WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — The Air Force Materiel Command’s plan to hire more than 5,000 people across its 10 bases through the end of September 2011 goes well beyond filling jobs that retirements leave vacant.
Filling jobs vacated due to attrition will account for about 8.5 percent of the planned hires, with the rest categorized as hiring for new Air Force positions, AFMC spokeswoman JoAnne Rumple said Monday, July 6.
The hiring benefits Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, one of the AFMC bases. The Aeronautical Systems Center, which manages aircraft acquisition and support programs from Wright-Patterson; the AFMC headquarters, and Air Force Research Laboratory collectively stand to add hundreds of jobs between now and Sept. 30, 2011, if budget funding continues as Air Force officials hope.
One of the key hiring efforts is in acquisition programs, where Defense Secretary Robert Gates wants to expand the government’s work force in a bid to improve control of defense spending programs afflicted with cost overruns and lengthy delays.
The Air Force said it wants researchers from a variety of specialties including chemistry, biology, electrical and aeronautical engineering, physics, computer science and behavioral sciences. Also sought are contract specialists, acquisition program managers, financial managers, cost estimators, test and evaluation engineers, aerospace medicine and personnel staff.
Salaries vary, depending on whether the new hires are right out of college or have prior workforce experience. Intern hires could start at between $30,600 and $46,400, while new program managers could begin at between $56,100 and $80,000, AFMC officials said.
The AFMC manages a $59 billion annual budget and 75,000 employees. It is responsible for research, development, acquisition, maintenance and upgrades of aircraft and weapons systems.
