Restaurant exec from Kettering wins national award

Carl Howard, president and CEO of Italian restaurant chain Fazoli's and a native of Kettering, has been named the top restaurant executive in the nation on the 2014 Fast Casual "Top 100 Movers & Shakers" list.

The awards are compiled by the editors of the trade publication and web site FastCasual.com and other restaurant industry officials. Nominees for the award are evaluated on criteria such as innovation, revenue growth, use of technology and social media, branding and marketing, and overall contribution to the industry. Judges praised Howard for his contribution to the evolution and health of the fast-casual dining segment.

In FastCasual.com’s list of “top brands,” Fazoli’s came in third, behind Smashburger and second-place Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Fazoli’s operates restaurants in Springfield, Moraine, Miami Twp., Huber Heights, Sugarcreek Twp. and Troy, and is building a seventh area location on Miller Lane in Butler Twp.

Howard, a 1983 graduate of Fairmont East High School, has led a resurgence at Fazoli’s since taking over in 2008.

“I am very honored to be recognized, but the award really is a reflection of the great work done every day by the entire Fazoli’s team, from the home office to each restaurant,” Howard said in a Fazoli’s news release.

In 2013, Howard was named the “Executive of the Year” in the food and beverage category in the 11th Annual American Business Awards, and FastCasual.com recognized Fazoli’s as “Brand of the Year.”

In 2010, Lexington, Ky.-based Fazoli’s chose Dayton to test-market an enhanced-service concept in which glassware and silverware replaced plastic and paper, and servers delivered meals to guests’ tables. The concept went over so well during the test-marketing that it has been replicated at Fazoli’s locations nationwide. The chain also has expanded its menu and remodeled its restaurants.

Fazoli’s owns or franchises 220 restaurants nationwide. Sun Capital Partners acquired Fazoli’s in 2006.
