WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE — Maj. Gen. Janet C. Wolfenbarger, of the Air Force Materiel Command headquarters staff, has been nominated by President Obama to be promoted to AFMC vice commander and the rank of lieutenant general.
Her nomination is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Wolfenbarger entered the Air Force in 1980. She is currently director of the AFMC’s Intelligence and Requirements Directorate, the headquarters staff officer who oversees the acquisition arm of the command. The AFMC headquarters is on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
As vice commander, Wolfenbarger would be responsible for providing acquisition management and logistics support for various Air Force aircraft and weapon systems. The command conducts research, development, testing and evaluation of warfighting technology.
Wolfenbarger would succeed Lt. Gen. Terry L. Gabreski, currently the highest-ranking woman in the Air Force. Gabreski is to retire Nov. 20, after 35 years of Air Force service.
Wolfenbarger is a 1976 graduate of Beavercreek High School. She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1980 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering sciences. She also holds a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a master’s degree in national resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, at Ft. Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C.
Wolfenbarger’s previous assignments include special assistant for command transformation to the commander and director of the Intelligence and Requirements Directorate; positions in the F-22 System Program Office at Wright-Patterson AFB; F-22 lead program element monitor at the Pentagon, and B-2 System Program Director at the Aeronautical Systems Center.
Maj. Gen. Marshall K. Sabol, director of strategic plans, programs and analyses at AFMC headquarters, is to serve as interim AFMC vice commander between Gabreski’s retirement and Wolfenbarger’s confirmation.
