Burch named president

American Trucking Associations Board of Directors elected Kevin Burch, president of Jet Express Inc. in Dayton as the federation's 72nd chairman.

“Kevin has been one of our association’s most vocal and passionate advocates,” ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said. “His enthusiasm for trucking and for improving its image is infectious and will serve him and ATA well as chairman.”

Burch replaces Pat Thomas, senior vice president for state government affairs at UPS Inc., as ATA chairman.

Burch has been president of Jet Express since 1990, and a commercial driver’s license holder since 2008. Under his leadership, Jet has received the esteemed Dayton Chamber of Commerce Corporate Partner Award, and the John H. Patterson Award.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Irish appointed to council

Cheryl Irish has been appointed to an advisory committee for the Council of Accreditation for Educator Preparation.

Irish is director of accreditation and assessment in the College of Education, Health and Society at Miami University. She will serve as a member of the council’s specialized professional associations advisory committee.

Based out of Washington, D.C., the advisory committee seeks to advance the mission of the council — to “advance excellent educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality.” It also “supports continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.”

Irish, who has been at Miami since 2013, played a key role in the streamlining of the college’s assessment process. She also teaches several courses in the department of educational psychology.

Dayton Freight appoints several

Dayton Freight Lines, Inc., a leading provider of regional less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation services, announces the following appointments:

Adam Paulus has been named Facility Manager for the Company, and will be based out of Corporate Headquarters. Paulus started with Dayton Freight in 2014 as an Operations Supervisor at the Walton Service Center. Prior to joining Dayton Freight, he worked in the construction industry in various roles. Paulus graduated from The University of Dayton in 2003.

Melissa Ahner has been named Region 4 Safety Specialist in the Safety Dept. Ahner has over 10 years of transportation experience with Gateway Transportation and Anheuser Busch. She is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.

Sean Hohenstein has been appointed Accounting Supervisor within the Corporate Accounting Dept. Hohenstein joined Dayton Freight in 2012 and has held the positions of Fuel Administrator and Financial Reporting Accountant. He graduated from Wright State University with degrees in Accounting and Finance.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2016, Dayton Freight Lines, Inc. is a private, union-free, LTL freight carrier headquartered in Dayton.

TECHNOLOGY

NuVasive names Stafslien vice president

NuVasive, a leading medical device company focused on transforming spine surgery with minimally disruptive, procedurally-integrated solutions, has announced Joan Stafslien is joining the company as executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. In this role, Ms. Stafslien will oversee the company's global legal function, reporting to NuVasive's chairman and chief executive officer, Gregory T. Lucier, and serving on the company's executive leadership team.

Stafslien brings to NuVasive more than 20 years of experience as a legal advisor to medical technology companies. She joins NuVasive from CareFusion, where she served as general counsel and corporate secretary from 2009 until its acquisition by Becton Dickinson in 2015.

Stafslien’s career includes law firm and corporate experience. She serves on the advisory board of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department of Northwestern University. She holds a law degree from University of Wisconsin Law School and a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University.

Woodruff joins firm

Falke and Dunphy has announced that Laura M. Woodruff has joined the firm. Woodruff received her B.A. from Earlham College in 2002 and her J.D. from the Mississippi College School of Law in 2006. She was admitted to the practice of law in Mississippi in 2006 and Ohio in 2008. She also earned an LLM in Health Law from Loyola University Chicago in 2015.

Recently, the Dayton Bar Association appointed Woodruff as the Chair of the Juvenile Law Committee for the 2016-2017 year.

Before joining Falke and Dunphy, Woodruff worked in private practice and for over four years at the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office. In both, she has extensive experience with juvenile court, criminal and appellate matters in the Juvenile, Domestic Relations and Common Pleas divisions of Montgomery, Greene, Warren, Preble, Miami and Darke County Courts. Additionally, she is experienced in helping clients with estate and probate matters, complex divorce and family law matters, as well as other civil matters such as evictions.
