MIAMI TWP. —A study by Miami Twp. Police Chief John “Chris” Krug has determined 82 permits are available for businesses wanting to sell liquor in Miami Twp..
The study adds 19 permits, spanning a range of uses from carry-outs to nightclubs, above the number available in 2008 when Krug last reviewed the question for Miami Twp. trustees.
Krug said Tom Gunlock of RG Properties, developer of the new Austin Landing development east of the new interchange, had been inquiring about permits.
Growth in the area’s population, to 29,131 residents, triggered the increase in permits available, officials said.
“If we are successful in recruiting additional hotels or additional restaurants to Miami Twp., we will not have to worry about having enough liquor permits to accommodate their needs,” Krug said in the report.
RG officials could not be reached to comment on plans to serve liquor at businesses in the new development.
Already voters will be deciding in the March 6 election whether to approve a local option for liquor sales sought by the Walmart at 8800 Kingsridge Drive, near Dayton Mall.
The store wants to extend hours it sells wine and mixed beverages, beginning at 10 a.m., rather than 11 a.m., according to Matt Mullins of the state’s Liquor Control Division.
Also the division is reviewing requests for permits by two businesses near the mall, the Doubletree Suites and Namaste restaurant, Mullins said.
“Overall we are in a pretty good position to accommodate the needs for most types of liquor permits which is important to our continued growth,” Krug said in the report.
