Lt. Gen. Janet C. Wolfenbarger, a 1976 graduate of Beavercreek High School, is in line to become the Air Force’s first female four-star general, which would bring her back to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base from the Pentagon.
President Obama has nominated Wolfenbarger, currently a three-star general, for the fourth star. If the Senate confirms her promotion, Wolfenbarger would succeed Gen. Donald J. Hoffman as commander of the Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson, Air Force spokeswoman Maj. Mary Danner-Jones said Monday.
Hoffman, who joined the Air Force in 1974, plans to retire later this year. The timing of the change will depend on what the Senate does and when, Danner-Jones said.
Wolfenbarger served from December 2009 until September 2011 as Hoffman’s vice commander of the Air Force Materiel Command. As vice commander, Wolfenbarger succeeded Lt. Gen. Terry Gabreski, now retired, who was then the Air Force’s highest-ranking woman.
Wolfenbarger is currently assigned to the Pentagon as military deputy in the office of assistant Air Force secretary for acquisition. She joined the Air Force in 1980.
The AFMC, an Air Force major command, oversees nine bases including Wright-Patterson, where the command has its headquarters. It employs about 83,000 people and manages $60 billion annually in research, development, test and evaluation programs and develops, procures and maintains Air Force aircraft and weapons programs.
