Former WWE exec now heads Small Business Administration

A founder and former executive of World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. — a $1.72 billion corporate powerhouse — now leads the U.S Small Business Administration.

The Senate Tuesday voted 81-19 to confirm former WWE executive Linda McMahon to lead the Small Business Administration.

In that role, McMahon will lead an government agency that has more than 3,000 employees and a loan portfolio in fiscal year 2016 of $124 billion. The organization is meant to act as an advocate of and resource for small businesses nationally, and it had a budget of more than $10.8 million in fiscal 2016.

Media reports note that WWE grew from about a dozen employees to more than 800. It saw revenue in full year 2016 of $729.2 million, the company said.

McMahon stepped down as chief executive at WWE in 2009 to run for the Senate in Connecticut, losing races in 2010 and 2012.

Fox News reported that both of her Democratic Senate opponents — Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy — endorsed her nomination to lead the SBA.

The WWE — which is a publicly traded company (NYSE: WWE) — says that WWE Network subscribers watched 294 million hours of content (up 15 percent from 2015), placing it among “top cable and broadcast networks.”

Vince McMahon is McMahon’s husband since 1996 as well as co-founder and chairman of the WWE.
