KETTERING — Kettering, Sycamore, Grandview and Southview medical centers received nearly $190,000 in incentive payments, part of $12 million awarded by Medicare to 225 hospitals nationwide for delivering high quality care in five clinical areas, according to the hospitals’ parent, Kettering Health Network.

The payments were part of a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services pay-for-performance project.

Local hospital results from the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration — which tracks process and outcome measures in acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, coronary artery bypass graft, pneumonia, and hip and knee replacement — were considered for the fourth quarter of 2006 through third quarter of 2007.

Grandview/Southview together won incentive payments for improvement in coronary artery bypass graft and pneumonia patient care, and received incentive payments for reaching the identified composite quality score in all five categories.

Sycamore Medical Center placed in the top 20 percent in heart attack treatment, pneumonia, and hip and knee replacement. Kettering Medical Center also placed in the top 20 percent for hip and knee.

Local hospital officials noted the staffing and technology needed to attain the added reimbursement costs much more than the reimbursement itself.

The project is run by Premier Inc., a national hospital quality and cost improvement alliance.
