Wright State women’s basketball guard scores 38 points in overtime victory

The only problem with being in Green Bay, Wis., on Saturday was missing a big scoring performance happening back at the Nutter Center.

In the Wright State women’s basketball team’s 75-72 overtime win against Milwaukee, freshman point guard Kim Demmings scored 38 points, the fourth-best total in program history. The team’s leading scorer eclipsed 20 points for the fourth time.

Demmings’ statistical day looked like this: 38 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 14-of-26 shooting, 5-of-10 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 free throws in 37 minutes.

The victory kept Wright State in second place in the Horizon League at 5-1 (12-6 overall). The Raiders rebounded from a 68-50 loss to No. 14-ranked Wisconsin-Green Bay on Thursday to beat a Milwaukee team that is winless in the league (4-11, 0-5).

They needed every point from Demmings to make it happen. She connected on a 3-pointer at the regulation buzzer to send the game into overtime tied 67-67. She fouled out with 2:59 left in overtime after scoring two points in the extra period.

Demmings’ scoring total was the best by a WSU women’s player since Tiffany Webb reached 49 points on Jan. 16, 2003, against Butler, which stands as the program’s single-game record. The previous best for a Horizon League team this season was 31 points, done twice by Detroit’s Shareta Brown and UIC’s Shamiea Green.

After Demmings’ Saturday performance, here’s a look at her rankings in the Horizon League: 4th in points (16.6), 4th in assists (3.8), 9th in assist/turnover ratio (0.8), 11th in free throw percentage (74.4), 14th in 3-pointers made per game (1.3).

In Horizon League games, Demmings is averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

Demmings is, without question, one of the best players in the league. People are missing something by not going out to see this fine young team that Bradbury has put together. Only 200 people or so to see the 12th ranked team in the country???
