Development fund applications available now

For businesses looking to expand, take heed: Montgomery County ED/GE applications for the county’s spring funding round are available starting today.

ED/GE — for Economic Development/Government Equity — funds are drawn from sales taxes in Montgomery County. Cities, townships and villages apply for the development dollars on behalf of businesses that want to move to their communities — or get bigger in those communities.

Projects such as Fuyao’s 2014 refurbishment of a former General Motors plant in Moraine and Spectrum Brands construction of a distribution and research center at Dayton International Airport last year were funded with ED/GE dollars.

The funds are awarded twice a year, in the spring and autumn, depending on availability of funds.

Erik Collins, county development director, said the applications are completed by municipalities working with businesses. Businesses need to partner with those communities in the application process, he said.

“The big thing is that … businesses, if they’re thinking about expanding, work with their local communities directly,” Collins said. “If they need to reach out to us, they certainly can.”

For this calendar year, $2.1 million in total is available for ED/GE projects. A committee of county and local officials will review applications and decide which ones to fund, which ones to cut and which to reject. Final funding decisions rest with the Montgomery County Commission.

“We may or may not fund all the projects,” Collins said. Money not awarded this funding round will carry over to the next round.

Completed applications are due back to the county April 3.
