DAYTON – The Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education will launch a new initiative in March to increase the number of internships available to local college students as a way to develop and retain a talented work force.
The “20 by 20 Challenge” initiative will kick off with an internship job fair from 3 to 6 p.m. on March 28 at Fifth Third Field.
Research conducted by SOCHE indicates that the greater Dayton region supports nearly 8,000 internships a year. The challenge’s goal is to increase the number of internships employers support to 20,000 by 2020.
To more than double the number of internships in southwest Ohio will take the combined, strategic and innovative efforts of many businesses and service providers, the private sector and regional colleges and universities, said Sean Creighton, executive director of SOCHE. The organization also is working with updayton, the Dayton Chamber of Commerce and Dayton Development Coalition.
“The positive impact that creating more internships can have on our region will be momentous,” Creighton said, adding that internships can help keep talent here by creating career opportunities for students.
“It really strengthens their connection to the region,” he said.
SOCHE hopes to achieve that goal through the multi-year effort in collaboration with career service departments at its 22 member colleges and universities.
Students seeking an internship for the summer or next year and businesses looking for interns can register to participate in the 20 by 20 Challenge Internship Fair. Visit www.20by20Challenge.com to register.
Participation is free for students and businesses and space is available for businesses on a first-come, first-served basis. One student will win a $1,000 scholarship for attending.
