Job outlook hits 15-year high

Half of Americans think now is a good time to find a good-paying job, according to a recent Gallup poll that found Americans’ optimism about the availability of good jobs is at a 15-year high.

The 50 percent of Americans surveyed last month who said now is good time to find a quality job was up 7 percentage points from December and 2 percentage points above the previous high recorded in January 2007, according to Gallup.

The survey results jibe with the U.S. Labor Department’s latest jobs report for January, which showed more Americans were either working or looking for work last month as the U.S. labor force increased by 584,000, and the labor force participation rate rose by 0.2 percentage point to 62.9 percent.

In addition, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 3 cents to $26.00, following a 6-cent increase in December, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reported U.S. employers added 227,000 jobs to nonfarm payrolls last month, while the unemployment rate edged up to 4.8 percent.
