Wright State loses 17-point second-half lead, drops road game to Green Bay 57-56
Final: UWGB wins 57-56. Green Bay’s Keifer Sykes made both free throws with 3 seconds left and Julius Mays missed a 3-point shot from halfcourt as time expired as Wright State, which once led by 17 points with 13:03 left, lost a second straight game. Green Bay outscored Wright State 28-10 in the final 13:03.
The Raiders led 46-29 with 13:03 left before Green Bay used a 20-3 scoring advantage to tie the game 49-49 with 4:22 left. WSU pushed back ahead 53-50 as Green Bay continued to get to the free throw line, and Kam Cerroni gave the Phoenix their first lead since 5-4 on two free throws with 49.4 seconds left to make it 54-53.
Sykes made 1-of-2 free throws with 33 seconds left to push the advantage to 55-53. After a WSU timeout, Julius Mays dribbled left and put in a high bank layup while being fouled with 12.8 seconds left. He made the free throw to give WSU a 56-55 lead. Then Sykes hit the free throws.
3:58 second: Tied 49-49. Wright State led by 17 points before Green Bay went on a 20-3 scoring run, capped by a Keifer Sykes layup with 4:22 left. The Raiders have scored three points in the last 9:05, on an Armond Battle 3-pointer. Sykes, the freshman point guard, leads all scorers with 12 points, and sophomore Alex Brown has 7 points, 7 rebounds and 10 blocks for Green Bay. Reggie Arceneaux leads WSU with 11 points.
7:53 second: WSU leads 49-38. Green Bay’s last four baskets have been 3-pointers, but Armond Battle answered with his own 3-pointer with 8:09 left to set the current margin. WSU is shooting 7-12 from 3-point range, including 2-3 from Julius Mays, who has 10 points. Reggie Arceneaux leads the team with 11 points on 5-10 shooting.
11:15 second: WSU leads 46-35. The Raiders pushed to their biggest lead of the game at 17 points (46-29) with 13:03 left on a Reggie Arceneaux jumper (he has a team high 11 points), but Green Bay’s Kam Cerroni answered with two 3-pointers, part of nine straight Green Bay points scored by him, to cut the deficit to 11. Just like that, Cerroni leads Green Bay with 9 points. WSU is shooting 53.8 percent this half and 43.5 percent in the game. Green Bay’s 7-1 Alec Brown is relatively quiet (3 points, 4 rebounds), but he has 6 blocks.
15:31 second: WSU leads 36-26. Alec Brown just recorded his sixth block of the game for Green Bay, but the Phoenix turned it over on the other end. Julius Mays has four points this half to reach 10 in the game after scoring 3 on Thursday, and he is in double figures for the 11th time in 20 games this season. He briefly went to the locker room after apparently aggravating an Achilles tendon injury, but he’s now back to the bench.
Halftime: WSU leads 30-22. The Raiders started 9-16 from the field but finished the half on a 4-17 stretch. WSU called a timeout with 58.6 seconds left after an Alec Brown basket for Green Bay cut the advantage to 28-22, and the Raiders got an important basket from A.J. Pacher on the next possession to set the halftime margin. Green Bay made 9-of-12 free throws, and WSU has not attempted one.
3:14 first: WSU leads 28-15. The Raiders scored 22 points in the first 7:55 but have scored just six since then. But Green Bay has helped WSU with turnovers and poor shooting, and the Raiders have eight offensive rebounds. Reggie Arceneaux leads WSU with 7 points, while Brennan Cougill, who scored Green Bay’s first five points, still leads the Phoenix with 5. Green Bay is shooting 22.2 percent and has 10 turnovers.
7:50 first: WSU leads 24-12. The Raiders’ momentum has slowed, but they once led by 16 points. They are now shooting 10-12, and Julius Mays has a team-high 6 points while playing with an Achilles tendon injury to his left ankle. Green Bay point guard Keifer Sykes scored on a smooth spin move, and Josh Humphrey scored on a rebound and put-back to set the current margin. Green Bay is shooting 28.6 percent.
11:27 first: WSU leads 22-8. The Raiders shot 25 percent on Thursday, including 2-of-16 from 3-point range, but they have started today 4-of-6 for a hot start. Julius Mays has a team-high 6 points on two 3s, and 7 different Wright State played have scored. Green Bay has 8 turnovers and is shooting 2-7.
15:49 first: WSU leads 11-5. Brennan Cougill has all 5 Green Bay points, but Wright State has pulled to an early lead with the help of turnovers on the last five Green Bay possessions. Julius Mays connected on a 3-pointer to match his scoring total from Thursday’s Milwaukee game, and WSU is shooting 5-9.
20:00 first: Wright State starters: Reggie Arceneaux, Julius Mays, Vance Hall, Cole Darling, Johann Mpondo.
PREGAME: The Raiders looked timid offensively in a 58-38 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday night, which they hope to shake off on a short turnaround against Green Bay in the Horizon League Game of the Week (airing in the Dayton area on Time Warner Cable Channel 99. Green Bay has lost four straight, all Horizon League games, but by margins of 4, 3, 1 and 7 points.

The most pathetic game I’ve ever seen. Coach Donlon should return his salary based on that performance. Why is Arcenaux in the game, with the ball with a minute left, after 6 turnovers all game? Why is Sledge the foul machine in the game on the last possession? Pathetic team, pathetic program.

What are you on E? Why would we take out our starting point guard and one of our bet ball-handlers in the most critical part of the game? Sledge has been a terrific defender all year long, is this the first game you watched? Yes we should have easily won the game, but we didn’t and that just yet again highlights our inexperience, but you can’t be so short-sighted as to blame it on two freshman and pick out two possessions of the the entire game. They should not have even been put in that situation but none of the upperclassmen have risen up and taken over the role of Leader. If we had a true Leader on this team we wouldn’t have given up the big lead and the freshman point guard (and easily one of our best players) would not have been in that spot. Your basketball ignorance is astounding E.

I’m so sick of fans talking about Reggie and May’s being called stupide and Lazy, when Ohio’s best (Vest & Soph’s) sitting on the bench doing nothing. Not stepping up, no defense, no offensive, no 3’s from the guys who played last year. Bedford Raider, your boy will be judged hard next yr. BD has hyped up Hall, Vest, Cole he better not say anything neg about them. This game was lost due to lack of coaching experience. It is what it is…

E— Unlike you, I’ve watched WSU all season; I’ve been to all the home games and watched the away gameson TV or on the computer. I also watch Duke, but only on TV, never in person. While WSU doesn’t compare to Duke in any way, shape, or form; they certainly are not pathetic. They are young, inexperienced, hard playing, and missing an adequate post player, but they are entertaining for the most part. Why bother to watch a “pathetic team?” Just keep watching the Flyers. I don’t know why Donlon does what he does, but I do know he knows more about the sport than either of us do.

Billy didn’t lose this game. Neither did Reggie. Green Bay shot 35 free throws. Raiders shot 6. There’s your culprit.

From what I can tell, it doesn’t matter who you sub (exception Reggie, Mayes) you get the same results, little or no effort on d or O most of the time. Wish somebody, anybody would step up..
