The project, which spans the river near the Dayton Art Institute and RiverScape, is designed to improve the way the water flows through the area, transforming a low dam — which had been a drowning hazard for many years — into a safe passage for recreational paddlers and a whitewater chute for kayakers.

The low dam was removed, being replaced with dual features: a smooth-water passageway for novice paddlers and the whitewater play feature for more experienced paddlers.
The idea is also to let people to fish and take advantage of the river downtown in new ways.
Work on the River Run project began in July 2015.
The redesign passed review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Miami Conservancy District.
Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley told us in 2015 that the project will encourage the momentum of new housing construction downtown. “It’s about making Dayton a place to live, learn, work and play.”
