telling Obama that her daughters&amp;#8217; weight and body mass index were getting &amp;#8216;off balance.&amp;#8217;

Some have criticized the first lady for using her daughters as an example.

They say addressing any weight issues in a girl publicly can be damaging to the girl. Obama, meanwhile, said she is a mother, concerned about her own children&amp;#8217;s health and the health of all children.

Are you ever out and find you just have to go? Right now. Or does your son or daughter (or grandmother) have to go? Right now.

There is a website that can locate public restrooms anywhere in the nation.

If you&amp;#8217;re a planner, you might put the address in your web-connected phone and be prepared for an emergency.

The address is Tena.US/women. (It works for men, too.)

You&amp;#8217;ll be happy if you need it. Not sure the stores will as some of them are bookstores and other businesses which don&amp;#8217;t likely think of themselves as public restrooms.

You know who&amp;#8217;s going to be great fun? This Scott Brown fellow.

He&amp;#8217;s already embarrassed his daughters nationally in his acceptance speech after winning a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts.

The Associated Press (and now every other media outlet) reported that Brown was thanking followers when he said this about his grown, gorgeous daughters: &amp;#8220;Just in case anybody is watching throughout the country, yes, they&amp;#8217;re both available,&amp;#8221; he said.

&amp;#8220;No no, only kidding, only kidding,&amp;#8221; he said. And then he corrected himself: Arianna, a premed student, was not available. But Ayla, he repeated, was.

&amp;#8220;My jaw dropped,&amp;#8221; said Ayla on Wednesday. &amp;#8220;I was like, that definitely wasn&amp;#8217;t in the script!&amp;#8221; (Her jaw did drop. Go on YouTube and watch it.)

Sure Brown&amp;#8217;s the guy who could scuttle the federal health care bill, and yeah, that&amp;#8217;s kinda interesting and important but he&amp;#8217;s now the bumbling reason for a national discussion on daddies who embarrass daughters.

But it&amp;#8217;s not even his most entertaining action. In 1982, he posed NUDE, nude I tell you! In Cosmopolitan magazine after being named &amp;#8220;America&amp;#8217;s Sexiest Man.&amp;#8221; A U.S. Senator has posed nude!

Let&amp;#8217;s get back to the current discussion: What do you think of his comments? Is he just a regular dad, not a stuff politician? Or is he an insensitive politician not thinking about his daughters?

We all know the divorce rate continues to increase, but did you know the rate of getting married in the first place has declined?

More couples in committed relationships are choosing to live together, but not seek marriage.

What do you think about that? Is the institution of marriage dying?

I promise to never write about Michelle Obama&amp;#8217;s hair ever again.

Let&amp;#8217;s review: Last year, she pinned her hair up at a July event and the world went mad about her chic, new bob.

It was merely pinned up and therefore was neither chic nor a bob.

So imagine my disbelief when it was reported recently that Mrs. Obama really did get her hair cut into a bob. Haven&amp;#8217;t we heard this already? In fact, haven&amp;#8217;t we as a nation been disappointed by the fact that she did not change her hairstyle.

This time, the first lady confirms it so it is truth, not bobby pins. Much to her credit, she LIKE THE REST OF US considers it not newsworthy.

So I&amp;#8217;m going to believe her. It&amp;#8217;s not newsworthy now. And in my world it never will be again.

Last year, a sub-industry of journalism cropped up which basically covered Mrs. Obama&amp;#8217;s appearance. The Washington Post, a fairly serious publication, even assigned a reporter to cover nothing but the first lady&amp;#8217;s looks.

Maybe that was appropriate in her first year. Afterall, this was history and this woman is intriguing.

But it&amp;#8217;s time we find her interesting for more than her hair, clothing and arms.

First of all, who even knew there was a happening called Marriage Week?

But indeed the week of Feb. 8-14 is designated as Marriage Week USA 2010, and a local group will offer opportunities to help couples make Marriage Week every week of the year.

The idea of Marriage Week was started in the United Kingdom in 1997 as a way to stabilize and celebrate unions. It came to the United States in 2002 with the same purpose.

In Dayton, it will kick off with a pre-Marriage Week one-day conference on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Marriage Week Conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the David Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College.

The conference will be run by the staff at Marriage Works! Ohio, a local marriage advocacy group, based in Dayton.

The fee for the conference is $25 per couple and includes three workshops and one activity, two boxed lunches and Date Your Mate coupons.

The Date Your Mate idea is to get married couples to go out on the town during Marriage Week to rekindle love and fun.

The conference workshops include:

Your Finances, Today and Tomorrow
Parenting: Raising Generation Z
Sex and Intimacy in Marriage
For Better or Worse: Dealing with the Unexpected
Blended Families

The activity options are:

Learn the Art of Massage
Salsa Dance Lessons

It is time for the government to conduct the U.S. Census. Here is what you need to know to participate in the count and also what to do to avoid being scammed by those pretending to be employees of the government.

In March, everyone will get a census form in the mail with 10 questions.
It&amp;#8217;s this simple: If you fill out the form and mail it back to the U.S. Census Bureau, a Census taker will not come to your home, the bureau says.

If you don&amp;#8217;t fill it out, you will get a visit.

It is the law that you have to repond to the Census. It&amp;#8217;s not an option

There is more information available at http://2010.census.gov/2010census/index.php.
In fact, at that site you will see the 10 questions included in the 2010 Census.

The questions focus mostly on numbers of people in your home, their ages and their race. They do not focus on your finances or other personal information.

You cannot, however, fill the form out online. The Census Bureau says it is exploring that option for the future.

Your protection
Census time is also the time unscrupulous people may try to get into your house and into your private information under the guise of being Census takers.

The Census Bureau and the Better Business Bureau say, a legitimate Census employee will:
• Have an ID badge with name, expiration date of the badge and a watermark for authentication. Ask the person to show you this information.

In fact, if you wish, you can verify the credentials of a Census worker who shows up at your house, you can call 1-800-331-7363. If you get a phone call, and you want verification, call 1-800-392-6975.

A legitimate Census worker will not:

• Ask for a donation

• Ask for Social Security or banking numbers.

• Contact you via email.

In a year where motherhood and family have taken a hit from examples like the Octomom and Jon and Kate Plus Eight, and most lately Charlie Sheen and his domestic bliss, here&amp;#8217;s a family story to end the year right.

Tracy Hermanstorfer of Denver went into cardiac arrest during delivery of her son, Coltyn on Christmas Eve. She stopped breathing, was slipping away and Coltyn showed little signs of life.

The Associated Press reports that medical professionals worked on the baby and he started to move and cry. More amazingly Tracy had inexplicably started breathing again.

&amp;#8220;My legs went out from underneath me,&amp;#8221; Mike Hermanstorfer said Tuesday, Dec. 29. &amp;#8220;I had everything in the world taken from me, and in an hour and a half I had everything given to me.&amp;#8221;

Tracy and the baby have no lingering health problems.

&amp;#8220;We did a thorough evaluation and can&amp;#8217;t find anything that explains why this happened,&amp;#8221;said Dr. Stephanie Martin, a maternal fetal medicine specialist at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, where the Hermanstorfers had gone for the birth of their son.

Like many of us who believe in miracle, Mike Hermanstorfer has an idea.

He credits &amp;#8220;the hand of God.&amp;#8221;

Some of you in relationships have not bought your Christmas present for your significant other yet, have you?
It can be hard. If you&amp;#8217;re in a new relationship, you don&amp;#8217;t want to &amp;#8216;over-shop&amp;#8217; and risk making your boyfriend or girlfriend think you&amp;#8217;re coming on too strong.

If you&amp;#8217;re a longtime couple, you surely don&amp;#8217;t want to buy an underwhelming gift.

Meezoog.com is an online dating site, featuring Dating Diva Samantha Karlin, Meezoog&amp;#8217;s resident dating expert and coach.

Here are 10 tips to make relationship shopping easier, according to Karlin.

Clothing looks way different on a person than on a hanger. Take a friend of similar size and make them model.

Expensive isn&amp;#8217;t always the way to go. Thoughtful is.

Here&amp;#8217;s a cost-saving tip. If you find something you want, write down the model or style number and see if it&amp;#8217;s online for a lower price.

You don&amp;#8217;t have to buy one big gift. A few little ones packaged nicely is cool

Ask family and friends for advice.

Think about engraving or customizing. (I mean at least it will show you know his or her name!)

Look for presents at unique places, like boutiques and markets.

Use your skills. Poets! Write a poem. Musicians! Compose a song.

Investigate the person&amp;#8217;s home for themes. They like certain colors. They like certain knick-knacks. Follow that.

Wrap the gift nicely. Even the nicest piece of jewelry isn&amp;#8217;t going to look nice in a plastic bag.

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
Serena Williams was named as 2009&amp;#8217;s Female Athlete of the Year by members of The Associated Press.

Her athletic accomplishments in 2009 are hard to beat. Williams finished the year at No. 1 in the WTA rankings. She topped $6.5 million in prize money, breaking the single-season tour record by more than $1 million. She won three significant singles titles - Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the season-ending tour championships - and paired with sister Venus to win three Grand Slam doubles championships.

But you might be wondering about honoring a person who in September had a meltdown and issued a tirade at a line judge in her U.S. Open semifinal loss?

I did at first, but really, who cares? Athletes are passionate, driven and can be emotional. I give her the benefit of the doubt.

But then she issues this less-than-gracious comment upon winning her award on Tuesday.

&amp;#8220;People realize that I&amp;#8217;m a great player, and one moment doesn&amp;#8217;t define a person&amp;#8217;s career,&amp;#8221; said Williams, 28. &amp;#8220;And I was right, for the most part: It wasn&amp;#8217;t right the way I reacted - I never said it was - but I was right about the call.&amp;#8221;

She also noted that the outburst, which resulted in a record fine and two-year probationary period at Grand Slam tournaments, &amp;#8220;got a lot more people excited about tennis.&amp;#8221;

No one got excited about tennis because she argued with a judge. People got excited about it in the same way they stare at a car wreck. It&amp;#8217;s the spectacle of it.

And really, on a day you&amp;#8217;re honored you&amp;#8217;re still going to find a way to criticize the judge. Move on. You&amp;#8217;re the athlete of the year. Talk about how blessed you are.

Or is it equality that women athletes are finally as obnoxious and lack self-awareness as much as the male athletes do?

Leighton is the gorgeous redhead from the old and new &amp;#8216;Melrose Place.&amp;#8217; At age 41, she still looks fresh enough to be carded, but she also has the ultimate reality check of a teen-age daughter who laughed, pointed and asked the clerk if he knew just how old her old mom is.

She said she shushed her child and said somethng along the lines of, &amp;#8220;Let the man do his job.&amp;#8221;

You know you love it too when someone checks your ID. Just ignore that note that says they check ID for just about anyone who looks under 50. I think Laura Leighton&amp;#8217;s kid put that sign up.

A Dayton woman is a finalist for a national contest to find the &amp;#8216;most recession-weary living room in the country.&amp;#8217;

Valerie Holler says her living room is such a mess she no longer allows visitors in the house, so she hopes to win CSN Stores and celebrity TV designer Angelo Surmelis&amp;#8217; contest to get a $5,000 living room makeover with furniture and design help.

The winner will be announced Jan. 8.

In her application, Holler says, &amp;#8220;The couch and love seat we have are hand-me-downs from a prior boss of mine. We use seat savers under the cushions for added support, however, our cat (or Pure Evil as I call him) has found he can squeeze through the corner behind the seat cushion and literally sleep inside the sofa.&amp;#8221;

Still, she has some sentimental attachment to the furniture, as she states here.
&amp;#8220;I must say, while I constantly think of one day having a nice living room, my memories stay vivid of my daughter and son-in-law wrestling on the love seat while he tried to take a nap, just about every time they stopped by the house. My son-in-law was in the Army and we lost him due to an explosion in Mosul, with their son being born just one week prior to his death. I&amp;#8217;ll always remember them both curled up on that loveseat! I would love to be able to make my living room livable once again, and maybe&amp;#8230;just maybe Ill be ready to start REALLY living again as well.

This year I&amp;#8217;ve decided to really minimize my Christmas shopping list. I&amp;#8217;m purchasing for family and a few of my friends&amp;#8217; children.

I&amp;#8217;ve asked my friends if we could skip Christmas and stick with getting birthday presents for each other. Frankly, they all were relieved, except for one who insisted we continue.

I think I&amp;#8217;ve cut the amount of money I will spend in half.

I&amp;#8217;ve also done things like this: Kohl&amp;#8217;s gave me $20 in &amp;#8216;Kohl&amp;#8217;s cash&amp;#8217; after I spent $100 in (actual) cash. Usually, I would just use that on myself. Instead, I wait the few days I have until the Kohl&amp;#8217;s cash is active and head back to that very store and buy something for someone else that I most likely picked out during the original trip. It&amp;#8217;s work, but I saved $20, didn&amp;#8217;t I?

Others are doing this as well. Did you know there is a &amp;#8216;re-gifting&amp;#8217; movement across the country, trying to show people that it is not tacky to give someone else a gift someone purchased for you but that just doesn&amp;#8217;t work?

What are you doing? Do you have some tips for others?

A purse auction featuring glittery evening bags and quilted totes is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville.

About 200 purses will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Proceeds will benefit Premier HeartWorks and will be used to educate women about the prevention of heart disease - the leading cause of death among women, said Natalie Driscoll, event organizer.

The event is sponsored by the Future Region&amp;#8217;s Leaders, a career development group of young professionals working at Miami Valley Hospital.

Handbags will be displayed in the lobby of the hospital starting at 5:30 p.m. The live auction will get underway at 6 p.m. with guest auctioneer Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly. Kim Farris of Lite 99.9 will serve as mistress of ceremony.

Purses in the auction were donated by hospital employees, physicians and several shops in the Centerville area including Joli Boutique, Pieces of Style, Miss Kelle&amp;#8217;s Boutique, and The Zig Zag Gallery. A vintage handbag from the Clothes That Work Boutique will also be auctioned.
Items purchased can be paid for by cash or check.

&amp;#8220;This is going to a fun evening as we raise money for a good cause,&amp;#8221; Driscoll said. &amp;#8220;We expect bidding on several purses to be lively.&amp;#8221;

There is no cost to attend the event. Refreshments will be provided to attendees by Tim Hortons.
