KETTERING — Kettering Medical Center said it has saved $3.7 million through a partnership with an infectious disease diagnostic company aimed at improving patient care and more rapid diagnoses.
The hospital said the savings have resulted from reductions in infection rates, decreased days that patients have had to be kept in isolation and fewer prescribed antibiotics.
The hospital was the first to partner with Huntsville, Ala.-based Diatherix Laboratories in using the technology, known as TEM-PCR.
Tests for infectious diseases such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C-diff) now take about six hours to perform. Using conventional technology, such tests normally take at least 48 hours, the hospital said.
