In most years I look forward to the Heisman Trophy ceremony for three reasons:
• To see which player just got jinxed for his bowl game.
• To see which player’s NFL career just nose-dived.
• To finally put an end to the hype that grinds on for weeks leading up to the ceremony.
This year I have a new reason: To see who voters around the country think actually deserves the award for college football’s best player.
My vote: Colt McCoy as a career achievement award. I know it’s an award based on single-season stats, but does anyone really stand out this season?
Alabama running back Mark Ingram appears to be the front runner with an eye-popping 1,399 yards and awe-inspiring 12 touchdowns. Yawn.
If you’re going to win the award as a sophomore — as only Florida’s Tim Tebow and Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford have — you had better show me something pretty darn spectacular.
Tebow — who was supposed to have the award named after him by now — has faded. Clemson’s C.J. Spiller is dynamic, but his numbers aren’t Heisman worthy. And a handful of quarterbacks putting up huge numbers haven’t separated themselves enough.
That’s why I’ll be rooting for McCoy, last year’s runner-up, to strike the pose Dec. 12 in New York.
