DAYTON — The Dayton Development Coalition is urging community leaders to make a renewed effort to work together in supporting Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, to try to protect its personnel and programs in light of federal spending cuts and Air Force reorganizations.

“We must continue to speak with one voice as a community,” current and former coalition officials and academic and business leaders said in a co-signed open letter distributed this week.

They noted that Wright-Patterson could be hit by budget reductions, workforce cutbacks or loss of senior officers, depending on how proposed defense spending cuts are implemented.

Wright-Patterson, with about 27,000 military and civilian employees, is Ohio’s largest single-site employer. It is the hub of Air Force acquisition, logistics, and research and development operations and has an annual regional economic impact of $5 billion.

The coalition, which includes corporations and local governments in the Dayton region, considers support of Wright-Patterson and its programs to be a top priority for the region’s economic health.
