DAYTON — Ohio is considering providing a $250,000 grant to help the Dayton region organize itself as a state-designated hub of aerospace innovation and technology.
The money would be intended to help regional partners, including local governments, universities and economic development entities, to do planning, hire an executive director and set up governance for the aerospace hub organization, said Kevin Carver, Dayton regional director for the Ohio Department of Development.
Carver said the strategy will be left up to the participating partners, including the University of Dayton, Wright State University, Dayton and Montgomery County, Dayton Development Coalition and the city’s development organization, CityWide Development Corp.
State officials are talking with the partner organizations about the Ohio grant, Carver said. There is no timetable for when Ohio will make it available, he said.
In September, Gov. Ted Strickland designated the Dayton area as a hub of aerospace innovation and technology, the first such designation in Ohio. Business and community leaders say the intent is to work with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base researchers to develop a focus in unmanned aircraft and related technology sought by the Air Force, with long-term goals of creating jobs in the region and attracting new business investment.
