Downtown has new coffee shop

DAYTON —The Ohio Coffee Co., 46 W. Fifth St., opened its doors on Oct. 1, said Rob Gray , who co-owns the shop with Rebecca Ledingham .

Gray said the shop offers baked goods, organic teas and coffee from multiple roasters. And because dozens of customers have asked him if he serves lunch, Gray said he plans to introduce a small menu of sandwiches, soups and cold pasta salads in a few weeks. The average price for the lunches will range between $5 and $6, he said.

While Gray and Ledingham’s store is new, buying a cup of java in the shop at the corner of Fifth and Ludlow streets may feel familiar to downtown consumers. Seattle East, Higher Grounds and Terra Cotta Cafe all previously were located in the shop.

Other coffee shops operating in the central business district include Kobricks Coffee Co., a block away in the lobby of 40 W. Fourth Centre and Boston Stoker at 34 W. Second St.

Ohio Coffee Co. is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Gray, who has been in the restaurant business for 18 years, also wants to secure a beer and wine license, extend the shop’s hours into the evening and provide a place for folk musicians to play and others to hang out.

“We really want to get downtown going again,” he said. “It has a lot to offer.”

Re: "...next month's closing party!"

Not nice - I hope they do well. I once knew a Becky Ledingham in this area. Good luck - maybe you could be the next Mona Best.

I really like the folks at Boston Stoker downtown, hopefully this place will be as friendly. Someone should open up a real doughnut shop downtown for us to pick up stuff for meetings etc.
