It’s nice to know that there are businesses that still take risks despite the recession.

It’s a calculated risk — extremely calculated — but this week, Faruki, Ireland & Cox announced it will open an office in downtown Cincinnati. The law firm, which started in 1989, has 30 attorneys now.

Charlie Faruki, managing partner, said the firm has been studying the opening of the Cincinnati office for a while.

“This is not a 2010 decision,” he said. “For many years, our firm has had both clients and cases in Cincinnati.

“We have been wanting to open an office there for some time. The reason we made the decision last year ... included the fact that we seem to have more work there then we have historically. We have been told by clients who are down there that they would use us even more if we had an office there.”

Partner Jeff Ireland added that he and other attorneys in the firm have tried cases in Hamilton County court for years.

“We have clients who have needs down there,” Ireland said. “In this age of law firms that are very competitive, we wanted to provide the very best professional services that you can. We want to be close to where the clients are.”

Faruki, Ireland & Cox handles a wide range of business litigation including work in class actions, securities, products liability, patent and other intellectual property cases, antitrust, privacy and information security. The firm also represents clients in breach of contract and competitive issues including trade secrets and advertising. The firm will place five attorneys in Cincinnati and are prepared to add more as needed. The Cincinnati office will be in the PNC Building, 201 E. Fifth St.

The decision to open the office during the recession positions the business for growth, Faruki and Ireland said.

In some ways, the firm has been able to use the recession to their advantage.

“One of the benefits of the bad economy is that it’s a good time to look for office space,” Ireland said.

Added Faruki, “We expect the economy to improve. We want to be well-positioned for when it does improve.
