KETTERING — City officials said they are encouraged by recent developments that a second multinational company, proposing to bring 187 new jobs to Miami Valley Research Park, is expected to make a decision on its plans next week.
Bruce Pearson, the park’s president and CEO, said according to a company representative, about 90 percent of the jobs would be hired locally.
City Manager Mark Schwieterman said the company’s name is being kept confidential until plans are finalized. It is being referred to as Project Vital.
The new jobs involve accounting/finance, information services, legal staff, support staff and technology development, according to a city grant application. Pearson said many of the jobs might fit the skill sets of former NCR, Lexis-Nexis and MeadWestvaco employees.
The development comes on the heels of news earlier this month that another unidentified multinational company, known as Project NACEC, has proposed a $20 million project that would reportedly bring 115 new jobs to Kettering.
That company — a manufacturing, research and development operation — has locations in Ohio and Michigan and employs 3,000 worldwide. Kettering officials said they are working with the company to seek economic development money and grants.
As for Project Vital, Montgomery County commissioners have already approved a $250,000 Economic Development/Government Equity grant for the project. The total cost is estimated at $2 million.
The project is also dependent on receiving a $1.18 million state job creation tax credit, according to its grant application. The Ohio Tax Credit Authority is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss the tax credit.
Project Vital would renovate a building at 3139 Research Blvd. to establish a 35,000-square-foot technical resource center to support the company’s offices in the United States, Europe and Asia, according to the city’s grant application. The company wants to sign a 10-year lease and open operations by Sept. 1.
The site was previously home to Deloitte Consulting, which is in the process of moving to new headquarters in downtown Dayton.
The new company is expected to have an annual payroll of $9.1 million, according to the grant form, which would mean an average salary of $49,000 for the 187 jobs. The city anticipates about $103,000 in annual income tax revenue in the first five years of the lease and $206,000 annually in the next five years.
