By Dayton Daily News
The following is a selection from the Dayton Daily News archives, from April 22, 2001; some of the information is out of date.
A lot of old-fashioned detective work goes into assembling the annual Dayton 100 list, according to Joe Zehenny, the man in charge of putting the list together.
Zehenny, managing partner of the Dayton office of Arthur Andersen LLP, said he and his co-workers scan Dun & Bradstreet reports, read local periodicals, talk with local bankers and quiz clients for the names of local privately held companies that might qualify for the list.
Then, in mid-January, Arthur Andersen mails questionnaires to about 1,000 prospective Dayton 100 companies throughout the Miami Valley. About 200 return the questionnaires every year, Zehenny said.
The results are tabulated, and the top 100 companies by sales volume make the final cut, Zehenny said. Several "up-and-coming" companies are selected as well every year."This is the 15th year for the Dayton 100 and there are 15 new companies on the list, " Zehenny said.
Longtime readers of the annual list might notice some differences between this year's list and those of previous years.
First, the companies' phone and fax numbers have been deleted by Arthur Andersen. Several companies had requested that the numbers be deleted as a way to help cut down on unwanted solicitations.
Second, more than a third of the companies on the list did not provide "outlooks." These are concise predictions for business growth for the coming year, usually found on the bottom of each company profile. Zehenny said the downturn in the economy is responsible.
"In the past, most of the companies would say the economy is going to continue to expand and that they looked for good things to happen," Zehenny said. "But, this year, most expect business to be flat and they're being more cautious about what they say going forward."
The downturn started in the second half of last year and accelerated in the fourth quarter. Still, most companies in this year's Dayton 100 saw their sales grow last year.
"Sales were up about 9 percent in 2000 on a combined basis," Zehenny said. "The only industry that was down was construction. Everyone else had strong years."
Most companies hired additional employees last year as well. On average, employment grew 3 to 5 percent among the Dayton 100 companies, Zehenny said.
