The Northeastern High School basketball team gave Anna a scare for 2½ quarters in their Division III sectional final game at the University of Dayton Arena on Friday, March 6.
But the Rockets did what great teams do — put the Jets away.
The Jets pulled to within five points in the third quarter, but Anna went on a 21-0 run in the second half en route to a 56-32 victory.
Northeastern finished its season 13-10. The Jets hadn't won a sectional game since 1991, and advanced to the sectional final for the first time since 1983 — a drought of 26 seasons.
Northeastern coach Kregg Creamer felt his team underachieved all season, but started to peak near tournament time.
"Late in the year when we won our last three games in a row, closing that out with a nice upset win over Southeastern, we were playing the way I thought we were capable of playing," Creamer said. "It's just didn't happen until game 18, 19, 20. The run was obviously a nice accomplishment, something that hasn't happened at Northeastern in a long, long time. It was not a surprise to those of us in that locker room."
The Jets dictated the pace of the game until the third quarter when Anna (21-2) went on its big run.
"We wanted to deliver the first punch, and I thought we did that," Creamer said. "We cut (the deficit) from nine to five, and then we had a few possessions in a row where we either turned it over or took bad shots, and being the great team that they are, they capitalized on every mistake during that run. They put us away like good teams do. I'm real proud of my kids' effort. Real proud."
The Jets graduate seven seniors, but have several underclassmen returning. Creamer is hoping they pick up where they left off.
"Hopefully, this momentum will carry over into the offseason and our young kids get hungry and want to get better," Creamer said.
