Lisa Scott was able to realize her dream of opening a French apartment chic-inspired day spa and salon, thanks to the pilot Pop-Up Project, part of Activated Spaces’ initiative to fill downtown storefronts.
Beaute Box will officially open Friday with two other Pop-Up Project stores: Comfort and Joy, 521-523 E. Fifth St., and Peace on 5th, 519 E. Fifth St.
“The Pop-Up Project provides a low-risk, low-cost, flexible way to showcase local retailers’ goods while adding vibrancy to downtown,” said Shanon Potts, immediate past chairwoman of Generation Dayton, which leads the Activated Spaces effort with updayton, another young professional organization.
She added the long-term goal of the project is to convert temporary leases into traditional leases, while establishing downtown as a regional shopping destination.
The businesses selected for the pilot project will be open for one to three months.
The project supports entrepreneurs such as Scott as they test their business concepts while renewing downtown storefronts, according to Scott Murphy, chairman of updayton.
Scott launched Beaute Box at 116 E. Fifth St., providing nail care, waxing, eyelash extensions and makeup services. She had been operating a mobile day spa, and the Pop-Up Project helped her establish a bricks-and-mortar shop. Log on to www.wix.com/msceely/beautebox for more information or call (937) 903-3165.
Evelyn Gordon, co-owner of Comfort and Joy, said the business is a collaborative effort by Dayton artists and musicians, offering such distinctive handmade items as candles, books, poetry, baked goods, music CDs, and crocheted hats, scarves and mittens,

On Friday, Dec. 2, the three retailers will host open houses from 4 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with the updayton Scavenger Hunt during First Friday, the monthly downtown art hop.
