EVENDALE — Ohio’s Third Frontier Commission on Tuesday recommended $5 million in support for General Electric Co.’s proposed Aviation Research Center at the company’s suburban Cincinnati jet engine manufacturing complex, provided that GE confirms that site as the center’s location.
GE officials are still evaluating where to establish the center, which the company would support with a $45 million commitment and a team of researchers and design engineers. The center would develop new technologies for next-generation gas turbines that could operate more efficiently and require less maintenance.
If GE commits to the Evendale location, the center would include three new laboratories that would be operated collaboratively with the University of Cincinnati’s Research Institute.
GE already has committed to similar collaboration with the University of Dayton at the company’s planned $51 million center in Dayton to develop next-generation electric power systems for aircraft, ships and cars in both military and civilian markets. The Dayton facility is to start operating by the end of 2012.
