State considers $250,000 grant for Dayton aerospace hub

DAYTON — Ohio is considering providing a $250,000 grant to help the Dayton region organize itself as a state-designated hub of aerospace innovation and technology.

The money would be intended to help regional partners, including local governments, universities and economic development entities, to do planning, hire an executive director and set up governance for the aerospace hub organization, said Kevin Carver, Dayton regional director for the Ohio Department of Development.

Carver said the strategy will be left up to the participating partners, including the University of Dayton, Wright State University, Dayton and Montgomery County, Dayton Development Coalition and the city’s development organization, CityWide Development Corp.

State officials are talking with the partner organizations about the Ohio grant, Carver said. There is no timetable for when Ohio will make it available, he said.

In September, Gov. Ted Strickland designated the Dayton area as a hub of aerospace innovation and technology, the first such designation in Ohio. Business and community leaders say the intent is to work with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base researchers to develop a focus in unmanned aircraft and related technology sought by the Air Force, with long-term goals of creating jobs in the region and attracting new business investment.

FOR GOD'S SAKE KEEP THE CITY OF DAYTON OFFICIALS OUT OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS!!! I like some of the comments others have said. This type of economic development should be handled by the Dayton Development Coalition and the DTMA. These two organizations should work together to make Dayton an Aerospace Hub. The schools should not be involved either. We don't need the schools or the government invovled to just screw things up! Just two stratigic organizations DDC & DTMA running this period.

I agree with John. This should be a DTMA / state of Ohio event. My employer has been involved with DTMA for many years and I am very impressed with what they have done for the region. Like John said... DTMA is THE VOICE for manufacturing in our area.

Yay, we are getting more of that borrowed Chinese money to spend in Dayton. Now we will start creating and saving real jobs with all this borrowed wealth. Thank God for the benevolent Chinese. I hope they continue to loan us deadbeats more cash. I hope we can continue to make the interest payments. You go Federal Gov. Show the nation how to borrow and spend like a crack whore with a stolen credit card. Soon the recession will end. It will soon mature into the greatest depression. You go King O.

This is an exciting development for the Dayton Region. One group that I noticed that is not involved is the Dayton Tooling and Manufacturing Association. DTMA has something like 400 members and they are THE VOICE of manufacturing in the Southern Ohio area. DTHA should be invited to be involved.
