Foreclosure filings in greater Dayton fell 20.8 percent in the third quarter, even as the nation’s foreclosure activity continued to surge, according to a California firm that tracks real estate data.
Foreclosure activity in the four-county Dayton metropolitan statistical area also declined in September, but at a narrower percentage, according to RealtyTrac’s report, issued Thursday, Oct. 15. The Irvine, Calif.-based firm’s figures include default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions.
In the third quarter, filings were made against 1,931 properties in Montgomery, Greene, Miami and Preble counties, versus 2,440 properties during the same period last year, RealtyTrac said.
The number of Dayton-area properties seized by banks fell to 568, compared with 707 a year ago, a drop of nearly 20 percent.
In September, foreclosure filings were made on 688 properties, versus 695 properties a year ago, a 1 percent drop, RealtyTrac said. Bank repossessions during the same period reached 220 properties, compared with 278 properties a year ago, marking a 21 percent decline.
Nationally, foreclosure actions were filed against 937,840 properties in the third quarter, a 5-percent gain over the same period last year.
California, Florida, Arizona, Nevada, Illinois and Michigan accounted for 62 percent of the country’s third quarter foreclosure activity, RealtyTrac officials said. Ohio recorded foreclosure filings on 29,645 properties during the quarter, down 11.7 percent from filings on 33,575 properties a year ago, RealtyTrac said.
