A joint venture between Butt Construction and a Chicago company has landed a contract to perform an estimated $98 million in renovations to the hospital at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, an executive said Thursday.

The project calls for Butt Construction of Beavercreek and Walsh Group of Chicago to gut and upgrade about 260,000 square feet of the hospital, said Bill Butt, president of Butt Construction.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the contract through its Louisville office, which oversees military construction projects in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.

The project includes such tasks as remodeling operating rooms, upgrading the food-service and kitchen areas and updating the heating, air conditioners and electrical systems, Butt said.

“It’s a major renovation,” he said.

Work should begin in a couple of weeks and last up to 34 months, he said.

According to a project description, the hospital includes about 786,000 square feet.

Butt/Walsh was selected from a field of five bidders, Bill Butt said.

A venture between Butt Construction with Archer Western Contractors, a part of Walsh Group, built a new complex for the Human Performance Wing located at the base. The $194.5 million project was the largest at the base since World War II.

Completed in March, the complex was delivered three months ahead of the deadline. It included not only construction, but also design services, he said.

Butt Construction employs 47, while Walsh has 5,000 employees.
